Night Spasm News

Updates on Night Spasm going free to play.

Hello all you spicey gamers, Gideon here, the Director of Night Spasm and the founder of FanFaction!

Yesterday, we announced that Night Spasm will be going free to play very soon! We now have more details thanks to the help and advice of Steam's help center! Here are the main details you need to know:

For those who already bought the game...

According to Steam, it isn't possible to turn any purchases of Night Spasm into codes for free DLC, so this process will have to be done manually. If you've bought Night Spasm before it became free, message my Twitter or Instagram with a picture of your proof of purchase. KEEP THE RECEIPT PRIVATE, ONLY SHARE WITH CERTIFIED FANFACTION STAFF! Don't @ your receipt, send it privately.

If you have an unredeemed code, simply redeem it even if the game is free. Then provide the proof of purchase email as usual.

For all those who owned the game before it was free, we'll keep your username on a whitelist. Anyone on this list will get one free released DLC of their choice. Provide your preferred username and social media platform and any other information you believe is necessary for recognition. The code of conduct for our company ensures that we won't harbor information. For more details on that just ask for now.

Regarding Chapter 2 pre-purchases...

Since Night Spasm's community is very small, we don't qualify for DLC pre-purchases, which is completely reasonable. Once Night Spasm kicks off a little better, we can set up the pre-purchase for Chapter 2, just a little later than we anticipated.

Night Spasm is planned to go free on March 25th!

Only three days from now! As of right now, there isn't any reason it should be delayed, so set your clocks and calendars to March 25th cause it's going to be hype! Over 480 players have already wishlisted Night Spasm for the big day! Don't miss out!

On the same day, the Night Spasm Discord server should be up and running! I'll be it, a simplified version to start most likely, but a server certainly worth checking out! It will have announcements, meme pages, chat rooms, and tons of events and competitions!

So get ready for March 25th, you won't want to miss it!

Night Spasm is going free to play!

Hello all you spicey gamers, Gideon here, the Director of Night Spasm and the founder of FanFaction!

It's true, you read it right! Night Spasm is going FREE TO PLAY!

Why are we doing this? It's simple, really! As the FanFaction team continues to grow, we've begun working on some new projects... shooters, platformers, puzzle games, and more! Night Spasm served as our starting legacy, our first representation of what our team can do. The game has been out for almost two years now, and we've grown a small and loyal fanbase on our social media.

Since we've got other games coming up, we've decided to give our dedicated fans and any new fans a wonderful gift: a 30-hour RPG game ANYONE can play for FREE! What better way for a game to stand out than being free to play, right? And why not try a game if you've only got to GAIN from it! It's time every gamer of all ages and preferences got a chance to play something new and original everyone can love!

SO HERE'S THE DEALIO...

In the next month or so, Night Spasm will be free to download and play. All the content currently accessible can be played from beginning to end, which is all of Chapter 1. Chapter 1 features everything up to Region A1, the biggest area on the map. Anything that affects Region A1, such as new kingdoms and secret boss battles, will be available immediately when released to the public.

Night Spasm Chapter 1 will serve as the base game. All future chapters, like the upcoming Chapter 2, will come in the form of DLC, an expansion to the game of sorts. Our plan is to have all the future chapters as paid DLC, either as individual small purchases for each chapter or one big purchase for the full game. Additionally, we have a couple of other DLCs planned, such as new side stories, permanent character and base upgrades, and bundles of DLC-exclusive items... maybe a few crossovers as well...

"What if I previously paid for the game before it became free?"

Fear not, we know how that feels. Depending on what Steam is capable of doing, we would like to have all previous purchases serve as pre-purchases for Chapter 2, no matter what cost you bought it at. If that is not a possibility within Steam, as long as you have proof of purchase of the game, like the online receipt, we could manually send you a code.

Another thing to know: all unredeemed Steam codes for Night Spasm should become pre-purchase codes for Chapter 2 once the game has become free. Redeeming them now versus later shouldn't make a difference.

The community is growing, and so are we.

Catering to our fanbase is a major priority. Once Night Spasm goes free, we will set up a Night Spasm Discord server, a business email, and a FanFaction website! The Discord server will serve as the main platform for announcements, bug reports, and memes! We'll host many contests and be sure to keep everyone updated!

As for other social media, the FanFaction Instagram account will be our main business account, and any Night Spasm-related videos will still be uploaded to the FanFaction YouTube channel.

We'd love to hear your feedback!

Let us know what you think. We will get these projects done ASAP. Hopefully Steam will let us apply all of these methods. Do expect a large update before the price change!

Night Spasm Ver. 1.0.7.5 release!

Ver. 1.0.7.5

Wow, time flies when you're having stressful amounts of work piling on you- I MEAN having fun! Have we really not released a Night Spasm since November?!?!

For the past 4 months, we've been working on CHAPTER 2 of Night Spasm! We know exactly what's up next for the Night Spasm story, and boy is it good (I heard that maybe a SPECIAL GUEST might be helping us develop Chapter 2? Who could this be???)! Even though this update is fairly small, it took so long because we've been preparing a LOT of content we're not quite ready to release. More information on that in a Devlog coming out today!

What you're REALLY here for is an update so beautiful Piccaso has been reeeeal quiet since this dropped (probably because he's dead). Introducing Night Spasm version 1.0.7.5! Really catchy isn't it? It's like a computer wrote it for us!

Here are the patch notes!

-Completely shortened the tutorial and introduction. The tutorial should be much more entertaining and take up far less time! Additionally, we’ve shorted a lot of other important dialog and made various moments optional to read!

-Changed the textbox color to black, making text easier to read while also serving as a “night mode” feature.

-Changed the text and menu font to Bahnschrift.

-Changed the battle text font to Arial.

