The Swapful Update

New traits and new events galore!

In this Paper Pirates update, we're adding seven new traits, including one exclusive to games that make use of the Crew's Choice event selection method, and five new events to help ensure that every voyage is completely unique.
New Trait: The Acrobats
The Acrobats is a new active trait for both Trait and Trait+ games. The Acrobats appear as a pair, and on a day when either of The Acrobats doesn't play in, they can choose to trade their rank on the ship with each other.

There's no limit to the amount of times The Acrobats can activate their trait, so they can continue swapping back and forth as long as they're not in a job. How will the power struggle of The Acrobats change the team dynamics on the ship?
New Trait: The Watcher
The Watcher is a new active trait for both Trait and Trait+ games. On Day One, The Watcher may choose any other pirate from the crew. Any time that pirate plays in, The Watcher will be informed whether they chose to obey or disobey the job.

When The Watcher doesn't play in, they may choose to change which pirate they're watching. Like The Protector, they may choose to watch a different pirate as many times as they choose. They can even watch the captain!
New Trait: The Clairvoyant
The Clairvoyant is a new active trait for both Trait and Trait+ games. On days when The Clairvoyant does not play in, they may activate their trait to privately and secretly check how many pirates are currently on the ghost team.

They may only use this power three times per voyage, so choosing when to check could provide pivotal strategic information. For example, you could check before and after an overboarding to see whether the number of ghosts goes down or up.
New Trait: The Influencer
The Influencer is a new passive trait for Trait and Trait+ games using the Crew's Choice event selection method. Customise a game to change the event selection method to Crew's Choice, and every day when an event occurs, each crew member can use the Compass of Fate to vote on which event they'd like to see happen. It's not majority rules, so even a single vote could be enough to doom the crew!

The Influencer has more power over the Compass of Fate, and every time they vote for an event, it will be three times more likely to be chosen. Will they use this influence for good, or for evil?
New Trait: The Vindicator
The Vindicator is a new passive trait for Trait and Trait+ games. Be wary of any voyage with The Vindicator, as they have quite a nasty power that's automatically activated any time they're voted overboard.

When The Vindicator is voted overboard, they'll place a curse on the pirates that voted for them. At the start of each subsequent voting round, The Vindicator will automatically place a number of votes on each pirate that doomed them - and these votes will continue to appear every day until a pirate is next voted overboard. Be careful when voting!
New Trait: The Resilient
The Resilient is a new passive trait for Trait and Trait+ games. The Resilient is harder to throw over than other pirates, and requires three votes above the current threshold as a minimum to be thrown overboard.
New Trait: The Fickle
The Fickle is a new active trait for Trait+ games. On days when The Fickle does not play in, they may activate their treat to privately and secretly exchange their current passive trait for another trait that no other pirate currently has.

They may only use this power three times per voyage, so they can't just change endlessly, but a pirate who's The Fickle could be The Tainted one minute and The Pure the next. Even worse, a pirate could just be pretending to be The Fickle - now that's a power play!
Updated Trait: The Gardener
The Gardener has gained access to a whole new plant! Spend three days growing some Deadly Nightshades to decorate the ship, and they'll make it so that events which mostly end with a pirate going overboard will be much more likely to occur. Very dangerous!
New Event: Shifting Seasons
Shifting Seasons is a new event that appears in all game modes. When a Shifting Seasons event occurs, the crew will be able to vote on a seasonal change that will have a temporary significant impact on gameplay. The crew can choose whether they want to experience Longer Days or Longer Nights!

When the Longer Days effect is in play, there are two chances for events to occur each day. There's nothing stopping the same event from happening twice in a row, so you could even have a double Exorcism - or a double Possession! The events drawn in the bonus slot come from a selection of key events, so you won't end up with two Island Adventures in one day. Longer Days lasts for two days from when Shifting Seasons occurs.

When the Longer Nights effect is in play, all pirates will have a second chance to cast a vote during voting provided no pirate has gone overboard yet. Every vote counts when another pirate might use that vote to throw someone overboard! Longer Nights lasts for three voting rounds from when Shifting Seasons occurs.
New Event: Free For All
Free For All is a new event that appears only in Trait+ games. When a Free For All happens, an ongoing effect will trigger that allows all pirates to use their active traits without spending any resources. This means that active traits with charges will get one free use, The Witch can brew a potion without using any of their resources, The Reaper could enact a pact without spending souls, and many more possibilities.

