Crusader Kings III News

Crusader Kings 3 has already sold over a million copies since launch

Crusader Kings III has joined the 'one million copies sold' club, and it's only been a couple of months since it launched at the start of September. Paradox Interactive has just run a live stream of its Interim Q3 report on Twitch, and has just announced some big numbers for the medieval grand strategy game.

CEO Ebba Ljungerud and CFO Alexander Bricca have been going through the numbers and key points for Q3, and Crusader Kings III was front and centre. Ljungerud mentioned that the game has achieved a 91% score on Metacritic, as well as a 92% approval rating on Steam across 20,000 user reviews. Ljungerund also mentioned that everyone's favourite murder simulator passed the one million units milestone in early October, just over a month from launch.

For some context, it took Hearts of Iron IV until May 2018 - just under two years from launch - to reach the one million mark, and Stellaris hit 1.5 million in February 2018. Up until the launch of Crusader Kings III, Hearts of Iron IV was consistently Paradox's most-played grand strategy game.

Strategy gaming in 2020 - the good, the bad, and the remakes

Hello, I'm Joe and I'm your friendly neighbourhood strategy editor. One of the great things about being in charge of an entire genre's worth of content is that I get to reflect on the year in videogames through a very specific lens. Who cares about Cyberpunk or Hades - have you heard about what happened in strategy gaming this year?

It's a genre that's getting more mainstream as time passes, though it still has to struggle against perceptions of being niche, against passionate legacy communities who can't agree on what they want, and against various trends that arise within the industry which either aren't compatible with the genre, or distract developers as they try to capture some of the lucrative magic seen elsewhere.

But by and large, things are good and are only getting better for strategy gaming. While the global pandemic has affected our corner of gaming as well, there was still plenty to highlight this year and the highs of 2020 represent some of the best strategy games have to offer.

CK3 Dev Diary #47 - Happy Holidays!

The team says thanks for the support you've given us this year! Read more on the forums

Howdy all!

What a wild ride this entire year has been so far! We launched the game, brought the Ruler Designer to a new generation of CK fans, created a wholesome and welcoming community, and had a ton of fun.

While there is still a bit of time left in the year, we will be following in the footsteps of the long time-honored Paradox tradition of taking some time off around the holidays to give the teams a chance to recuperate and relax. This will also make sure that we are able to continue bringing you first class content in the new year! That being said, most of the team will be out spending time enjoying their holidays from this week until sometime early January 2021.

Without all of you in the Community, we would not be able to live our dreams of bringing Crusader Kings to life and share with you all. So, from the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for the wonderful memories during a truly trying year and may we see you all again in the new year.

There won’t be a Dev Diary until Mid-January at the very earliest, so keep an eye out for news on when they will return after the new year.

Happy Holidays to all!

That's all for now! Have a great winter!
