Payday 3 dev says it can still be saved as player count drops to 150

Cyberpunk 2077. No Man's Sky. Final Fantasy 14. Over the last decade especially, we've seen plenty of big games launch to criticism, trouble, and technical problems, only to recover and gradually become huge successes. Payday 2 was a huge hit, firmly establishing the co-op heist FPS as one of the most unique and beloved multiplayer games on PC. Payday 3, however, is in serious trouble. Starbreeze's sequel has a 'mostly negative' rating on Steam based on user reviews. Similarly, the Payday 3 Steam player count continues to tumble, recently dipping to 150 concurrent heisters and below. In a new statement, Starbreeze says that Payday 3 can make a comeback, and promises to throw the entire weight of the game's development team behind a rescue effort. Are we about to see another historic turnaround?

Payday 3 has fewer than 250 players on Steam, four months after launch

It's just over four months since the Payday 3 Steam launch, but the Starbreeze FPS sequel is seriously struggling to maintain a player base. A variety of technical problems, many of them in relation to Payday 3's always-online requirement, meant the shooter was received coolly at launch - to this day, it still holds a middling 'mixed' rating on Valve's storefront. Now, the Payday 3 Steam player count has dipped below 250. While it's also available on Game Pass, the diminishing turnout for the Payday 2 sequel is a concerning sign, as Starbreeze announces drastic new measures to try and bring Payday 3 up to scratch.

Payday 3 assembles new dev team to make the game actually good

Payday 3 is going through a very rough patch. Arriving in September 2023, the eagerly awaited heist shooter had big expectations to meet. Payday 2 had more or less created an entirely new genre, and cultivated a huge following thanks to its smart, small-scale co-op gameplay and a series of well-loved updates. Payday 3 on the other hand suffered from technical and server issues, delayed patches, and a rapid exodus of its player base, which largely returned to its more reliable predecessor. As it stands, Payday 3 has a 'mostly negative' Steam rating based on recent player feedback. Likewise, its peak Steam player count for the last 24 hours is just 713 - Payday 2's is 33,550. But Starbreeze Studios says it has a plan, and is assembling a new "strike team" composed of series veterans to rescue Payday 3 and make it the game that fans always wanted.
