Mission Briefing: Trooper Classes

Fall in, Troopers! This briefing will prepare you for combat with the Bugs and is mandatory final training before you’re issued your Morita Mk1.

Valaka, the planet we’re in orbit around, is a cruel place for our beloved Deep Space Vanguard. We will be facing off against the Arachnids’ superior numbers, but you won’t be fighting alone. As a member of Brimstone Company, you’ve arrived as part of the full squadron to assess and secure this planet's resources. Towards this end, each Trooper will be specialized per mission as Hunter, Bastion, or Operator to complete your objectives, achieve victory, and - with a little luck - survive. Now, before you board your dropship, let’s get you up to speed on the classes in this platoon.

First, you’ve got your Hunters who use their high-intensity aerobic training to reach the frontline first and specialize in bringing the hurt. Hunters are equipped with jump jets to gain the high ground and strike the enemy from above. As they progress in their careers, they also gain access to a variety of explosives and deployables to rain down hell upon the Bugs. If battlefield mobility is what you’re after, the Hunter class is for you.

Next up, Bastions: experts in heavy weapons and crowd control. When you’ve got Bugs tearing through your base’s walls, you’ll want the added stopping power of their Morita Mk III SAW. When surrounded or holding a position, the Bastion can deploy their shield wall, increasing their armor and turning the Trooper into a living turret. Experienced Bastions also earn the right to use equipment that allow them to establish a line of defense and hold it with suppressive fire support. Looking to make the Bugs pay for every inch they try to advance? The Bastion has you covered.

Finally, some say most importantly, we have Operators. A good Operator can turn the tide of battle, providing mission-critical medical and utility support. Their “surgical-grade UAV medic” as the eggheads call it is an actual lifesaver, automatically healing nearby Troopers in need. Operators can also carry twice as much ore and gas as the average Trooper as well as set up ammo crates or healing stations while on mission away from a base. Their advanced gear includes a variety of chemical munitions, laying down pain on a whole mess of Bugs at once. Your squad isn’t going to last long without one of these combat strategists on the team.
“Together, the three classes are capable of succeeding against the onslaught of Bugs, between the Hunter’s high damage output, the Bastion’s ability to hold the line, and the Operator’s ability to keep the team alive.”
- Renn, Starship Troopers: Extermination Designer
Now, once you’re planetside, we’ll be radioing in commands from HQ - these objectives must be completed before you, your squad, heck the whole zone succumbs to overwhelming Bug presence. Coordinate with your Brimstone Company teammates to establish a course of action, assign missions, and stay alive. Troopers are responsible for sourcing and managing the resources required to build and keep their base secure; working in parallel in smaller squads is critical so that no Trooper tackles a situation solo and risks being downed by some nasty Bug mandibles. Should any Trooper fall, each of you has the ability to revive them in the midst of battle to get them back up and in the fight - before they bleed out would be ideal. You’d want the same done for you.

Learn to rely on each other’s abilities and apply them efficiently to the objective or situation and you will make it back. Need to claim a resource point? An Operator attached to a pair of Hunters can keep their damaged partners alive with their drone as they face Bug resistance. While you’re at it, add a Bastion to complete the squad to lay down cover fire from behind their Bug barrier to hold the point and get the team that much closer to victory.

And that’s time, ladies and gentlemen! Get to the dropship, you’ve got a date with the ground below. I want to see teamwork out there, Troopers!

Pyre out.

Is Starship Troopers Extermination crossplay?

Will there be Starship Troopers Extermination crossplay? Following its early access launch, we wanted to find out whether you'll be able to team up in the 16-player co-op FPS with players from other platforms. After all, it looks like you'll need all the help you can get against the hordes of giant insects.

Squad up and arm yourself with your Deep Space Vanguard Trooper gear as the Bugs descend and threaten existence. Starship Troopers: Extermination FAQs
Is more content coming to Starship Troopers: Extermination?
Yes! This is just the very beginning of our development journey - content will be added on an ongoing basis through the Early Access process. We want to hear your thoughts, your feedback, see your bug reports, and more! This game has been a labor of love for us so far, but now it becomes a labor of love for both us AND our community. We will be teasing out more details of what is to come, soon, and for now, we’ve launched with a lower price-point so fans jumping into the game early are rewarded for being with us from day one!
How long is Starship Troopers: Extermination planned to be in Early Access?
We plan to have Starship Troopers: Extermination in Early Access for approximately one year depending on a variety of development targets. The team is using Early Access to improve the game, learn from community feedback, and work to make this the best Starship Troopers experience possible.
Will Starship Troopers: Extermination come to consoles?
Right now the Starship Troopers: Extermination team is focused on the game’s Early Access launch on Steam. While we're aware of the demand for a console release, our current goal is to release on PC first. However, not even the Ministry of Paranormal Warfare knows what the future holds!
What engine is Starship Troopers: Extermination built on?
Offworld is an Unreal-first studio and we are creating Starship Troopers: Extermination on the Unreal Engine 4. We have plans to move to Unreal Engine 5 over the course of development.
Is Starship Troopers: Extermination built from the Starship Troopers mod for Squad?
Starship Troopers: Extermination is not a Squad mod. The mod exists and continues to be developed by members of the Squad community, but ST:E is different from the mod in many ways which will become more obvious as we reveal more about the game. ST:E is a 16-player co-op PvE shooter, whereas Squad is a 50vs50 PvP shooter. ST:E is not Squad in space.
Will there be mod support?
There are no current plans for mod support.
Will there be controller support?
We will have partial controller support in place at the start of Early Access with more complete support as we progress through to launch.
What are the minimal and recommended specs?
Our most up-to-date specs minimum specs are on the game’s Steam page

