Happy New Year! - Dev Log 39

Hey everyone - Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2022, in today's developer log we'll take a look at some of the things coming soon and stuff that we'll be covering in more detail in dev logs over the next few weeks!

We hope everyone has had a great time over the Christmas period, our whole team is now back recharged, and working hard to make PowerWash Simulator even better in '22!

Without further ado, onto the first dev log of the year.
CO-OP Changes
We've been listening closely to all of your feedback on the multiplayer beta. One of the most common suggestions is to have some reward for the 2nd player in career mode. We hear you and are looking into it!

This topic is likely going to have a full dev log devoted to it soon!

There are also some priority fixes we want to make to multiplayer but we'll keep everyone updated closer to patch 0.8.

Thanks for all of your feedback and reports so far!
No More Slippy Ladders
We're looking to add a feature where you don't slip off the sides of a ladder. This anti-slip has been one of the highest community requests and we can't wait to add it into the game!

We'll likely take a deeper dive into the work on this in a future log too!
Gnomes
Gnomes will be making a return and to settle some players' madness they will also be added to maps where there wasn't a gnome already. The hunt to find them all will be on!

Also, the feature that originally broke the gnomes leading to their removal will also be added. That is being able to pick up the gnomes and carry them around. We'll show this off in a future post, but this will help if the gnomes get stuck in front of a dirty surface blocking cleaning.
Mini Golf Course Dev Diary
As the Mini Golf Course job is already announced, we don't have to worry about spoiling it! (It was suggested and voted to be created by the community!)

We want to start a series showing the development process from rough to ready for this and maybe some of the other community maps! Expect more on this in the future!

For now here's a very early (from over a month ago) sketch the designer Dave sent to the artist Laura suggesting the creation of a cool dragon statue! What will it look like? Will it make it into the game? Keep an eye out for when we drop these dev diaries to get answers!
Map teasers
There are several more maps coming in 0.8 and some of our most ambitious yet. It is very hard not to spoil them all right now but we're holding back on big teasers until a bit later. That being said, here's something to speculate and mull over before we start to turn up the teasing heat!

Can you tile what this is?

There's a lot here but also a little. We can't wait to dig deeper in upcoming dev logs and to be able to start teasing the 0.8 jobs in a few logs too! For now, thanks for reading and we'll see you next week for log #40!

Happy Holidays! - Dev Log 38

Hey everyone,

In this week's dev log we extend an extra clean helping of season's greetings to you all and give some updates on us over the holiday period!

Last week we looked into the past at how far PowerWash Simulator had come!

If you want to time travel, read dev log 37 here: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1290000/view/3148576538715280569

Happy Holidays!

Here's an early Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the whole development team here at FuturLab.

We'd like to take a moment to say a big thank you to everyone for making 2021 such an incredible year for us.

Thanks first for your reviews, we're now the 7th top-rated Steam game of 2021 and 66th of all time according to SteamDB! It's truly an honor and we're constantly blown away by everyone's reaction to the game we've put so much passion into.

Also, thanks for all of your feedback that's helped us shape and make PWS better over the past few patches. We definitely aren't done yet and have lots more planned leading up to 1.0.
See You in 2022
The team is now off for the holiday period until the new year!

Don't worry, we've got lots of content planned in 2022, and content patch 0.8 isn't too far away. We can't wait to let the teasers flow and see everyone's new speculations! We'll also be working hard on correcting known issues and ironing things out for that patch.

Thanks for reading this log, the next one will be on the 7th of January where we'll hopefully have some spicy spoilers for content update 0.8. Have an amazing holiday period and we'll see all of you in 2022!

Now and Then - Dev Log 37

Hey everyone,

Update 0.7 dropped last week with our multiplayer beta! This week, instead of looking into the future and 0.8, we'll be taking a peek at the past!

If you do want to learn more about 0.7, read here: https://steamcommunity.com/games/1290000/announcements/detail/3148575179713052844

Anyway, let's go further backward with this week's developer log!

