UPDATED 14TH DEC - QUICK POLISH UPDATE

Hi, commuters! We've kept an eye on player feedback and tinkered with a few bugs, so we're releasing another small patch tonight NZT. You'll find the following changes have been implemented.

  • Leaderboards will now show the top 5% of scores in increments of 1%. Instead of topping out at 5%, you'll now be able to find out if you're the absolute best of the best.
  • We've fixed a few bugs, most noteworthy among them that missing achievements on the Wellington map will be active again! These will be rewarded retroactively so no need to redo your scores.
  • A couple small visual bugs have been fixed as well.
  • Lastly, we've fixed an issue where right-clicking while dragging a roundabout could cause an exception.

Thanks for all your diligent emails to [email protected] - we've been able to hop on this stuff very quickly because of you. :)

Quick fix patch that sorts out some graphical bugs!

Hi everyone! We're releasing a quick patch that fixes some issues that cropped up in the Challenge City update.
  • If you have an older computer that uses OpenGL or you have been running the game in -force-glcore mode and experiencing a black or white screen error or the game’s display rendering upside down, this should be resolved.
  • Also, there was a bug preventing the colour trails on cars from displaying properly in gif capture. This is now also sorted!
  • Lastly, we've fixed an issue that was causing inconsistent scores on leaderboards due to a caching issue.

The response to this update has been so wonderful to see! We can't wait to share even more Mini Motorways with you in the new year. :)

Mini Motorways' Challenge City update adds fun twists on its urban highway planning

If you're a motorist in south west England, chances are you've probably encountered (or at least heard of) Swindon's Magic Roundabout. It's a monstrous concoction of five roundabouts smoshed together, and as far as I can see it serves no purpose other than to terrify bamboozled drivers up and down the country. I'm not kidding. In 2009 it was named the fourth scariest junction in Britain, after London's equally mega roundabout at Marble Arch, the M8 junctions in central Glasgow and Birmingham's Gravelly Hill, affectionately known as Spaghetti Junction.

It's the kind of nightmarish urban planning I try to avoid when building my own road networks in Mini Motorways, the excellent sequel to minimalist transport sim Mini Metro, but its new Challenge City update puts all four of these real-world asphalt atrocities to shame. In this new mode, each city gets a bunch of new rules and conditions you'll need to abide by, and after playing an early version of it this week, there's one challenge that's truly diabolical. Not only does it limit the number of road tiles at your disposal, but it does so in favour of, wait for it, unlimited roundabouts.

While Challenges, Surrounding Scores, and Friends leaderboards remain unchanged, we have removed the Global Top Ten display for our normal maps but they will still be available on the Daily and Weekly Challenge.
  • Improvements to controller support. If you play with a controller, you’ll be prompted to replay the tutorial if you’d like to see the changes.
  • New and improved colourblind options, including a colour picker that allows you to select preferred colours.

    • Issue where the game would sometimes render a black screen with loading icon.
    • A handful of car stalling bugs.
    • Improvements to various spawning issues such as boxed-in houses and notifications for disconnected buildings.

2021 has been a huge year for us, and we are so grateful to all of you for helping make it that way. We’ll be continuing to develop new maps, new features, and more updates for Mini Motorways all year long through 2022.

Update Notes for the Hometown Update

The Hometown Update included a minor bug which caused the Daily Challenge for the 30th of November to be impossible to play. We have fixed this challenge so it is now playable again.
