Total War: Warhammer 3 Kislev - units, legendary lords and everything else we know

So, you want to know more about Kislev? With Total War: Warhammer 3 on the way, it's time to take a closer look at the confirmed Warhammer 3 races. What do we know about them so far? What can we guess from official reveals or other materials? And which details from their background in the Warhammer tabletop game might be relevant?

We have plenty of information on rugged Kislev - a grim, warlike nation, and an essential bulwark against the forces of Chaos for the civilisations of the Old World. Kislev got a mini army book for tabletop Warhammer's sixth edition way back in 2003 in which a threadbare unit roster was spelled out, with many mentions in Warhammer lore.

A Kislevite army also stars in the Warhammer 3 announcement trailer in which it was clear - as you'd expect by now from developer Creative Assembly - that their depiction in the game will align with or at least be inspired by all this background. Before we dig in, you can also check out our Total War: Warhammer 3 Cathay guide.

Everything is on fire in this new Total War: Warhammer 3 trailer

May 13, 2021 The new survival battle mode has been revealed, and you can read our thoughts here.

Creative Assembly has just dropped a new trailer for Total War: Warhammer III, and it's pretty intense. The new video for the highly anticipated strategy game uses in-engine footage to showcase Kislev's struggle against the forces of Chaos, specifically Khorne.

In the trailer you see a Kislev man give in to his rage, resentful that his nation is doomed to be the bulwark against Chaos for an ungrateful world. We think he might be Tzarina Katarin's dad Boris, although the voice actor is different from the narrator of the reveal trailer. Whoever he is, he returns with an army to try and conquer his own people. Tzarina Katarin takes him on, her forces battling Khornate Chaos mutations outside of a settlement. A Kislev woman wanders around looking worried. There's a lot of fire.

The trailer was actually leaked earlier today when it briefly appeared on Creative Assembly's Facebook channels. It was live long enough for several eagle-eyed community members to take video captures and screenshots. We weren't expecting more information on Warhammer III until tomorrow, when the gameplay reveal is due to take place. Perhaps the leak prompted the studio to go live with the trailer early, especially considering it's out in the wild now. This isn't the only Warhammer III leak to have cropped up recently, with details on a new battle type surfacing last week.

Total Warhammer 3's DLC might reflect Warhammer: The Old World updates

With Total War: Warhammer III set to expand the strategy game series into the Realm of Chaos, its Mortal Empires melting pot is due for another shake-up. That's thanks partially to the new factions arriving in the next game, but may also incorporate as-yet unreleased products from Warhammer publisher Games Workshop.

Games Workshop blew up its long-running Warhammer Fantasy Battles game in 2015 with a cataclysmic event that led to the Age of Sigmar - an almost completely new set of armies, models, settings, and rulesets. In 2019, however, the company announced that it was working on Warhammer: The Old World - a return to the original setting that Archaon had destroyed.

Total Warhammer III game director Ian Roxburgh tells us that Creative Assembly has an "extensive plan" for its Warhammer series that extends well beyond the launch of Total War: Warhammer III. That will of course involve the run of DLC add-ons and free updates that each of the games has enjoyed, and Roxburgh hints that there's "flexibility" to account for what's happening on the tabletop side. That could mean changes to factions that have been in the Total War fantasy series since day one.
