The Festival has started!

We’ve arrived at the Festival of Kickstarter! The Clan has already swam in the salty waters of the sea, feasted on their harvest, and danced to the rhythm of their drums. Now it’s time to listen to the tale of our origins and the greatness of our people:

Devlog #10: Traveling to Festival

Kickstarter Festival

Hello Clan! We’d like to invite you to our Festival to celebrate all our achievements and honor the journey we still have yet to travel.

The Festival and Reveals

From today to the 23rd, our whole Pacha Clan will be traveling to the festival location. Along the way we’ll be showcasing some of the members of our Clan, including 4 who are romance-able. Each one will bring one of their favorite items to offer Pacha, mother nature (for those keeping track, add this to your notes under “Items loved by the NPC”).

During the journey, Voda, the tracker, foresees encounters with new friendly animals. What could this guy be? Can it be mounted? Does it have fur or lay eggs?

Stay tuned on Twitter, Discord and Instagram for the reveals!

Kickstarter Festival Challenge

Today, we’re also launching the Kickstarter Festival Challenge, a way to earn in-game rewards 🏆 before and during the Kickstarter Campaign. Even though we’d love to have your support on Kickstarter, we want to reward you too for spreading the word of Pacha in your social networks 🐦. That’s why these unlocked rewards will be for everyone 🙆‍♂️.
How to play?
Use the power of your social networks to spread the word of Pacha. When a milestone is reached a fire will light up 🔥. Rewards will unlock after a certain amount of fires are lit.

Before the Kickstarter campaign, the ways to light fires and unlock rewards are:

On the 23rd, we’ll reveal even more ways to light fires so you have more chances to earn rewards later on too.

You can check the status of the Challenge on our website and on Discord too!

Discord bot

One of the challenges that are unlocked today is a fresh-out-of-the-oven Discord bot. We wanted to give you a way to work towards a common goal in the Discord. Join us in our Clan’s virtual village to !plant, !water, !harvest, and !explore. The more we do, the more Contribution our Clan earns.

During and after the Kickstarter campaign, we’ll keep working on the bot adding more commands to grow our village.

We’ll be giving out alpha access to the top 2 Clan members that participate the most in February and in March! Details on Discord, join us & play!

Sneak peak

One of the traditions of this festival is telling the story of the Clan, how we got here, all we have achieved, and even a hint of the road that’s still to be walked. Maeri, one of the elders, will tell the story (somehow she managed to do a trailer so you can get a better picture).

Here’s a sneak peak of what you’ll watch on the 23rd.

Oh no! Our world is changing! What are we to do now that the lands we used to roam are no longer the same?

The lights in the sky are our ancestor’s campfires and we can see them reflected on this rock at night. They must be trying to tell us something.

This is an idea we’ve got from the start of the project and also something that has come up as a suggestion on Discord. The ability to customize your own pottery and tapestry! Want your face on the wall? How about your cat on that pot?

And with that we wrap up this edition! Thanks again for reading and for all your support. Help us reach more people, earn rewards, and get ready to celebrate the Kickstarter Festival on the 23rd!

Devlog #9: A Fertile Land

Hello Pachans, we’ve reached the end of the year. December has been a month of game design and goals review. This devlog is not going to be our standard feature-based entry but a review of what we’ve achieved and what’s to come.

First of all we want to thank you for your continued support. So here’s a candle for each and everyone one of you who makes this Clan, our Clan.

It’s never easy to begin any kind of project. Luckily, as brothers, we always had each other’s back. As kids we loved playing games together and even when life led us apart, playing a game was always a way to reconnect. We were working as devs and artists, we weren’t unhappy but there was a creative itch, something we realized we had to do, and that’s how we embarked on this journey of making a game.

Us, somewhere, a while ago (I wasn't trying to push him into the water, I promise)

Every piece of the puzzle started to fall in the right place. The farming & life genre, the stone age theme, an amazing artist who’s excited about the project, a local publisher that gives us enough support without imposing their view on the game.

All those pieces were great, but we were lacking one essential thing, and it was you, those who wanted to be with us from the start. We presented the idea of Roots of Pacha to all of you back in May and got really excited to find a community with whom to share our dream. The game has changed a lot ever since. The art and the gameplay started to take a unique shape.

