Starship Troopers: Extermination News

Casper Van Dien is loving the Starship Troopers renaissance but finds it mind-boggling some still take it at face value: 'My grandfather fought against the Nazis, and it's not a pro-war film—Everybody f***ing dies!'

Starship Troopers: Extermination has been in early access since last year and, buoyed by the success of Sony's similarly themed Helldivers 2, is coming in hot for a full October launch that among other things boasts the return of Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico. Rico is the beating heart of the original movie's ensemble cast, has many of the finest lines, and is kind of the audience's anchor as director Paul Verhoeven blasts off on an excoriating drive-by about social control, war from the space grunt perspective, and man's inhumanity to… well, everything...

Casper Van Dien says Helldivers 2 may be 'a good tribute' but now he's Johnny Rico again, and Starship Troopers fans better 'come in here and help us kill some damn bugs—Yeah!'

Helldivers 2 has been one of 2024's big hits, and found a huge audience ready to spread managed democracy across the galaxy. The game's setting has one inspiration above all others: Paul Verhoeven's film Starship Troopers, loosely based on the Robert Heinlein novel. The game is packed with references and tributes, and sparked some renewed interest in the movie, with even Casper Van Dien (main character Johnny Rico in Starship Troopers) calling it "really quite wonderful."..

The official Starship Troopers co-op shooter has a full release date, Casper Van Dien, and a miraculous-sounding corpse pile-up system: 'No other game has been able to achieve persistent death at the scale we're doing'

In a flurry punch of announcements, rather good co-op bug-blaster Starship Troopers: Extermination has revealed that it's leaving behind early access and hitting its full 1.0 release on October 11, gaining a new singleplayer campaign mode in the transition, and that it's recruited Casper Van Dien—Mr "I'm from Buenos Aires and I say kill 'em all" from the original movie—to feature in it. Oh, and that you'll soon be able to kill enough bugs to literally change the terrain of the game's maps...

Helldivers 2 rival sets Steam 1.0 launch with new single-player mode

There aren't many games that scratch the Helldivers 2 itch right now, apart from that selfsame co-op shooter of course. The chaotic, gruesome, and fascist parody aspects of Arrowhead's smash hit didn't just come out of nowhere though. The Robert A. Heinlein novel, and later 1997 film, are a clear inspiration for the galactic war against bugs - and now the PvE shooter that preceded Helldivers 2, Starship Troopers Extermination, is finally coming to Steam 1.0.
