#2 Heavy Duty Challenge DevLog
Welcome back!
Today I want to introduce you to one of the core features of the Heavy Duty Challenge - precisely depicted truck interiors. We understand that for every simulation game one of the main objectives is to maintain immersion, in our case to keep players in a fantasy of acting as a driver of a sports truck, and this requires recreating every nitty-gritty detail we can get. Therefore, we’re putting a lot of emphasis on interiors as that’s what the driver sees most of the time. Of course, there is no correct way of playing, so if you prefer exterior view, you're more than welcome, as we also created a detailed trucks’ chassis. But let’s get back inside! What can you expect?
Let’s start with an assumption - while playing from the interior, I don’t want any artificial HUD displaying, I want a pure experience. That creates a challenge of giving the player feedback about the truck’s state. Fortunately, as we’re recreating a real life machine, car designers already solved this issue. They add a ton of different control lights and switches inside. So we took them and made good use of them, giving players a chance to get all necessary information with just a glimpse. It goes without saying that there are also speed and rpm meters, as well as an animated steering wheel. Driving using only these indications might be challenging at first, but we believe it gives the best immersion.
Lights go on and off indicating which truck’s systems are active.
Driving from the cabin view is cool, but it creates another difficulty. Unlike in other car driving games, what you see through a windshield is not enough in HDC. To precisely maneuver between obstacles, you need to see around the car. We have three methods that solve this for you to choose from. The first one is mirrors. They give you some additional information on what is behind you, just near the wheel and even directly in front of you. But they might be hard to read, so we introduce a set of fixed cameras near the front wheels and at the top of the cabin, basically simulating mirror views. That breaks immersion you say? True that, so here is the third method: if you drove a real truck, you could just look out the windows, right? So you can!
Being inside doesn’t mean you can’t look outside
As you can see, we’re taking interiors seriously and we think it helps us to give you the best off-road, truck driving experience. Stay tuned for next week's Team of the Month presentation and add Heavy Duty Challenge to your Wishlist if you haven’t already!