The effect only lasts for one day, so be careful who you choose to put in the job when Free For All is in effect. It also doesn't renew any of your resources, so if you've already used up all of your charges or spent all of your ingredients - you still won't be able to activate your ability. Maybe it's always worth saving a charge for the end of the voyage?
New Event: Swapportunity
Swapportunity is a new event that appears only in Trait+ games. When a Swapportunity happens, all pirates will have the option to choose whether they want to swap their passive trait with another pirate on the ship, or keep the passive trait they currently have.

If at least two pirates opt into the Swapportunity, then two pirates will be randomly selected to permanently exchange their passive traits. It's like The Traders, but for anyone, and only once!
New Event: Freakier Friday
Freaky Friday is a really popular event, and we've somehow made it even freakier! Freakier Friday is an event appearing in all game modes, which picks three pirates at random and shuffles their teams completely.

You'll know which three pirates were picked for the exchange, but you won't know whose team has gone to who, so there's lots of mystery to figure out!
New Trait Event: The Shapeshifter's Switch
The Shapeshifter's Switch is a new Trait event which can occur only when one of the crew is The Shapeshifter. When The Shapeshifter's Switch occurs, The Shapeshifter can choose any other pirate and flip their team. That means if they're a ghost they'll become human, and vice-versa. The pirate they pick is revealed to the whole team, so they have to be confident about their choice!

Using The Shapeshifter's Switch will also use up one of The Shapeshifter's charges, meaning they can shift their shape one fewer time. Will they be willing to sacrifice a charge for greater good - or to cause mass chaos?

Haunted Seas - Halloween Event!

Set Sail on Haunted Seas for Halloween!

Throughout October, celebrate Paper Pirates’ spookiest seasonal event by taking part in the Halloween-themed Haunted Seas event! Running from 1st October - 31st October, a whole host of spooky goings on are waiting for you.
Seasonal Trait+: The Vampires
Play a Traits+ game during Haunted Seas, and you might find a spooky new Traits+ exclusive passive trait has joined the crew. When a pirate starts the game as The Vampire, a special day one event, The Vampire's Bite, will automatically trigger. During this event, The Vampire can choose any other pirate - immediately turning that pirate's passive trait into The Vampire too.

The two vampires then have a unique victory condition they can achieve: Every time either vampire votes to throw a pirate overboard, they will feed on that pirate, gaining power. Once fed on, that pirate cannot be fed on again by either vampire.

If The Vampires are able to successfully throw all other pirates overboard, they will reach maximum power - causing the voyage to immediately end, and declaring the two pirates with The Vampire passive trait as the only winners.
Seasonal Trait: The Werewolf
Available in all trait games during Haunted Seas is the spooky passive trait, The Werewolf.

On odd numbered days, when the moon is in its crescent phase, The Werewolf is weakened. Any votes cast by The Werewolf on these days will only have a voting power of one, regardless of their rank on the ship.

However, on even numbered days, when the moon is full, The Werewolf is strengthened! Any votes cast by The Werewolf on these days will have double their usual voting power. Yikes! They might even start throwing people overboard all on their own...

Will you get hunted by The Werewolf?
Trick or Treat?
Go on a sailing adventure during the Haunted Seas event, and the Halloween Spirits may appear to one of the crew. During the Event phase of the game, the Trick or Treat? event may activate for the duration of Haunted Seas, offering a randomly chosen pirate a choice. Will they take the easy option and choose a treat, or are they feeling brave and willing to risk a trick?
Be Surprised by the Audience!
If an audience is observing your voyage during Haunted Seas, they might find themselves empowered with a surprise. The 'Audience Surprise' seasonal event asks the audience whether they'd like to surprise the crew with either a trick, or a treat.

If more of the audience choose trick, an event which generally favours the ghost team will immediately happen. If more of the audience choose treat, an event which generally favours the human team will immediately happen.

Will your audience surprise you with a lovely treat, or a mischievous trick?

Oktoberfest on the Ocean!
Grab a sausage and celebrate Oktoberfest!
As we see out September, we’re celebrating the ninth Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Oktoberfest on the Ocean! Running from 18th to 30th September, celebrating the end of the season with a shindig dedicated to pretzels, sausages, chicken dancing and more, with a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
Seasonal Trait: The Brewmaster
The Brewmaster is here, and they're ready to get the party started! When you have a Brewmaster aboard, they'll be asked to set the vibe of the ship during the first day. Whichever vibe they choose will mix up the Paper Pirates voting rules! New for 2024, The Brewmaster has two brand new vibes to experiment with.

