So, what has been improved and changed?!
We hope you have all been doing well since our last Demo play held during the Steam Next Fest last October. We would like to thank everyone who showed interest in our game and played it. Of course, weāre also very excited to share our game with any newcomers too.
Based on the valuable feedback we received from players who enjoyed our game, we have incorporated new features and made significant improvements over the past few months.
Before diving into the Final Beta Test, let's take a moment to explore the new features and improvements.
1. Tutorial
Setting sail on a new journey is never easy, especially when it's the first time. This is particularly true for missions in space, which can be even more challenging.
To help players learn the mechanics and rules of the game and streamline their experience, we have developed a tutorial to guide them through the gameplay of Dubium.
The tutorial will consist of a tutorial level and instructional videos to provide additional guidance.
- Tutorial level
The in-game tutorial is designed to resemble actual Frontier gameplay. The tutorial will take place in the Frontier Training Center, under the guidance of our smart (and somewhat sassy) Space Frontier Operator, Kerstin.
You will be learn the basic skills such as movement and gradually progress to a more advanced gameplay process. Upon completing the tutorial, you will have a better understanding of how to survive in the hostile environments of Space Frontiers face.
- Gameplay Guide Videos
There will be three videos to help you learn more about the game.
1. To become an Elite Frontier
Learn the advanced aspects of what an experienced Frontier can do.
2. How to Basic: The Traitor
Learn what the Traitor can do to increase the chances of completing a Traitor Mission.
3. Utilizing the Ping System and mini-map
Learn how to use the ping system and mini-map in Dubium to communicate and gather information to help you decide whom to trust or suspect.
2. Gadget Workshop
The Gadget Workshop is added to the game.
In Dubium, all characters are equipped with a unique gadget. Players can upgrade Characterās gadgets at the Gadget Workshop. Each gadget has different upgradeable abilities. Gadgets can be upgraded based on your playstyle. However, during the final beta upgrades will be partially available to be used.
Moreover, you can always reset your upgrades and try something new if you want to change things up a bit!
3. Additional effect added for Anyofus
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
The ever-aspiring Zackās gadget, Anyofus, is getting an additional ability.
-The original effect remains; characters affected by Anyofus lose communication among the Frontiers. So, offender alert or traitor exposure ceases to work.
- In addition, those who are affected by Anyofus can't use their gadgets for a short time and will cancel out gadgets in use.
Anyofus was designed to create a loophole for its users, allowing them to take down others without getting any penalty while staying under the radar of Space Frontier. However, it seemed to have zero impact, so we decided to add a new effect.
Moreover, it is always a challenge for us to balance abilities for gadgets. Since, all gadgets in Dubium need to have their uses for both Frontiers and Traitors. Be sure to try out the newly adjusted Zackās Gadget and tell us your experience!
4. Game Mechanics & Rule Adjustment
We have made some major changes to the game by modifying some of the basic rules of the game.
- Characters holding mission items are now only highlighted to the Traitor. In the last demo, any character carrying a mission item, such as a keycard, was visible with a green outline to everyone. However, everyone sharing this information made it difficult for Traitors to deceive others.
We hope this change creates more space for Traitors to be more daring and feel less daunted to try deceptive actions. With this adjustment we also expect more communication to take place (with or without the ping system) and gadgets to play a bigger role in the game.
- Blamaneās Call will be sent out to another player if the first one is rejected.Blamaneās Call is a feature that keeps the tension of a match going even after the initial Traitor is out of the game. When a Traitor dies, Blamaneās Call will be sent out randomly to remaining Frontier to become a Traitor. The receiver can either accept or reject it.
In the last demo, when the first Frontier rejected the proposal, it meant āNo More Traitorā. However, Blamaneās Call will now be sequentially sent to all players in random order until a player accepts, or all reject it.
Blamaneās Call will not occur during self-destruct sequences.
Escape pods no longer require the power to be restored in certain Energy Cube Collapse.Restoring power is mandatory to complete the Frontier/Traitor mission. However, when only one surviving player is left and the self-destruct sequence for insufficient survivors (less than two) is set off, having to restore power was more tedious than intense in many cases. Now you can simply head to an available escape pod and hack it without worrying about the power.
- Dubium Report can now be used in more cases. The Dubium Report system allows the player to select another player character they consider suspicious and explicitly add a āDUBIUM levelā label to that character info shown to everyone in the match. The menu to use it only popped up when you were knocked out by a stealth kill during the last demo. However, we made changes to it so that the players had access to it when they were knocked out, regardless of the method. (by an attack, an explosion, or a toxic gas etc.)
