v1.61 Patch Notes

Hi folks!

We are releasing a small stability patch for DemonCrawl today. This should resolve an annoying crash related to bubble animations, but please let us know if you run into it again - making sure this one is fixed is currently our highest priority.

We will be working through the weekend to address any remaining issues with the Halloween update. A bigger content patch is planned for next week. :-)

  • Added "pathfinding" as a dictionary term
  • Added a toast with instructions on how to donate Candy when you gain one
  • Added special toast when using Blood Magic as Guardian

[h2]Balance Changes[/h2]

  • Reduced the chance for Maniac to appear before the final stage from 5% to 3%
  • Spookers can now drop candy when activated from any part of the screen

  • Fixed a bubble crash related to improper cleanup of the orb mutation list
  • Fixed an issue with Manaboard not detecting charged magic items properly
  • Fixed an issue related to activating Spookers on the first turn of a stage

  • Fixed Lucid Chest failing to solve cells
  • Fixed Cheap Imitation bypassing omen immunity

DemonCrawl's Halloween Expansion Is Now Available! v1.60 Patch Notes

Today's the day - DemonCrawl's second expansion, Halloween, is finally upon us!

It's COMPLETELY FREE and automatically packaged with the base game.

A ton of spooky new content awaits you, including the Maniac boss, 20+ time-limited rewards, new masteries, game-changing Special Chests and sooo much more.

To celebrate the launch, we are running a 33% discount on DemonCrawl for the next 7 days!

We will publish a couple follow-up posts very soon with more information about the seasonal Halloween Event (expected to run through Oct. 31st) as well as the standalone Halloween soundtrack, which you may purchase now at Bandcamp for $3.99, or receive a complementary copy by supporting us on Patreon!

  • Added Halloween flair
  • Collect Pumpkin artifacts and use them create a spooky new Beyond quest
  • Earn two limited-time divine items: Divine Jack-o-Lantern and Divine Bone Baton
  • DemonCrawl has been infested with Spookers, don't worry they're harmless
  • Complete the Halloween questline to earn 4 new avatars and a new inventory
  • Recurring mission: earn 1 Token every time you donate Candy to a stranger
  • 12 additional Halloween avatars are available in prizeboxes
  • New seasonal boss: Maniac - there's a madman on the loose, and he's going after the trick-or-treaters
  • New seasonal paint: Candycorn
  • New ultra-rare seasonal holograph: Autumn Leaves (only available in prizeboxes)

  • You can now find Special Chests throughout your quests - you must also find a mysterious Treasure Key to open them!
  • If your quest contains a special chest, you will come across a sign somewhere that indicates which stage holds the Treasure Key
  • Once you unlock a special chest, you can always find it in future runs by making it part of your loadout
  • Your selected special chest has a 10% chance to replace regular chests
  • There are 30 unique special chests to collect
  • Dark Chests have been removed
  • New keyword: Pathfinding - "Allows you to complete the stage with a percentage of cells still unsolved. Caps at 50%."
  • New mastery: Mutant - "Cultivate your Cankers, then sacrifice them at the right time for huge rewards!"
  • New mastery: Scout - "Pathfinder extraordinaire!"
  • New mastery: Detective - "Butter up some strangers to learn about monster locations!" (Based on an idea by community member Egg)

  • Hook Hand rework: "Your guaranteed chests will be special chests. Activate special chest effects twice."

[h2]Balance Changes[/h2]

  • Lumberjack I buff: "Begin the quest with a Sawblade. You can toggle Sawblade phasing." (Phasing will disable orb functionality.)
  • Lumberjack II buff: Broken Sawblade requirement reduced from 100 cells to 50 cells
  • Protagonist I buff: "All legendary items are favored. Gain a random legendary item when you enter the final stage."
  • Protagonist II rework: "Whenever you gain a legendary item, gain a mastery charge. Whenever you replace a legendary item, increase the number of legendary items you can hold."
  • Firefly I buff: "Burning cells do not hurt you. Each stage has a numbered burning cell, plus a burning cell for each stage mod."
  • Guardian II rework: "You are immune to life loss outside of monster damage."
  • Undertaker III buff: "Reveal all cells near sanctified cells and apply sanctified to any monsters in those cells."
  • Barbarian III buff: Charges reduced from 5 to 4
  • Lowered Demolitionist II unlock requirement from 400 cells to 300 cells
  • Lowered Demolitionist III unlock requirement from 1000 cells to 800 cells
  • Overhauled stranger drop tables
  • Increased the droprate of prizebox-only avatars
  • Slightly increased the droprate of divines in prizeboxes
  • Spawners now benefit from the Electric aura
  • Reduced the Token Shop prices of Trump Card and Archmage Sceptre by 100 tokens each
  • Chisel can upgrade chests into special chests
  • Slightly reduced the droprates of most sigil crafting materials
  • Dreamcatcher price increased from 5 to 10 coins
  • Priest buff: reduced the upper bound of his price from 50 to 40 coins