There are a total of six vibes The Brewmaster can pick for the ship:
 • Aggressive Vibes - Grants each pirate one additional voting power
 • Chaotic Vibes - Instead of voting from Stowaway to Captain, the crew will vote in a randomised order each day
 • Commanding Vibes (new) - Voting each day will follow 'Majority Rules', where each pirate has one voting power and the pirate with the most votes goes overboard
 • Determined Vibes - Removes the crew's ability to pass their vote
 • Energetic Vibes - If nobody has gone overboard after the Captain has voted, a second round of voting begins. Votes from the previous round carry forward
 • Secretive Vibes (new) - When a pirate casts a vote, the crew will not see who they voted for

Every voyage, The Brewmaster will be given a random selection of four out of the six vibes to choose. Whichever vibe they pick will stay in effect for the rest of the voyage. However, each day The Brewmaster doesn't play in, they can choose to change up the vibe, and bring a new mood to the party. How will having The Brewmaster aboard change the way your crew votes people over?
Grab Limited Time Customisation Options

The “Biggest Bratwurst” Event!
Go on a sailing adventure during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, and any day when there’s a successful job there is a chance you may encounter the “Biggest Bratwurst” event! The pirates stop for a cook-out, each grabbing a sausage from the grill. Some of the sausages are much bigger than the others though, and everyone knows a pirate needs a full stomach to carry out the most important duties on the ship. The bigger your meal, the higher your rank on the ship! So watch out, if you pull a chipolata, you might end up as Stowaway!

The Biggest Bratwurst event is sure to mix things up amongst the crew, changing who’s next to each other and therefore who’s playing in for different groups of jobs together. Not only that, but if you’re playing a trait game, you might want to be extra careful of who ends up next to The Sensitive!
Oktoberfest on the Ocean Bots
Invite bots into your game during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, and you may encounter any of four unique bots! Look out for Chicken Bot, Hans Botmann, Ida Botmann and Bot Dog, all of whom are eager to board your ship and throw you overboard! These bots will only join your games during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, so take the chance to meet them now before they chicken dance away for the rest of the year!

The Pirate Pool Party!

Across June and July, we’re celebrating with the wettest Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, The Pirate Pool Party! Running from 24th June to 22nd July, celebrate the warmer weather with a party dedicated to all things poolside, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
Seasonal Traits: The Shark & The Bait
The Shark and The Bait appear as a pair, and one is hunting the other! In any game where The Shark and The Bait appear, The Shark has a unique victory condition. If they're able to get The Bait thrown overboard three times - through events and/or voting - they will automatically and instantly achieve a solo victory! Both The Shark and The Bait are passive traits.

Is someone behaving suspiciously? A bit too keen to throw someone overboard? Maybe they're The Shark! Is someone claiming to be The Bait? Maybe they just don't want to go overboard and really they're The Cursed? Hmm, tricky times ahead crew...

To make things even more challenging for the crew, The Bait will always appear as a ghost when their team is revealed through traits and events. Be vigilant crew!
A Special Community Bounty
Starting on the 24th June, there'll be a unique Community Bounty for everyone to complete. We have two weeks (14 days) to play 150 Traits+ games, to unlock a unique reward for everyone who logs in during The Pirate Pool Party.
The “Spooky Sandcastles” Event!
Go on a sailing adventure during The Pirate Pool Party, and any day when there’s a failed job there is a chance you may encounter the “Spooky Sandcastles” event. Encountering some mysterious haunted sandcastles, the crew must each choose one of the three to hide amongst! But be wary, for once all pirates have picked a hiding place, the most popular pick will reveal how many of the pirates choosing to hide amongst it was actually a ghost!

Watch out for pirates choosing to hide amongst their peers, or those choosing to go it alone hoping not to be discovered. Whether pirates are jumping in with others or not, there’s bound to be deception around the spooky sandcastles!
Get your Party On in the Photo Booth
To celebrate The Pirate Pool Party, there is one limited-time Background and one limited-time Foil available in the Photo Booth, in the Captain’s Log. Take the opportunity to snap your favourite pirate templates, and share any pics you take!

These bots will only join your games during The Pirate Pool Party, so take the chance to meet them now before they swim away for the rest of the year!

The Traits+ Update
New Game Mode: Traits+
We're super excited to launch our first new game mode since we introduced Traits way back in March 2021. Paper Pirates' new game mode, Traits+, is a whole new way to sail with traits!

