Total War: Warhammer 3's Kislev faction goes sledding with bears and guns

Why bother with pointless frippery like wheels when you've got a massive ornery bear population right on hand? That's the philosophy Total War: Warhammer III's Kislev faction takes to the strategy game's battlefields anyway, and you can see it in action in the latest unit reveal, which shows off the Kislevite War Sleds. They're big sleighs full of angry lads with guns, and they're each powered by two large armoured bears.

The sleds come in 'light' and 'heavy' variants, although we reckon it's probably a distinction that makes very little difference from the perspective of the infantry they're meant to trample. If a unit is somehow left standing after the sleds' initial charge, there's still a follow-on volley of gunfire to worry about.

The war sleds feature similar feathered structures to the Kislev winged lancers Creative Assembly revealed last week, and the heavy sleds are crafted from what look like timber beams clad in steel scales. The bears are yoked by high arch structures, which gives them room to move around and do bear things to any Chaos units in front of them.

Total War: Warhammer 3's Kislev winged lancers are ready to skewer daemons

There's nothing quite like a successful cavalry charge in Total War, is there? Especially in the Warhammer games, models go flying when you pull it off - sort of how they used to do in the original Rome: Total War. The latest units highlighted for the upcoming strategy game Total War: Warhammer III are Kislev's winged lancers, and they look like they're going to be a fearsome force, even on a battlefield covered in daemons.

The winged lancers are Kislevite shock cavalry: they're fast, even while wearing formidable armour, and the feathered 'wings' they wear on their backs emit an eerie howl as they charge across the battlefield. In Warhammer Fantasy rules, the sound has a particularly demoralising effect on Chaos soldiers, which will make the winged lancers especially effective against that faction.

As it happens, the tabletop game's winged lancers are loosely based on the historical Polish hussars that formed part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth cavalry in the 16th-18th centuries. These also wore 'wings' on the backs of their armour, and a theory has it that the clattering sound these created made their units sound larger (and more threatening) than they actually were.

How Total War: Warhammer 3 will "go out with a massive bang"

Only a year and a half went by between Total War: Warhammers 1 and 2, but it'll be roughly four years between 2 and 3 when the final release in the trilogy launches later this year.

The first game in the series broke new ground for developer Creative Assembly, and the second was another significant escalation, with the Total War studio offering its biggest map, most divergent faction design, and deepest storytelling yet, as well as its richest DLC support schedule. What, then, can we possibly expect from the trilogy's conclusion, a game four years in the making, with Total War: Three Kingdoms having arrived in the interim and made its own, no less ambitious, contributions to the series?

We spoke with game director Ian Roxburgh and senior designer Oscar Andersson about the scale of CA's ambition for the final game in the trilogy, and how its relationship with Warhammer publisher Games Workshop has evolved now that GW is working within this universe once again. Precedent, talk of doubling the map size, and our hands-on session with the epic new survival battles had already indicated that Warhammer III would be another leap in ambition. But the devs promise that much more is yet to come.
