Architect's Corner #5 - Commoners' Houses

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Greetings Builders! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Welcome to the next part of our "Architect's Corner" series, in which we tell you all about the buildings you will have at your disposal as a ruler of an ancient Greek Polis. Discover interesting tips and tricks, learn how to effectively plan the development of your city, and check out how many useful structures you can raise - all this to the glory of a great ruler, such as yourself! ๐Ÿ‘‘
...and talk to the community and developers about the game!

Thฤ“tesโ€™ Houses

The foundation of the society you will happen to rule are tireless, hardworking and, telling the truth as it is, rather simple people. In Ancient Greece, they were called Thฤ“tes - the lowest class of free men in the whole state, consisting mostly of poor peasants, small craftsmen, and landless hired workers โš’๏ธ The scope of their activities is therefore extremely wide and essential for the survival of your city. You can meet Thฤ“tes in such places as farms, lumber mills, clay pits, olive groves, woodcutter's houses, fisherman's huts, hunting lodges, or varied kinds of minor workshops. Their hands may be blistered, and their necks sunburned, however, as long as you take good care of their needs, they will sure prove to be loyal, well-performing subjects.

Speaking of Thฤ“tesโ€™s needs... one of the most important necessities of mankind is to have shelter and a roof over their heads. The bigger, more comfortable, and well-stocked, the better! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Thฤ“tes may not be a very demanding social layer, but still craves entertainment and access to a variety of goods. Anyhow, let's get back to the housing. As you can see in the illustration below, the Thฤ“tes' houses cannot be called very spacious and magnificent. The bodies of this type of buildings are rather simple and austere, they usually consist of a small number of rooms, and are quite low (two-story houses are in this case fairly rare). The roofs are most often covered with whitewashed stones or simple red tiles. Although such a house does not seem particularly cozy and roomy, it fulfills its function perfectly - it provides safety and a place to live for numerous Thฤ“tes families. In the end, not everyone can live a comfortable, luxurious life of a ruler, right? ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ˜

The construction of such simple houses does not require a lot of raw materials and work, so your builders will be able to build plenty of them in a short period of time. Thฤ“tesโ€™ houses prove to be a great solution, whenever your city is experiencing a demographic surplus and needs to host numerous newcomers from all over Greece. Of course, with time, accumulated wealth, and access to demanded goods, simple houses can advance to something more ๐Ÿ’ฐ which leads us to...
Zeugitaisโ€™ Houses

Zeugitai are wealthy enough to own a team of oxen... or to serve in famous hoplites formation. We are sure you get the idea - this social layer is nothing else but the middle class of your population. Let's start with the fact, that Zeugitai are somewhat more qualified and demanding employees than the Thฤ“tes described above. They spend their working day in places such as watermills, more demanding farms like wheat farm, cattle farm, and flax plantation, or in different types of mines placed around your city. Make no mistake - they still know how to work hard, but their job requires a bit more skill and experience โ›๏ธ As the goods and resources they produce are often quite valuable, they can afford a fairly comfortable standard of living. Take their homes as an example...

Zeugitaiโ€™s Houses are definitely more spacious and complex than cramped Thฤ“tesโ€™ Houses - that's for sure! Middle class houses are covered with smooth, red tiles, they often have two floors, several rooms, and even a small, cozy porch. Zeugitai families can enjoy more freedom and have some extra space to gather the goods they need in their everyday life ๐Ÿšช Naturally, building such a home is a bit more expensive and requires more work, however it is still a rather simple structure. When your Polis develops from a provincial town to a well-known, prosperous city, vacant space will be quickly filled with Zeugitais' houses... and the service buildings they crave for.

