Protection and Peril Update

It's Perilous on the High Seas!

Jump aboard Paper Pirates to explore the Protection and Peril Update, full of new features to spice up your voyages!
New Trait: The Reaper
Our first new trait for the Protection and Peril Update is The Reaper!

Whenever any other pirate goes overboard, The Reaper harvests a soul, collecting them for nefarious deeds. When The Reaper does not play in, they can spend the souls they've harvested to form one of several pacts, influencing the game in a powerful way.

Each voyage, the four pacts The Reaper can enact are chosen randomly, so it's never quite the same twice in a row! Will you use the power of The Reaper for good, or for evil?
New Trait: The Protector
Our second new trait for the Protection and Peril Update is The Protector!

During Day One, The Protector must choose any other pirate to protect. No matter how many votes the protected pirate receives during voting, they will not be thrown overboard. The pirate they choose to protect is a secret until the point at which they would have gone overboard, when the pirate will display a shield and become immune to further votes that round!

On days when they don't play in, The Protector may choose to change which pirate they're protecting. Who will The Protector choose to protect, and will they make sure they change their mind in time?
Empowering the Audience!
Alongside the new traits, we're giving the audience more power! We've added over ten new events, which will only appear when you have an audience watching your game. Each event allows the audience to influence the game in some important way!

When the audience is empowered, they can do things like choose a new captain, turn someone into a ghost, swap two pirate's teams, and much more. Who's watching your game? Do you trust them to help the humans, or are they sneaky ghosties?

You can customise how often an empowered audience event happens in your games, including turning them off completely, in the custom game menu under the Events tab.
Two New Events: Disarray & Equality
We're welcoming two new regular events to Paper Pirates - Disarray and Equality.

When the Disarray event happens, the crew become disoriented and confused, and an ongoing effect triggers which shuffles the order of voting randomly each day! This can really mess with the natural order of voting, so watch carefully who votes first!

When the Equality event happens, the crew commit to equality for all pirates. In terms of voting, this means that all pirates will have the same number of votes! This empowers the stowaway, and weakens the Captain, and can easily change up who votes for who.

Both Disarray and Equality last from when the event triggers until the next time a pirate is voted overboard.
Shop Enhancements
Sam Sherbot and Nat O'Bother have invested in some upgrades for their shops, and added some new features and functionality!

The Outfit Shop has been upgraded with the following new features:
 • Categories with newly added items now have a 'new' label, and individual items in categories will also tell you that they've recently been added to the shop.
 • More accurately customise the model in the shop, including options to try on different left and right hands and feet.
 • Create outfits in the Outfit Shop, and copy the Outfit Code directly from the shop ready for use in the in-game lobby! This also means you can create Outfit Codes using items you haven't bought yourself yet.
 • Once you've finished dressing up the pirate model in the Outfit Shop, there's a new option to buy all the items you don't own in one go. Customise a whole look, and buy it in one fell swoop for the ultimate convenient shopping experience!

The Ship Shop has been upgraded, and Nat O'Bother will now offer regular sales on their ship parts. The items on sale change once every week, so if you see something on sale that you can't quite afford, there's still time to save up and buy, buy, buy!
More Customisation Options!
Sam Sherbot has been sailing far and wide to bring you the latest pirate fashions! Become a wolf or an elephant, turn your pirate into an orc, and more with a new range of outfit shop items available for purchase!

Oktoberfest on the Ocean!
Grab a sausage and celebrate Oktoberfest!
As we see out September, we’re celebrating the ninth Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Oktoberfest on the Ocean! Running from 18th to 30th September, celebrate the end of the season with a shindig dedicated to pretzels, sausages, chicken dancing and more, with a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
Seasonal Trait: The Brewmaster
The Brewmaster is here, and they're ready to get the party started! When you have a Brewmaster aboard, they'll be asked to set the vibe of the ship during the first day. Whichever vibe they choose will mix up the Paper Pirates voting rules!

There are a total of four vibes The Brewmaster can pick for the ship:
 • Aggressive Vibes - Grants each pirate one additional voting power
 • Chaotic Vibes - Instead of voting from Stowaway to Captain, the crew will vote in a randomised order each day
 • Determined Vibes - Removes the crew's ability to pass their vote
 • Energetic Vibes - If nobody has gone overboard after the Captain has voted, a second round of voting begins. Votes from the previous round carry forward!