5. New Mini-game: Solar Panel Fuse Repair
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
There have been some voices asking for a new mini-game, and we added one where we thought a little more challenge might be needed.
Players will now have to repair fuses that got disconnected while repairing the Solar Panels out in space.
Players will have to head over to the cut fuse and reconnect them, to continue bringing the solar panels back up.
6. Death Report System
A Death Report System is added to provide an explanation on the cause of deaths and the reasons for failed revivals.
In Dubium all players start with one revival kit(not an item but an implemented system). However, depending on certain conditions, that revival chance may be lost.
We noticed that this caused a lot of confusion to players, so we wanted to make it easier to understand why they died and couldnāt revive.
To help that, players that die will now see a result screen on their screen. It will have information on why they died and couldnāt revive.
We hope the new system will reduce confusion and make it easier for the players to understand what happened.
7. Mission Scoreboard System
A Mission Scoreboard System is added to the game.
Upon completing one mini-game in the Energy Cube Destructor, a progression bar will appear on top of the screen. It will show two progress bars for specific info: āFrontier Mission Progressionā(left) and the āNumber of Keystonesā(right) that have been found on the map.
- āFrontier Mission Progressionā(Left side of the bar) shows how many Destructor mini-games have been completed.
- āNumber of Keystonesā(Right side of the bar) will show how many Keystones are found on the map..
Both Frontiers and Traitors can use this information to help them get an idea of the situation without having to go around the map as much as before and make it easier to decide what to do.
8. Weapon Spawn & Variation Update
Rusty Crowbar
Rusty Survival Axe
Pistol
Crowbar
Survival Axe
Pistol AmmoBoost
Fine Crowbar
Fine Survival Axe
PowerBoost Pistol
- More weapon spawn locations have been added.
Many players told us they had trouble finding weapons. We added more weapon spawn locations where Frontiers would typically go through while doing Frontier Missions, such as Chiefās Cabins.
- Weapon variations added.
Some weapons now come in different variations. For example, melee weapons will now have different damage values depending on their tier. Pistols have variations; some with more magazines and some with higher damage.
9. Throwable Items Control Rework
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
The controls for throwable items become more intuitive.
- After equipping a throwable item by selecting the slot for it, the cross-hair will switch to the design set for the throwable item.
- You can choose your mode of throwing by pressing the mode switch button(Default set to Right Mouse Button). You can choose the item to throw near or far by right-clicking.
- To throw the item, hold the Fire Button (Default set to Left Mouse Button) while aiming at the desired angle and direction and release the button to throw.
- You can switch to a different slot.
We hope this rework helps players to use the item as they intended.
10. New Item Spawn Location: Infirmary
Items needed for survival can now be found in the Infirmary in Uterlab-11.
Itās natural to look for a health kit when ālow on healthā and it makes a lot of sense to have some health kits in the Infirmary. We have also added some oxygen cans you can find inside the Infirmary too.
11. Localization: Simplified And Traditional Chinese
New languages are now supported in the game.
- Simplified Chinese
- Traditional Chinese
We are planning on adding more languages in the future.
12. Frontier Pass And Daily Missions
The Frontier Pass and Daily Missions are now added to the game.
The Frontier Pass contains numerous reward tiers, and players can receive rewards for reaching each tier. Players will need to earn a certain amount of points in order to upgrade.
Rewards consist of in-game currency, cosmetic items and etc. One of the main rewards is Gadget Dice, a special currency that can be used to upgrade gadgets in the Gadget Workshop.
There are two types of The Frontier Pass: the free and the premium. Players that unlock the premium pass will receive awards for both tracks. Players who didn't unlock the premium track can still receive rewards from the free pass.
Daily missions provide small goals the player can try to achieve while playing the game. Completing a daily mission will reward the player with many points to help them upgrade in the Frontier Pass.
During the Final Beta Test, players can receive enough currency to unlock the Frontier Premium Pass by completing the tutorials. So donāt forget to check them out!
"Frontier Pass" is a work-in-progress feature added to the test during the beta test. Enjoy DUBIUM while exploring the Frontier Pass. We would appreciate it if you share your experience during the Final Beta period and provide us with feedback.
Whoa, hope you like what we prepared :) We are as excited as you are to welcome you. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to leave them in the comments below or on Discord.
