Total Warhammer 3 interview: "this is our first final boss"

With less than a month to go until release, Total War developer Creative Assembly has flung aside the curtain on Total War: Warhammer III - which you can pre-order here, coincidentally . That doesn't mean we know everything about the strategy game now, but we've glimpsed enough to understand how much more there is to see. The curtain stretches for miles.

I recently got to play 50 turns of the single-player campaign as both the Daemons of Chaos and Grand Cathay's Miao Ying. Mid-way through my session I'd thrown away most of my prepared questions and vibed my interview with game director Ian Roxburgh and principal writer Andy Hall, who had a lot of fun with the fact that I know enough about Warhammer to make certain assumptions which he, apparently, plans to upend.

You can read my hands-on impressions here and catch up on the headlines regarding Be'lakor, customisable Daemon Princes, the Great Maw, and eight-player co-op multiplayer at those links - like I said, big curtain - but first on the agenda is a new mechanic that's core to the campaign: rifts.

Total War: Warhammer 3 system requirements devour 120GB of your SSD

27/01/2022 Creative Assembly has provided performance expectations.

Total War: Warhammer 3's release date will soon be upon us, so it'd be wise to ensure your gaming PC is capable of meeting the game's system requirements. Creative Assembly's confirmed it's going all-in on story with its final Total War title set in the Warhammer universe, and it's safe to say we can expect some graphical improvements and optimisations too.

Creative Assembly told us that players who meet the minimum specs can expect to see 30fps in a typical 20vs20 battle scenario, at 720p using the Low preset. Moving up to recommended will see frame rates increase to 45fps, but at 1080p with the High preset. Regardless of how powerful your rig is, you'll need to clear a significant chunk of space on your SSD for all the legendary lords found in the game, 120GB to be exact.

There have been no official announcements in terms of new graphical features, but there's still every possibility we could see Nvidia DLSS or AMD FSR debut in the series. For now, it's probably best to prepare your rig for Creative Assembly's last Warhammer hurrah by equipping your system with the best gaming CPU and best SSD for gaming that you can.

The Great Maw is in Total War: Warhammer 3, for the "first time in Warhammer lore"

The Great Maw is the deity of the Ogres in Warhammer lore - a giant, gaping mouth in the ground that's understood to look a bit like the sarlacc pit from Star Wars. I say 'understood' because outside of things like Ogre symbols and cave paintings, it's never actually been depicted in Warhammer media before. That is, not until Total War: Warhammer III.

You will find the Great Maw in the Ogre Kingdoms on the Warhammer III campaign map, and as you can see in the image above, it's quite robustly detailed. "It's actually the first time the Great Maw has been depicted in Warhammer lore," as principal writer Andy Hall confirms for us in an interview. "So have a good look at it. There were lots of discussions."

A blurb that appears when hovering over the Maw confirms that "the Ogres' ever-hungry chief deity is in fact an enormous crater caused by a meteorite so huge it almost wiped their entire race from the face of the world."