When playing a Traits+ game, each crewmate will be given TWO traits - one active, and one passive. Active traits are traits that typically do something during the job phase when you either do, or don't, play in for a job. Think things like The Meddler, The Shapeshifter, and The Brawler. Passive traits are traits that are typically always in play. Think things like The Pure, The Tainted, and The Contrarian.

We've updated the Captain's Log and the game customisation screen to clearly list which traits are active and which are passive. If your voyage configuration doesn't have enough active or passive traits to go round the whole crew, some of the pirates might be declared Innocent (in place of a passive trait), or Inactive (in place of an active trait).

Traits+ offers a whole new strategic layer to Paper Pirates, with over three hundred potential combinations. Will your traits work well with each other? Will they force you to side with the human team, or the ghost team? Will they pull you in two different directions? And how will you ever know who you can trust.
New Trait: The Traders
Our very first Traits+ exclusive Trait is The Traders, an active trait that always appears as a pair. The two pirates with The Traders can activate their shared ability any time either of them is not a job.

When activated, The Traders will exchange their passive traits with each other. When the traits swap, they carry all their charges, accumulated stats, and information with them. This opens up a raft of new strategic potential!

Be warned though... The Traders power only requires one of the two Traders to activate it, so if you're the second Trader, you might find yourself in an endless tug-of-war with your companion for a good passive trait!
New Trait: The Manipulator
The Manipulator is a new active trait appearing in both Trait and Traits+ game modes. The Manipulator's powerful ability allows them to target a pirate on days when they don't play in and force them to vote for a specific pirate the next time they vote.

The Manipulator can use their power three times per voyage, and their power lasts until that player next votes, and also removes that pirate's option to pass their vote. The Manipulator could control of The Assassin to utilise them to nefarious means, take control of a mid-ship ghost engine, or force the Captain to vote for the Stowaway. The options are endless!
New Trait: The Retaliator
The Retaliator is a new passive trait appearing in both Trait and Traits+ game modes. The Retaliator's base voting power is always increased by the number of votes currently cast against them.

The Retaliator's strength comes in taking revenge on those pirates that vote against them, but, it also has a raft of strategic potential. If you're willing to co-operate with other pirates, you could pool all your votes onto The Retaliator, concentrating the potential possession targets if you accidentally vote over a human...

But be careful, The Retaliator could always use all that accumulated voting power right back at you...
New Trait: The Torn
The Torn is a new passive trait appearing in both Trait and Traits+ game modes. When it's The Torn's turn to vote, they have the opportunity to vote twice! Each vote has half their base voting power (rounded up).

The Torn can use each of their votes however they like. They can pass them both, use each one on a different pirate, the same pirate, or even use one and then pass the other. This allows them to be a little safer when throwing someone overboard, or to hedge their bets if they're just not sure.
New Event: Change of Trait
Change of Trait is a new event appearing only in Traits+ games. When a Change of Trait happens, a randomly chosen pirate will be offered the opportunity to change their passive trait. If they choose to accept, their passive trait will immediately change into a new passive trait that isn't already claimed by anyone else on the ship.

The Change of Trait pirate doesn't get to see which passive trait they'll get in advance, so it's always risky. Watch out after a Change of Trait event - could a pirate have just become The Tainted?
Five New Achievements
With new content comes new achievements, and with new achievements comes new hats! There are five new tasks for you to complete to earn a lovely bounty of new hats for your crew to enjoy. The new achievements are:

 • A Traitorous Sequel: Play a Traits+ Game
 • Murderous Mind Games: As The Manipulator, force another pirate to throw you overboard
 • The Retaliator's Revenge: As The Retaliator, throw a pirate who voted for you overboard
 • Proficient Prognosis: As The Psychic, correctly predict which pirate will next go overboard in a The Psychic's Prediction event
 • Top and Tail: As The Traders, trade traits while occupying the Captain and Stowaway ranks
Time Warp in Trait and Traits+ Games
With Traits+ offering the opportunity to be really playful with traits, we've updated the Time Warp event to now impact traits in both Trait and Traits+ game modes. This means that a Time Warp will now revert any trait progress, but also restores any charges spent in the aborted timeline. This means that The Witch recovers their used ingredients, The Legion might lose or gain ghosts, The Undecided might lose their current trait, and much more.

Make sure to check your Black Spot after a Time Warp to check who - or what - you even are...!
Trait Player Count Requirement Updates
We've reviewed the player count requirements for all traits, mostly bringing more advanced traits into smaller games. This will help games to feel fresh and exciting no matter how big your crews, and helps to balance the active and passive traits available to all crew sizes. We'll keep this under review, making changes where necessary.