Then and Now
The Beginning
Enjoy this clip of one of the earliest tests and experimenting with the game idea back in July 2019:

I think we can all agree the game has come a LONG way since then! The developer who had made this clip can't even remember making this prototype which says how old and alien it is now!

Here's a look at early wetness VFX which reflections were amped way up and the power washer spray wasn't even properly implemented:

Also notice that the BBQ isn't down near the grass!
Multiplayer Edition
Here's a look at one of the first breakthrough moments with the multiplayer where we were excited to get washing working between host and client! Also, this GIF became a bit of a meme with our community showing off the classic Unity bean!

Following this, we had some memes made by the community like this one:

But the player model has come a long way since then!

It next came to prototype the suit and its animations, here's a WIP first walk captured by the dev team!

Really walking on eggshells there.

We further developed the suits and colors.

Here are some early very bright suits we decided to tone down significantly.

Radioactive green... who knows maybe it will make a return in the future...

There's still work to do on bugs and quirks but here's one of our meme-worthy favorites during development:

To present-day cleaning suit all squeaky clean:

Anyway, those were a few glimpses into powerwash past, but back to looking forward! We'll see you next week for our last dev log before the holiday break! Have a great weekend all!

Powerwash Simulator has added online co-op multiplayer

The breakout novelty simulator this year for me is Powerwash Simulator, a game about methodically moving your mouse over the surface of objects to blast away grime and rust with a murderously strong stream of water. It's not a chaotic system like Viscera Cleanup Detail, it's just a game where you slowly make something dirty all sparkling clean. Very chill. Now you can unwind with your pals and clean cars, toilets, fairground rides, and the rest together, thanks to the online co-op added in a recent update.

Multiplayer Beta Now Available in Content Update 0.7!

Welcome everyone to Update 0.7!

We're serving a clean helping of two new career mode jobs, field of view options, and the much-anticipated launch of the professional class of power washer. Though that's not all, we’ve also launched an early beta of two multiplayer modes!

You and a friend can clean together in Career co-op, while up to six friends can tackle any job that you’ve unlocked in Free Play. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this multiplayer beta, so come chat to us on Discord and share your experience. We’ll be keeping a close eye on any issues you encounter and will be ending the year doing our best to make sure your experience is a positive one.

This is just the first rollout of multiplayer during Early Access, with features such as text chat, voice chat, matchmaking, and a PvP mode still to come, not to mention anything that YOU think we’ve missed. Please bear with us while we fix up the known remaining issues, help you all with any new ones you find, and get the remaining features in place. Oh and don’t worry if multiplayer is not your jam. No content is locked off from solo players and the new jobs and equipment in this update are for everyone.

New Content

New jobs: Ferris Wheel and Monster Truck.

New Washer: Prime Vista PRO

New cosmetics: Colours for the model, blue gloves and Jungle themed Urban X washer skin

New challenges: Motorbike & Sidecar - Time & Water

New option: FOV slider

The FOV slider is something we have been wanting to add for a long time to help reduce the chance of motion sickness and as a general quality of life improvement. The implementation wasn't as simple as it may seem, with a coder having to be dedicated to it to make sure that it didn't break the washing and was as seamless as possible.

If you do struggle with motion sickness we suggest putting the FOV as high as possible and also enabling the always-on crosshair. We hope this helps!

New mode: Career co-op, 2 players max.

This game mode is comprised of the Host and an assistant. Only the Host will earn cash and make progress through the career. Assistants are limited to the use of the same equipment the Host has access to, but can’t use soap.

To join a player you must be friends on Steam then simply go to career mode, start a job, return to the tablet (the game menu), enable the hosting in the top left corner.

The friend can then connect from the join tab to the top right in the career mode section of the menu.

New Mode: Free Play co-op, 6 players max.

Host a game in Free Play mode and you can invite up to 5 friends to join you in washing any jobs you have completed in Career mode. You can use any equipment you have unlocked.

