Want Ind and Nippon in Total Warhammer 3? Games Workshop just gave you hope

"Hope", mind. Not certainty. Definitely not confirmation. But, with Games Workshop reviving the Warhammer Fantasy setting (upon which Total War: Warhammer is based) with a new tabletop game, and Grand Cathay getting a full army in Total War: Warhammer 3, fans have wondered for a while whether other overlooked nations would get similar treatment.

Asked on the Warhammer Instagram whether "you would do Ind or Nippon?", the response from the official account was: "we may well see more regions of the Old World in future, we'll just have to wait and see."

As the top-voted reply on the related Reddit thread says, this is Games Workshop keeping its options open rather than actually promising anything. With Warhammer: The Old World - Warhammer Fantasy's relaunch - still yet to release and clearly focusing on the titular continent that's always been the core of the game, it'll surely be years before we see anything new of more distant nations like Nippon or Ind. But until very recently, you could've said the same of Cathay, and Games Workshop didn't have to say anything in response to this query.

Total Warhammer 3's Grand Cathay is here to defend the world with cannons, giant golems, and dragons

Total War: Warhammer III may have been delayed until next year, but Creative Assembly has just blown the lid wide open on the strategy game's biggest coup: being the first place to see a fully fleshed-out version of the enigmatic Grand Cathay. Based on Games Workshop's designs, this reveal doubles as the most substantial canonical update to Warhammer Fantasy's roster since the Ogre Kingdoms arrived in 2005.

In the first in what we're assured will be a series of reveals covering this mighty Eastern Empire, we see Cathay's armies in all their might as they defend their realm from the forces of Chaos. Whereas the Kislev trailers all featured Khorne, the Cathayans fight against another of the Chaos gods - Tzeentch, the changer of ways.

Grand Cathay is described as the biggest and most technologically advanced nation in the world of Warhammer fantasy, and its main trait as a faction is 'harmony'. Units of different affinities - Yin or Yang - can get some serious power boosts if they work together. For example, ranged units and melee infantry get stronger if they're kept close.

Total War: Warhammer 3 reveals Grand Cathay's army, created for the game

The mysterious army of Grand Cathay have finally been revealed for Total War: Warhammer 3, wearing their Chinese influences plainly. Grand Cathay have existed in the world of Warhammer (Warlore? Lorehammer?) for almost 30 years but not fielded a full plastic army, so one had to be created for Creative Assembly's fantasy strategy game. Led by dragons in human form, they field forces including Jade Warriors, towering Terracotta Sentinels, and the Celestial Dragon Guard. Come meet 'em in the new trailer below.