Whichever vibe they pick will stay in effect for the rest of the voyage. However, each day The Brewmaster doesn't play in, they can choose to change up the vibe, and bring a new mood to the party. How will having The Brewmaster aboard change the way your crew votes people over?
Grab Limited Time Customisation Options
During Oktoberfest on the Ocean, Sam Sherbot and Nat O’Bother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop Ship! If you buy a customisation option during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, you can use it all year round - but the items will be disappearing from sale when the event is over, so don’t delay and buy today!
The “Biggest Bratwurst” Event!
Go on a sailing adventure during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, and any day when there’s a successful job there is a chance you may encounter the “Biggest Bratwurst” event! The pirates stop for a cook-out, each grabbing a sausage from the grill. Some of the sausages are much bigger than the others though, and everyone knows a pirate needs a full stomach to carry out the most important duties on the ship. The bigger your meal, the higher your rank on the ship! So watch out, if you pull a chipolata, you might end up as Stowaway!

The Biggest Bratwurst event is sure to mix things up amongst the crew, changing who’s next to each other and therefore who’s playing in for different groups of jobs together. Not only that, but if you’re playing a trait game, you might want to be extra careful of who ends up next to The Sensitive!
Oktoberfest on the Ocean Bots
Invite bots into your game during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, and you may encounter any of four unique bots! Look out for Chicken Bot, Hans Botmann, Ida Botmann and Bot Dog, all of whom are eager to board your ship and throw you overboard! These bots will only join your games during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, so take the chance to meet them now before they chicken dance away for the rest of the year!

The Pirate Pool Party!

Make a splash with The Pirate Pool Party!

Across June and July, we’re celebrating with the wettest Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, The Pirate Pool Party! Running from 24th June to 22nd July, celebrate the warmer weather with a party dedicated to all things poolside, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
Seasonal Traits: The Shark & The Bait
The Shark and The Bait appear as a pair, and one is hunting the other! In any game where The Shark and The Bait appear, The Shark has a unique victory condition. If they're able to get The Bait thrown overboard three times - through events and/or voting - they will automatically and instantly achieve a solo victory!

Is someone behaving suspiciously? A bit too keen to throw someone overboard? Maybe they're The Shark! Is someone claiming to be The Bait? Maybe they just don't want to go overboard and really they're The Cursed? Hmm, tricky times ahead crew...

Encountering some mysterious haunted sandcastles, the crew must each choose one of the three to hide amongst! But be wary, for once all pirates have picked a hiding place, the most popular pick will reveal how many of the pirates choosing to hide amongst it was actually a ghost!

Watch out for pirates choosing to hide amongst their peers, or those choosing to go it alone hoping not to be discovered. Whether pirates are jumping in with others or not, there’s bound to be deception around the spooky sandcastles!

These bots will only join your games during The Pirate Pool Party, so take the chance to meet them now before they swim away for the rest of the year!

Rise of the Kraken

The Kraken Awakens!

You thought the Kraken wouldn't notice all the times you fished up a squid on the island, huh? Well you were wrong! The Kraken is angry and looking for revenge!
The Kraken Rises
The Kraken Rises is our second adventure event, and like The Island Adventure, it has a whole host of minigames and challenges for pirates to encounter! As the Kraken emerges from the sea, you'll have the chance to fight it in different ways, before confronting it for a final showdown.

The Kraken has five weaknesses for you to exploit, and if you successfully wound the Kraken it'll be much weaker in the final battle. However, each weakness comes with good and bad things that can happen for the crew, so be careful and choose where to aim your harpoons wisely!

Once you've had your shot at wounding the Kraken, it will bear down on the ship ready for a final battle. All of the crew need to work together to fight the Kraken off! And whether you're victorious, or suffer defeat at the tentacles of the Kraken, the effects of the battle will surely be felt for the next few days of your voyage.

New Customisation Options!

Sam Sherbot has gotten themselves new items for sale in the Outfit Shop aboard the Shop Ship, amongst them are a full Kraken outfit and the brand new Pride collection!

Not wanting to be outdone, Nat O'Bother also has a few new pieces in the Ship Shop aboard the Shop Ship. Definitely check out the Rainbow Hull and Rainbow Generator!

New Achievements

With the rising of the Kraken come new achievements, and as always, new hats. If you can achieve any of the following, you'll have some brand new pirate headwear to ensure you're definitely talk of the town!

 • Oceanographer - Explore all the different ways to wound the Kraken during the The Kraken Rises event
 • Feast for the Kraken - Hide the entire crew in the same place during the The Kraken's Beak event
 • Apple of my Eye - Successfully blind the Kraken in the The Kraken's Eye event without making any mistakes
 • Potion Explosion - As The Witch, use a Potion of Overboarding to throw yourself overboard
 • Buzz Off - Encounter the Wasp Nest event twenty-five times

Five new traits!

