Fortnite World Cup-winning organisation Cooler Esports shuts down

Esports organisation Cooler Esports has announced that it is ceasing operations and disbanding its Fortnite and Apex Legends teams. In an announcement post, Cooler says that it is shutting down due to "financial reasons" that were "accelerated by COVID-19".

Cooler was best known for its presence in Fortnite, and was the first organisation to have players win at the Fortnite World Cup in 2019. The pairing of Austrian player David 'Aqua' Wang and Norweigan Emil 'Nyhrox' Pedersen won the Duos side of the tournament, netting them $1.5 million each. While Nyhrox left the organisation shortly after that victory, Aqua has remained on Cooler's books until its disbandment today.

As well as making strides in Fortnite, Cooler looked to make a mark on Apex Legends esports too. It first picked up a roster in 2019, but signed its most recent trio as recently as October this year. The European squad of Oscar 'Yuki' Jiang, Matthew 'SirDel' Biggins, and Casper 'Gnaske' Præstensgaard will now become free agents.

Apex Legends players are facing a bug that resets all their progress

Many Apex Legends players are reporting issues related to losing their progress and having their accounts be functionally reset. Players log in to Respawn's battle royale game only to find their level set to one, and all their stats for previous seasons reset. Some players are also reporting that their Apex Legends ranks progress this season has been reset.

Players with hundreds of hours and thousands of kills have nothing to show for their dedication - no kill trackers, no badges, and no way of unlocking them again. According to Reddit user 'Triplehelix_', "after leveling up my season pass a few levels, you don't get the rewards a second time."

However, it seems that there could be two issues at hand, as some players still have all their cosmetics unlocked, whereas others have been left with nothing but their premium currency. Some players are even reporting that they have lost their coveted heirlooms due to the issue. Triplehelix_ says that an EA support agent informed them that "the issue is widespread but that he expects all info is safely backed up and once a fix is found it will be restored."

Apex Legends Global Series commissioner is "looking to support" future game modes with tournaments

Apex Legends fans immediately got excited when Chad Grenier, Apex Legends' game director, said that the Respawn development team was working on new game modes in an official blog post. In fact, his exact words were, "we'll launch new ways to play the game that take us beyond battle royale."

ALGS Commissioner John Nelson tells The Loadout that his team is looking to support Apex Legends with tournaments "across modes," courtesy of the team that brings fans the current battle royale tournaments, the Apex Legends Global Series.

"Apex Legends, at its core, was created to be a competitive game," Nelson tells The Loadout. "So across modes, my team is looking to support the game with tournaments. So, [I'm] really looking forward to being able to bring more styles of competitive tournaments to the game and to the community in the future."

Apex Legends Global Series Championship dates confirmed

Respawn and EA have announced the official dates for the ALGS Championship, Apex Legends' flagship tournament. The competition will boast a million-dollar prize pool, the biggest in the esport's history.

The ALGS Championship Last Chance Qualifier will take place from April 23 - April 25. The ALGS Championship will begin on June 1 and carry on through June 13. The two-week period will include group stages and finals for each of the five regions. That's two weeks of competitive Apex Legends to look forward to this summer, as well as an action-packed LCQ in April.

ALGS Commissioner John Nelson tells The Loadout that the Championship will be an online event like the rest of the series has been. Teams will continue to compete in their respective regions and will not face teams from across the world, in order to eliminate server and ping issues as much as possible. The regions will be the same that have been competing throughout the ALGS so far: North America, South America, EMEA, APAC North, and APAC South.