-Increased the price of all items in shops by about 10 to 30 ckoins.

-Made the Vinnia Follow boss fight much more difficult and implemented some new moments.

-Made two new boss themes for Vinnia Follow and the Revenger King/Ravlonian King. Their exciting new themes should make their battles much more intense!

-The stun effect of all skills, equipment, and items available to the player will now inflict sleep/freeze instead. Having access to the stun infliction at any point caused boss fights to be way too easy. The equipment will remain unchanged for old save files.

-Enemy counter attacks now include their BD in the damage formula.

-Buffed all non-food healing items and all offensive items.

We realized we may have made some tiny lil' mistakes back then. "We all do!" (-Kevin McKalister). With this update, the visuals should be much more pleasing to look at, mostly the dialog. And speaking of the dialog, we REALLY forced a lot of storytelling at the start of the game. That's been taken care of now, as most of the dialog in 90% of the game is now optional! We'll even keep compressing the dialog as Chapter 2 gets developed. Who says a picture is worth 1000 words? 100 words could ALSO equal 1000 words!

Also really quickly, we'd like to remind everyone that we are searching for music makers. Whether you can make great bangers, dramatic bridges, or comedically-crappy masterpieces, we need you! Contact us either through Instagram or Twitter, links down below!

And remember, if there are any changes or improvements you think we should make, tell us via social media! Thank you all for playing and keep your controllers busy!

Team Seas total

We never posted the results since it was so small, but we ended up only making one sale through the event, but that's still $100 towards Team Seas! That's 100 pounds of trash out of the ocean!

We had originally thought we earned more, but the other purchases were actually Steam key activations, which only could have come from curators as we've never sold any Steam keys. Maybe one day we will try this again in the future. Thanks for the support, even if it was only one person ❤.

Dev Log #1 | How our video games teach players life lessons and why it matters.

Hello, all you spicey gamers, Gideon here, the Director of Night Spasm and the founder of FanFaction.

My crew and I always have a lot to say, so we'd figured it would be worthwhile to actually say the things roaming in our head. With this new Dev Log plan, we can all freely announce statements from behind the scenes. We're very excited to discuss our future plans, interesting moments in the workplace, and our viewpoints on various topics of the gaming and entertainment industry.

I'd like to kick this first Dev Log off with a summary of recent events (and maybe a bottle of Sprite):

The FanFaction team has been branching out to new vistas; our music designers are learning graphic designing skills, our graphic designers are pursuing story writing, and the rest of us have been experimenting with Unity. One of our business partners, Kellen "Endevours", has been assisting our team with the ins and outs of Unreal Engine 4 and also managing our Copywrite claims (thanks again Kellen!).

Throughout Night Spasm's several updates, we've been planning ahead. We have so many other video game ideas that are getting closer and closer to coming into effect. Some of these ideas include a Mario Party-inspired RPG game, a fast-paced rogue-like with an alien protagonist, and some video game renditions of unusual or uncommon sports!

Additionally, we've been planning out the future of the Night Spasm series. We've come to the conclusion of how Night Spasm will end and how other Night Spasm games will come into play. We've taken a lot of inspiration from games deemed similar to Night Spasm, such as Undertale, Breath of the Wild, Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, and even Animal Crossing. Most of the video games we've played over our lives have had some influence on Night Spasm's story, gameplay, and most of all its music. Did you know that MOG's personality was somewhat inspired by Master Chief's personality from the game Halo?

And it's not just other games that influence our games; a lot of movies and personal experiences were the sources of some important Night Spasm moments. For example, when I was trying to design Inevit's back story and role within Night Spasm, I began to seek inspiration from the movies my family and I would watch on Friday nights. I wanted to design a villain players could have empathy for, and since Night Spasm is all about freedom of choice, I had to make Inevit someone worth accepting over the heroic characters.

I immediately thought of Thanos from The Avengers, as Inevit and Thanos share similar goals in their stories. However, it wasn't until I watched Episode VII of Star Wars that I realized my villain was similar to Kylo Ren. As Kylo Ren is a villain most viewers tend to feel bad for, I began watching the rest of the Star Wars sequels with the idea in mind that maybe Kylo Ren is actually the good guy. And thus, I began observing other villains in movies, and I began to realize that every bad guy has a redeeming quality in them. I basically designed Inevit to be ambitious yet objective, so much so that he can appear either evil or an inspiration.

This is the kind of thinking my crew and I support as we design our games. Every little detail in our games has a meaning behind it, maybe a joke or the answer to a question that comes later on. Sometimes it can take over 10 minutes to fill a single box of dialogue; we take every perspective into consideration and find a way to either change, destroy, or improve the player's philosophy on something. Psychology is what makes our games special.

As we begin to design and develop more video game projects, we think critically about everything. Our games are made to tell the player what kind of person they really are. Video games have the power to change people's life, positively and negatively. With Night Spasm's adaptable "freedom of choice" mindset, it's easy to find moments in the game that apply to your life. Plus, the achievements and consequences in Night Spasm come from the morals and presuppositions of the player, meaning every significant change in Night Spasm happens because of how good or bad of a person you really are.

This is just Night Spasm though. I, personally, believe everything should have a deeper meaning behind it, but that doesn't mean it has to be dark or impactful. Sometimes games serve as activities you can play with your friends. Sometimes games are meant to make you laugh. But I think we can all agree that video games have one aspect in common: inspiration. Whether the inspiration is intended or not in a game, a game will always influence someone's life. And that's what we at FanFaction are here to do.

That is all I have to say for this Dev Log. In summary, we are working hard on other games along with Night Spasm. We hope we can create interactive and life-changing games for you to play!

Please consider following the Night Spasm Steam Community page and our other forms of social media. Your feedback and support are greatly appreciated. See you on the next Dev Log and keep those controllers busy!