As the Kraken rises out of the ocean, so too do five new traits for the crew! As always, these traits can be assigned to humans or ghosts, so get ready for yer mateys to cause you a whole world of trouble!
New Trait: The Contrarian
The Contrarian is, for all intents and purposes, contrary. Whenever they would become a human, they instead become a ghost. Whenever they would become a ghost, they instead become a human! And yes, this includes when they go overboard - so they'll always arrive back on the ship as a ghost stowaway...
New Trait: The Bodyswapper
On days when The Bodyswapper does not play in, they can choose any other pirate. During the pre-event phase, the Bodyswapper will trade teams with their selected pirate. It's freaky! Will the Bodyswapper try to swap with a human, or a ghost? Can you keep track of who's who?
New Trait: The Brawler
On days when The Brawler does not play in, they can challenge any other pirate to a brawl. The brawl plays out in the pre-event phase, with the traditional pirate brawling technique of rock-paper-scissors. If The Brawler wins the brawl, they'll steal their opponent's rank on the ship!
New Trait: The Beast
Each and every time The Beast goes overboard, whether that's through an event or voting, their voting power increases by two. It keeps going up every time they're thrown overboard too, so be careful! Throwing The Beast overboard too many times means they have some big voting power...
New Trait: The Medium
On days when The Medium does not play in, they can write a hidden message that will be revealed only to the ghosts in the pre-event phase. Whether the Medium is a human or a ghost, what information will they reveal and how will they coordinate, or trick, the ghosts?
New Trait Icons
To help pirates familiarise themselves with the different traits, we've also added a unique icon for each and every trait. You can check these out in the Captain's Log, or you can be surprised by each trait icon as you discover it in your black spot!

Pirate Booty!

Just because your game's over doesn't mean the fun is! Once all the humans and ghosts have been uncovered, you'll now have the chance to see the booty you've collected on your voyage. There are various ways that you can earn coins in-game, and the Booty Board will help you to better understand where your coins from. Additionally, we've made it slightly easier to earn coins across the game. More cool outfits for everyone!

The Booty Board also awards three accolades to members of the crew. Who will be celebrating? It might be an opportunity to celebrate a pirate who captained the ship to victory, or someone who changed teams most frequently!

We're Going on an Adventure!

With the introduction of a second adventure event, we're also adding a new event that can pop up giving pirates the option to pick which adventure they want to go on. Every single member of the crew gets a say, and the destination is decided by The Wheel of Fate (The Compass of Fate's older sibling). Will you set sail for the island, or can you see the beastly Kraken on the horizon?

Limiting Some Traits to Certain Crew Sizes

To promote game balance, and to make sure that everyone has a fun time when playing Trait games, we've set player limits for a few of the traits. In most cases, this means that you need a certain number of pirates in a game before a trait will appear. You can see how big the crew needs to be on the game customisation screen, and once your game starts the Trait Guide on each player's device will remove any traits that didn't make it into the game.

Take Photos of your Ship

When customising your ship at the Ship Shop, we've added a little camera button that gives you a nice full screen view of your ship with a fancy name placard. This is great way to share photos of your different ships, and show off all the cool things you've bought!

Pre-event Information in the Captain's Log

Pre-events are those events that happen before the main event. The little ones that come into play when you use an active trait for example. To help you keep track, we've added these to the Captain's Log - and most importantly - they're listed in the order they'll happen each day. Confused about whether The Witch or The Wishful gets to use their power first? The Captain's Log tells all!

Improved Event Information on your Device

We've all done it. The event is The Spy. It's you. You choose someone. You forget to look whether they're human or ghost, and that information is lost to the seas. Not anymore! Information revealed during events will now be displayed in a pop-up, that won't go away until you're ready. If you close the popup by accident, or just need a recap, your game log will now keep a personalised history of any information revealed to you in events. Handy!

The Bots are Getting Smarter

We've made some improvements when playing with bots in trait games, and in particular, we've taught them how to use a number of different traits. Bots could already activate the traits of The Wishful and The Diligent, but bots can now also activate The Witch, The Shapeshifter, The Brawler, The Meddler and The Bodyswapper!
A few other bits and pieces...
• When visiting the Captain's Log to check out the bios for the various bots, we've added pronouns for each.
 • When in the lobby, you can use the new 'Add Bot' button to add a bot directly to your lobby. Super useful if you're looking for a particular bot to join your game!

As always, don’t forget that you can join us every Saturday at 8pm BST on Twitch for our weekly dev stream, or pop by our YouTube channel to see Let’s Plays of Paper Pirates, How To videos and more! Or if you’re looking for a crew to set sail with make sure to join our Discord!

Joining Paper Pirates for the duration of Spring Sailing is the seasonal trait, The Spring Chicken! Play a trait game, and one of the crew may find themselves with this happy-go-lucky, seasonal appropriate trait.

What seems like a blessing may be a curse - watch out if you're a ghostly Spring Chicken and you're almost next to The Sensitive...
The Grand Spring Egg Hunt
