Randy Pitchford shows he's capable of not being an idiot about Borderlands 4 prices, raising questions about previous insistence on being an idiot

Borderlands boss Randy Pitchford submitted an-all timer entry into the pantheon of neoliberal thirst tweets earlier this week, telling a player concerned about a potential $80 asking price for Borderlands 4 that "if you're a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen", before telling an anecdote about how, when he were a lad, he used to lick the fleas from unwashed goats for quarters to play Bubble Bobble, or something.

This went down about as well as you'd expect, prompting Pitchford to yesterday follow-up with a clip of him on a panel talking about a potential price increase in, wait for it, much more sober and considered terms. That rage-inducing Borderlands 4 price tweet hasn't stopped Randy Pitchford posting, as he declares an indie game is "cheaper than a point of meth"

Yep, this is a thing the Gearbox exec has tweeted. He's posted that indie shooter Mycopunk is "cheaper than a point of meth" and "probably has fewer side effects, too", in response to publisher Devolver Digital making a joke about Borderlands 4 potentially costing $80.

I think it might be time to stop letting Gearbox head Randy Pitchford tweet about his own games. Just last month, he accidentally shared the fact that Borderlands 4 was getting an earlier than expected release date ahead of an official announcement; he put that one down to time zones. This time his overly eager attitude towards posting hasn't revealed any information about Borderlands 4 he wasn't meant to, but it is something that could maybe, just potentially, be viewed as ever-so-slightly out of touch.

Borderlands 4 Might Cost $80, CEO Pitchford says “Real Fans” Would Buy It Anyway

Fans have expressed concern over a potential $80 price tag for Borderlands 4, and Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford says “real fans” would buy it regardless.

Earlier in the year, the gaming market committed to its first $80 launch title with the Nintendo Switch 2’s Mario Kart World. As more companies get on board with the potential pricing hike (like Microsoft and Xbox), fans have expressed concern that Gearbox’s next title in the Borderlands franchise, Borderlands 4, will follow suit and also increase the game’s base price to $80. The latest Borderlands 4 trailer can be seen below.

Aside from Microsoft and Mario Kart World, so far other companies like 2K have not committed to the price increase outwardly. Notoriously outspoken Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, has responded to one fan today in regards to the potential price increase. A fan on X (formerly Twitter) responded to Randy Pitchford’s post promoting the announcement that Borderlands 4... Read more
