"Don't give up on your dreams," says South American ALGS Championship winner Paradox

The first winners of the ALGS Championship were crowned this weekend as the APAC North, APAC South, and South American regions played their Championship Finals matches. This weekend was the culmination of over a year of Apex Legends Global Series esports, and with significant portions of the $2.5 million prize pool on the line, the biggest matches of many players' careers.

Fennel Korea and WolfPack Arctic took the wins in incredibly close-fought APAC North and APAC South regions respectively, taking home $177,319 each. In South America, the group stage's dominant team Paradox continued its hot streak to take home first place, despite being pushed to the last by an in-form Fênix I. Paradox takes home a smaller, but by no means negligible, $109,333 for its efforts.

"Our hard work and dedication have really paid off," Lucas 'artiNN1' Cafure, Paradox's in-game leader, tells The Loadout following the end of the Championship Finals. "But this is just the beginning of everything that's still to come." artiNN1 could not have conquered the South American region without his teammates Leandro 'N3LAS' Domingos Francisco and Hernandes 'Besk9' Mateus dos Santos.

How Loba is stealing the show at the ALGS Championship

Heading into the ALGS Championship, we expected the newest addition to Apex Legends, Valkyrie, to be the legend making the biggest splash. However, it quickly became apparent that a couple of players were intent on changing that narrative.

Most noticeably, Lev 'taskmast33r' Grigoriev selected Loba in the first round of the EMEA group stages, marking the translocating thief's first ever appearance in an ALGS tournament since her introduction in Season 5. And on her first appearance, Kraber in hand, Loba and the rest of Fire Beavers took the win.

Heads quickly turned, and talk of whether Loba was a good anti-meta pick to counter Crypto began to rumble. As Fire Beavers continued to perform well, the ALGS livestream focused on the team's gameplay and talk of Loba increased. On day two of the EMEA tournament, a second Loba appeared, under the guidance of Third Impact's Jake 'jaazzaz' Lock.

The pursuit of low ping: one player's 6,000-mile journey to the ALGS Championship

"It means a lot for the African orgs and the players to compete at this high level, and for this much money," says Matthew 'DaStwika' Ries. DaStwika plays Apex Legends for South African organisation ATK, and often has to remind people that the EMEA Super Region encompasses more than just Europe. "There are teams that are not based in Europe trying to compete for the ALGS Championship."

Teams from the Middle East and Africa (which make up the ME and A of EMEA respectively) don't often make the headlines, but solid performances from Fenerbahçe Esports and a much-improved showing on day two from ATK have turned some heads away from the European teams that so often dominate proceedings.

Despite being the highest-seeded African team in the ALGS Championship, ATK's road here hasn't been easy. DaStwika's internet connection at home in Durban has been poor since moving house in March this year, so his organisation was willing to fly him to Cape Town, which has much better internet infrastructure, for the big tournament. Flying to Turkey was also considered before coronavirus cases in the country rose. And then the UK opened its borders.

G2 returns to Apex Legends esports

G2 announces that it has returned to Apex Legends esports by signing the roster formerly known as AimAssist. The move comes over a year after G2 last fielded a team in competitive Apex Legends. G2 took an all-Finnish roster to the Apex Legends Preseason Invitational in 2019, achieving seventh place, but the famous organisation left Apex Legends esports just as the Apex Legends Global Series was starting to get into its stride in early 2020.

AimAssist is a popular orgless roster who recently competed for SolaFide, until the players quit in April this year due to not being paid. Despite this stress, Americans Tyler 'Dezignful' Gardner, Jordan 'Resultuh' Resulta, and Rigo 'Gentrifyinq' Padilla qualified for the ALGS Championship as the fourth seed, largely thanks to subsequent second-place finishes in the Autumn and Winter Circuit Playoffs.

Many rumours have surrounded G2's return to Apex Legends esports since the organisation pulled out of signing Nessy - but with a $690,550 prize pool on the line for the NA ALGS Championship alone (and that number is growing), it's no surprise that it has timed its return to Apex esports with the global tournament.
