Tips For New Players

With new players getting in game we thought it would be helpful to post a list of tips and hints for your first session in Beatdown Brawler.

Chi is gained when positive things happen, such as damaging or killing opponents.
Blocking will reduce incoming damage, but it will also reduce damage the of your attacks if you keep it held during the attack.
You can learn which attack buttons to press next to keep a combination going by reading the tips on the bottom of the screen after you make an attack.
Heavy attacks will be opened through combination sequences or when you earn sufficient Chi.
Heavy attacks do additional damage, and are difficult to interrupt.
Directional movements while using a Heavy Attack, as well as if you are punching or kicking will alter the type of attack. For example, a downward facing heavy attack will generally be a leg attack or a foot sweep, where an upwards pointing attack will be a high or leaping attack.
Grappling attacks are available when your opponent is low on health and when you are close enough to grab them.
Grappling attacks cost three Chi to execute.
Grappling attacks will heal you by a small amount when successfully executed.
Special abilities require a full bar of Chi.
Each character has two special abilities. One is executed using the special + punch key and the other is the special + kick key. You can also override these with new bindings, for example on the keyboard these are bound to the 1 and 2 keys by default.
When in Beat mode you will lose Chi when you perform an attack off beat, and gain Chi when doing an On Beat attack.
You can track the beats in Beat mode in multiple ways including on the target indicator, in the pulsing bar at the top of the screen, or in a metered bar at the bottom.
You can press attack keys in beat mode even if you are mid-attack and they will help you to keep the rhythm.
Your hands will glow when you are in rhythm in beat mode, or when a heavy attack is available in other modes.
The targeting bars will display the keyboard or gamepad keys for special ablities, heavy attacks, or grappling attacks when they become available.
Increasing the difficulty level increases the health of enemies, increases the number of enemies spawned at a time in all modes. In addition to this it decreases the leeway you have to be on beat in Beat mode.

Heavy Attacks are directional. Meaning moving upwards while performing one will perform an upwards or jumping attack, and moving downwards while performing them will attempt a leg or crouching attack.
Some attacks only open up based on a combination being performed. It is possible to chain some combinations through complex series of loops.
Certain moves will not be available during rhythm mode. In general any move that would warp time or require multiple attacks is disabled if you are playing in the optional rhythm based mode.

Game Modes

Traditional - This is default game mode. Your objective is to survive waves of enemies and then defeat the boss. The level will end when the boss is defeated.
Survival - You will play on a single level with a never ending supply of enemies and periodic bosses. Spawns will come more quickly, and enemies will scale in difficulty over time. Your goal is to survive as long as possible.
Rhythm - In Rhythm mode your goal on each level is to survive until the song ends, while also defeating a quota of enemies and a boss who will spawn later during the song. Performing attacks, dodges, blocks, on beat will reward Chi and do full damage, while using actions off beat will reduce Chi and do partial damage. Hit lands are timed to occur on beat and heavy attacks are disabled.
