Developer Interview and Behind the Scenes

Hello adventurer!

You´ve survived several days of Steam Game Festival and no doubt you´ve played all your favorite demos a few times over. We hope Ghost on the Shore is one of these games! And if not, we hope that after you´ve taken a look at our Behind the Scenes stream, you´ll be won over.

Our special treat for the last few days of the festival is an interview between the developers and Volker Ritzhaupt from Application Systems Heidelberg. We´ll be covering everything from the unusual origin story of the company, the stunning behind the scenes footage and story details you didn´t know about.

The stream will be live until the end of Steam Game Fest. After the event, the video will be available on our website.
Please take a look at our stream on our Steam page and join our Discord server.

What inspired a game about emotional ties that transcend death?

Ghost on the Shore´s core story came to our writer Dagmar in her sleep. In a somber dream, she had died and experienced her partner´s immense grief. Unable to reach out she could only be a witness to her partner eventually dealing with the loss and moving on. The dream left her feeling complicated emotions, that later became a seedling of the story.

Dagmar was selected for a writing retreat on The Isle of Eigg in Scotland. She spent a week discovering the shores, tales of the locals and the little library in her cabin. Much of the game´s locations and general feel is inspired by what she discovered that week.

There are also many historical themes in the game inspired by true events: young men being drafted into wars, the hardships of living on remote islands, the effects of rich employers arriving in rural areas.

The Isle of Eigg was too an island that had been bought by a family to turn into a working force, like the Rogue Islands in Ghost on the Shore. Some of the inhabitants even became inspirations for the game. For example, skipper Scruff is a crucial character in the game.

Our motto is to first create characters of flesh and blood, who in a way start having a life of their own. Through them, we get to tell our story, a story that hopefully leaves you feeling like you´ve really been somewhere.