To set this game up, follow the same steps above as the career mode but from within the Free Play section!
Known Issues and Workarounds
This is in a Beta state and we want as much feedback and community input as we can get so please do share. Currently, there are also a few known bugs that you should know about before diving in:

Percentage Clean Syncing
Appearance and progress of partially washed areas may not always be identical between the host and the client. If the job appears to be complete to some clients but isn't we'd suggest the host goes on the dirt find trusting their info on the details menu. The Host is the source of truth; if you find yourselves in a debate over whether or not something is clean, trust the Host.

Invisible Host
If the host terminates a session, then re-enables it without leaving the job, they will be invisible to any clients that join. We've worked hard on making a clean player model, so we'd strongly suggest avoiding this one unless you want to play a stealth-clean minigame. :)

Big Maps Performance
Some performance issues on larger levels for the Host when playing with 6-players. This will vary in severity depending on your rig. We’re working hard on improving this as it isn't where we would like it to be.

Multiple Same Ladder Pickup

If the Host and a Client simultaneously pick up a ladder and the Client attempts to place it, the Host’s interactions will break and you’ll need to relaunch the session. Same with multi-ladder scenes where two players attempt to simultaneously place a ladder in the same spot. We wouldn't suggest trying to recreate the classic Lady and the Tramp spaghetti scene with ladders.

Rapid Joining/Leaving Repeatedly
Rapidly joining, washing, leaving & rejoining a game will cause that Client to be out of synch with the Host’s cleaning progress. There is no berry to cure confusion in PWS!

Long load In-Progress Free Play
If several players are washing a larger job and a new client attempts to join it can take a very long time or even cause a time out. We'll be working on improving this.

Ladder Trapping
Careless use of ladders may cause other players to become trapped between them and a wall or some other object. Doing this will require the affected player to leave and re-join or the host should restart the session. This is not a suggestion to troll your friends, we see the look in your eye!

Timeout When Host Changes Jobs
When you’re hosting and a client tries to join you, if you attempt to change jobs or quit, then they’ll time out. Please wait until your friend has joined before moving on to another level.

Incorrect Cosmetics
Hosts may need to open and close the tablet to update their appearance if a client has joined the game. PowerWash blue is the new black?

Timelapse Long Load
The timelapse is shared from the host to the clients at the end of a job. It can be quite a lengthy process to download it even with fast connections which we’re investigating. It should be OK for the Host to move on to the next job if you don’t want to wait for it.

Quitting Freeze
Quitting the app with a session in progress may cause a frozen loading screen. It's best to end/leave any multiplayer session before you quit.

Turbo Nozzle
Having a turbo nozzle equipped looks a little… unusual. Let us know what you think!

Scaffolding Abyss Yeet
You can still boop yourself out of bounds using the scaffolding. I hope that’s the last time we write that. We’ve added some kill boxes to catch and respawn you, but depending on the velocity we just discovered that you may bypass them. We weren't factoring in that you enter velocities similar to a certain blue hedgehog

None Host Players Unable To Use Inventory

To fix it the none host player needs to resume a single player career job, equip the soap nozzle and then unequip the cleaner (equipping the no cleaner option) and then joining the hosts game again. This needs to be repeated for each power washer owned.

(What triggers the issue is having a cleaner equipped, so if a player during a career mode equips a soap nozzle and a cleaner even if they change nozzle and join a co-op job they still are unable to access the inventory. This bug can't be fixed by exiting and restarting the game nor changing mode.)

Where Have the Gnomes Gone?

The gnomes have taken off to help out at Santa's workshop with a big backlog of presents this year... Just kidding! We'll be honest and say that gnomes broke multiplayer at the last second and have made a temporary leave of absence.

We were working on a feature to be able to pick up gnomes and move them to combat the issue where they could get stuck up against cleanable objects making them impossible to clean. Though what happened was there were unexpected issues with equipment and other things locking you in various scenarios.

The gnomes are a big part of the game and WILL BE BACK! Don't anyone panic!

We hope everyone has an amazing time with our multiplayer beta. We apologize for any issues people run into but we hope to improve the mode throughout Early Access and appreciate all of your feedback.