Making a game involves a lot of planning, trying out the idea and then deciding if it fits the game or not. Sometimes you need to scrap it all and start from scratch, and that changed our schedule and plans. We realized along the way that we needed more help to be able to iterate faster and include things that we wanted to have in the game, so we expanded our team.

We started working with wonderful people part-time and were able to do more concept art and game assets, add music and SFX, and improve the UI. The game has now reached a mature state where a lot of the mechanics are done, and adding and changing things is a much smoother process.

Thanks momomo, sizu, darkaos!

The best moments of the year were when you shared the excitement for something we’d done, suggested a feature, created beautiful fanart, or simply followed our journey. It honestly renews our energy and helps to make Roots of Pacha even more special.

The game is at a state where we are almost ready to begin alpha testing. We’re making a minigame for our Discord channel for us to have fun together and as a way to gain access to the alpha. Will you go out and explore? How about planting wheat, or brushing our newly tamed bison? What idea will we develop together?.

There’s still a lot of work to do but the goal is much clearer, and we feel it’s the right time for the team to grow in size once again. Because of this, we feel a Kickstarter campaign would be a great way to do it.

Roots of Pacha is a game about the community, about how we, humans, worked together to progress and achieve things that were thought to be impossible. Kickstarter not only will help us grow the team, it reflects how all of us can take Roots of Pacha and make it even greater than we originally thought it could be.

We’re really excited and a bit nervous about this new challenge. For now you can help us by following the Kickstarter page and spreading the word. Details will come in the following weeks.

Thanks for reading and Happy New Year ✨✨✨!

Devlog #8: 100% Whole Wheat

Connect

We did our first livestream with Crytivo Connect showcasing the gameplay for the first time and explaining some of our core mechanics. Thanks everyone for joining and sharing your thoughts. If you haven’t watched it yet, it’s now on Youtube

Racing tournament

We felt we were missing some action, and we always wanted to include a sport or tournament inside the game to break the routine of planting and evolving. After some research we found that horse racing is one of the ancient sports and we immediately thought about how many rideable animals we have in Roots of Pacha.

We really had a lot of fun racing our animals. There’s still some work to do, and some of our ideas include giving stats to mounts, improving mounts with friendship and special items, choosing a team and becoming the star rider of a season.

Pacha Hearth

Pachans are very social and so they have a common building where they spend rainy days, gather for a warm meal and receive visitors. Vuak, the sha-man and spiritual leader of the clan, is the one in charge of welcoming people to this place. Here’s a preview of his room which is inside the building.

Forest minimap

As we continue to develop the world of Roots of Pacha, we add minimap sections of it. This is how the forest minimap looks like.

We’re also exploring if the minimap is something you already have, or if you have to complete it as you discover new areas.

Food producers and preservation

A few devlogs ago we talked about how important food preservation was in the stone age. The idea was not only to improve the shelf time of food but also its nutrition.

For example, in the process of making bread, the natural yeast that is present in the grains not only make flour rise and produce a spongy bread, but they also make the nutrients of the grain available for the human body to absorb.

At that point in time, most processes were manual and we felt it was a good idea to represent that in the game. This is the case of the Mortar and Pestle that’s used to grind grains into flours and also to mix, and whisk.

Once you’ve got flour, mix in a little bit of water and let the dough ferment for a few hours. The Fermenter is a processor in Roots of Pacha that lets the natural yeasts in grain, flours and fruits turn into other products.

As a side note, yes, we read your comments, and yes there will be booze making in Roots of Pacha. For better or for worse, alcohol is ingrained in human history.

Finally, after getting fermented dough, you shape it and throw it in the Oven to get that nice loaf.

Another producer that we didn’t get a chance to show in the stream is the Solar Dryer. It’s made out of a couple of poles with nets in between that use the power of the sun to dry fruits and vegetables. The Solar Dryer accepts multiple items at once.

Taming minigame

After discovering the flute that lets you communicate with animals, you need to attune to them to increase friendship. Flute playing was too immediate and not very rewarding, so we are trying this minigame where friendship will increase depending on how you play the melody.

Fishing minigame

Fishing the shallow waters was a bit simple too, and we had a minigame we didn’t like where you had to hit keys in a certain order.

In the new one we developed this month, you have to remain calm and focus on one specific fish. Keep following it as it moves across the water nearby, but don’t do it too fast, the ripples will make it go away. Once you’re confident enough and you can see it, take a chance to fish it!.

That's it for this edition, thanks for reading. We hope to read your comments on Discord and see you next time!