If you want Zeugitai to feel comfortable in your city, you need to provide them with the access not only to a variety of goods, but also to some class-fitting services. This social group loves to spend their free time in the Inn - a place where the latest news, rumors, and matters important to the average citizen are discussed... not to mention the delicious beverages served there ๐Ÿฅƒ In addition, it would be a wise decision to build the Ares Square. Thanks to this place, your dear Zeugitai will not only stay in good shape and practice their fighting skills, but also provide themselves with a great deal of entertainment! โš”๏ธ

In the following parts of the series, we will return with descriptions of many other cool structures that will ensure the safety, well-being, and development of your city. We hope that the buildings presented today will find their place among the streets of your Polis, and that they will contribute to the growth of your magnificent kingdom! ๐Ÿ˜€ As always - thank you and stay tuned!

The Ruler's Manual #5 - Resources

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Greetings, mighty Builders! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Any ruler who wants to go down in history ๐Ÿ“š should get acquainted with the "Ruler's Manual" series! Why - you ask? Well, in the following entries we tell you about how to make your Polis wealthy, safe, and as prosperous as possible. And believe us, it's not as easy as it may seem!

...and talk to the community and developers about the game!
Okay, let's get to the point, shall we? Today's topic is of crucial importance to the well-being and even the very foundation of your city.

Raw resources - as we are going to talk about them - are not only the building blocks of your Polis, but also food for its inhabitants, crafting materials for its artisans, tradable goods for its merchants, and much, much more! Before you start collecting them, however, you must first get to know them... ๐Ÿ”
Edible resources

Without them, your Polis would be a ghost town. Constant access to food is something that every ruler must take care of ๐Ÿ— Edible resources include those coming from your farms, such as Olives, Grapes, and Wheat, which after proper preparation can find their place on the tables of your loyal citizens. However, this is not their only use! Example? Sure! Olives can be turned into medicines, perfumes, and bakery ingredients, Grapes are the basis of wine production, and Wheat, apart from the bread and tiganites bakery, is used in the brewery, stable, or goat and cattle farms. Quite useful, aren't they?

Other resources in this category are materials of animal origin. These include Poseidon's gift in the form of fish and milk that can be later processed into tasty, coveted cheese ๐Ÿฅ› This is a good moment to mention, that the varied diet (and that means providing yourself with several different sources of raw edible resources) makes your subjects happier and more cooperative - keep that in mind while planning your production network! ๐Ÿค”
Building resources

When your subjects' bellies are full, you can take care of giving them a roof over their heads. To do this, you will need... (surprise, surprise) raw resources! Among the most important of them, we can name Wood and Stone. ๐ŸŒณ On the one hand, you will need a lot of them - and we mean - a lot. On the other, they are quite easy to collect and process. All around your city, you will find lush green forests as well as stone fields full of materials just waiting to gather them. To do that, you will need the Quarry, Woodcutterโ€™s house โ›๏ธ and a bunch of strong workers!

With access to these building materials, your builders will be able to start their work. Ensure you have sufficient supply of Wood, Stone, and (later on) Marble, because they can be used in the production of many, many other goods. When the axes and pickaxes finally go into motion, your city will have everything it needs to grow and flourish! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ
Mineral resources

It's time for a bit more sophisticated materials that can be used to make luxury goods such as jewelry, weapons, tools, and many others โš’๏ธ In order to get them, you'll have to dig them out of the ground! Clay, Tin, Copper, Silver, and Gold are valuable resources that can be used in dozens of different ways... A wise ruler will see them as a valuable commodity for trade or a way to please the richer part of city dwellers. We believe you will find several other uses for them as well!

Without raw mineral resources, your Polis will not reach a higher level of development and will remain just a small, provincial city. And this is not our goal, is it? Be sure, to carefully browse your territory and find suitable places to build your mines and other gathering stations ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Sometimes different kinds of resources emerge from the ground, and you can always read it as a sign, that there is something valuable down there! These could be silver, copper, tin, or even gold deposits, and clay or marble fields. Try to get your hands on them as early as possible because they always come in handy at some point in your reign - and as we know, it's better to be prepared than sorry!

In the following parts of the series, we will return to you with descriptions of many other important mechanics and tips that will help you become the greatest ruler of all time! As always - stay tuned.