  • Fixed boss signs showing up in all Normal difficulty quests
  • Improved collision detection of orbs bouncing off walls
  • Fixed an issue related to entering windowed mode using the alt+enter command
  • Fixed an issue with Bubbler's Memento not preserving bubbles
  • Fixed a hardlock related to Fraudulent mod attempting to replace positive mods
  • Fixed an issue related to Beyond Ego not spawning under some conditions
  • Fixed Hydra Tail toast
  • Fixed Obelisks not advancing from cell reveal effects
  • Fixed "This Is Aurable" achievement unlocking on Steam but not in game
  • Fixed an issue between Paper Golem and Gold Digger
  • Fixed a few issues related to particle depth and cleanup routines
  • Fixed Guild Bond not activating on use of Mercenary
  • Fixed missing list icon on Mythic Emblem "guaranteed boss" text
  • Clarified wording on Punching Bag description for consistency
  • Cleaned up various project files, removed old assets
  • Removed remnants of Worldclay from the game (goodnight, sweet prince)


NOTE: Android release will be available by the end of the day, after any necessary hotfixes are implemented on the desktop version.

Hotfix #4 @ 6:40 PM EST:
  • Fixed special chests always unlocking in the same order instead of random
  • Maniac boss can no longer spawn in Casual Mode
  • Fixed Spookers spawning while "create a profile" screen is open
  • Fixed a crash related to Wrecking Ball and bosses
  • Fixed Quest for Sin toast
  • Fixed leftover progress from Christmas 2019 event interfering with Halloween questline

DemonCrawl Mythic Patron Spotlight: Fireplace & Elemental Fuel

Hi folks,

The wait is almost over - DemonCrawl's Halloween expansion finally launches TOMORROW!

We wanted to take a moment and spotlight two of the 40+ new items that will be included in tomorrow's update. These are no ordinary items... they were designed and developed in collaboration with DemonCrawl's first-ever Mythic Patron supporters!

Let's dive right in:

First up is a new legendary item called Fireplace, designed by Mythic Patron Emberflame.



With a fitting name like that, you might have already guessed Emberflame wanted to create a powerful option for the Firefly's legendary slot, and we were totally on board!

As it turns out, there's very little elemental support in the legendary item pool - it was clear right away that this idea was a winner.

Fireplace is an interesting concept because it's much more than a mere Burning enabler. It dips into both status effect and gleaning mechanics, offering great synergy with other items and even other masteries. Have you ever wanted to play as a BURNING SPY? Because now you can.

Next is a new magic item called Elemental Fuel, designed by Mythic Patron Tom25w.



Tom brought a few different ideas to the table and let us choose the one that appealed to us most. As soon as we saw Elemental Fuel (originally called Magic Fuel), our mind was made up.

It's such an elegant design. Some of our favorite items are those with unique effects that can be summed up in a single punchy sentence. "Spread all auras to nearby cells." 6 words, no room for confusion, and it fits perfectly into many different builds.

We think Tom's numbers were exactly right too - at just 13 coins and 90 mana per use, Elemental Fuel is something you can pick up without a great deal of buyer's remorse, even if auras never come into play during your run.

At its worst, Elemental Fuel is an affordable safety net. At its best? Probably something nuts involving Ethereal aura and infinite mana.

[h3]Other Shoutouts[/h3]

The Halloween expansion features more ideas from the community than any other DemonCrawl patch to date. Thank you all so much for helping us enrich our game!

We can't wait to see what you guys come up with when we finally add proper modding support...

In the meantime, we want to give a few quick shoutouts to some of the other ideas that made it into v1.60:

  • Detective mastery is based heavily on an idea from community member Egg.
  • There's a set of "Marshmallow" items inspired by ideas from raisins77. Yummm
  • Egg strikes again with an idea for a positive stage mod called "Astral" - rare loot everywhere!
  • Community moderator Team Worm gave us a great quality-of-life suggestion for adding Divine-colored borders around completed Mythic Emblems.


There's truly a lot more, but we don't want to give away too much before the expansion launches!

The Music of DemonCrawl: Halloween - Maniac Boss Theme

Hi folks,

We are very excited to give you a first look at some of the new music coming to DemonCrawl this Halloween!

"Nightmare on Respite's End" is an original track composed by Levi Tuoremaa. (He is the one responsible for several other memorable tunes in DemonCrawl, including the Desert Theme, Galaxy Theme, and even the fantastic title music!)

This track was written for an upcoming boss known as the Maniac. Watch out.

Many of you have asked for a way to download DemonCrawl music - now you finally can. Starting October 15th, you will be able to purchase the full Halloween Soundtrack in both FLAC and MP3 formats.