These are suggested specs for our Early Access period and may change during ongoing development.
Will there be a server browser?
As Starship Troopers: Extermination uses studio-operated servers, there will not be a distributed server browser.
What game modes will be included in Starship Troopers: Extermination?
At the start of Early Access, we will have two game modes: Assault & Secure (AAS) and ARC Slam (available after Rank 5 is reached in a Trooper’s career). Those names may change during development. Additional game modes will come during the Early Access period so stay tuned for more details!
Will there be a single-player campaign?
We do not currently have plans for a single-player campaign. We are first and foremost focused on spending Early Access building out a comprehensive and rewarding multiplayer experience, which is what Offworld is known for!
How many players can participate in a match?
A match features up to 16 players divided into squads of four. These squads can work together to complete objectives or operate independently.
Will there be AI teammates?
Not at Early Access launch. Our current focus is on developing Starship Troopers: Extermination for human teammates.
Is Starship Troopers: Extermination a tactical shooter like Squad?
While both games feature FPS gameplay, Starship Troopers: Extermination is not Squad. Team-based tactics and strategy will help you in the fight against the Bugs, but it is not the focus of the game as it is in Squad.
How many Bugs will be on screen?
We’re aiming for the combat experience to feel as if you’re being swarmed by an intensive rush of Bugs - as if your survival is at stake as you try to outlast the onslaught. This is a fight for the planet, not a walk in the park!
How many types of Bugs will there be?
We will be launching in Early Access with five different Bug types (Drone, Warrior, Gunner, Plasma Grenadier, and Tiger Elite) with more being planned to join the war as the game is developed.
Will Starship Troopers: Extermination include any of the music from the original movie?
Music from other entries in the Starship Troopers franchise will not be included in the game. We love the first movie’s original score and have created an entirely original soundtrack that pays homage to the franchise, specifically the 1997 movie.
How do deployables work? Do you get only a certain amount of charges? Can you pick it up?
Deployables have a certain amount of charges that can be refilled at ammo crates and can be accessed with an assigned hotkey. You can pick up your own deployables.
Do we have artillery call-ins?
Not at Early Access launch. Who knows what is to come!
Are weapons tied to classes?
Yes, some weapons are tied to classes. Hunters and Operators can use the Morita Hawkeye, Bastions have the Morita Mk III SAW, and Operators can use a Grenade Launcher.
Is base building specific to a class?
All classes in Early Access have the ability to build bases.
How long are matches to be expected to be?
While this depends on how quickly Troopers can coordinate to complete objectives, Assault & Secure (AAS) matches last about 20 minutes while ARC Slam matches last about 30 minutes.
Is there a progression system?
Yes! Earn XP based on your performance in matches to unlock weapons, deployables, and perks to become the best Trooper you can be! We will be continuing to add to this over time. Currently, progression caps out at level 20 for each class and rank 5 for player career.
Any plans to add more gibs/gore/dismemberment to Bug/Trooper death?
Yes - this is a big part of Starship Troopers, and we are looking to include it in the future!
Is spectator mode in the works?
No spectator mode is planned at this time.
How do we give feedback?
Please leave your feedback in the Starship Troopers: Extermination Discord !

We’re Going to War!

Today, Offworld Industries, in collaboration with Sony Pictures Consumer Products, are thrilled to announce May 17th as the Early Access launch date for their upcoming title, Starship Troopers: Extermination. The launch will mark an opportunity for players to collaborate closely with the Offworld Industries team through the game’s earliest development stages, as their feedback helps guide what features and mechanics to build upon before the game’s eventual transition into 1.0. Community feedback from the frenetic 16-player action—bumped up from the originally-anticipated 12-player gameplay—will be a crucial component of the evolving creative process, as Offworld Industries works to iterate upon player input and add more content throughout the Early Access period.

The Early Access edition of Starship Troopers: Extermination will be available at $24.99 USD upon release—a special introductory price that will increase as more content is introduced ahead of the 1.0 launch. From day one of Early Access, the title will already boast both strategy and combat-oriented gameplay. Players can construct and reinforce bases of operations while not in heavy combat, creating a safe structure to respawn, regroup and rearm themselves in preparation for Bug-exterminating co-op play. These bases are protected from enemy spawns, and base-building isn’t linked to a specific class or rank, so Deep Space Vanguards of every stripe can utilize these structures.
