The Stone of Madness News

The Blasphemous dev's new Goya-fuelled stealth tactics monastery sim is basically Umberto Eco's The Great Escape

Earlier today, old man James wagged a finger at us all sternly for not writing about Atomfall before. My turn to puff out my cheeks and look not angry, just disappointed: why haven't we covered The Stone Of Madness prior to the below Gamescom 2024 story trailer? I mean, it's only a real-time tactical stealth game set in a cursed 18th century Jesuit monastery, developed by the people behind gorgeously gross metroidvania Blasphemous. It's only got isometric art inspired by Goya and a sanity/trauma system redolent of Darkest Dungeon. Sounds like an automatic RPS write-up to me.

The Stone of Madness is a huge project for a small team like ours, and it has many interesting topics to deal with. Through a series of posts, we will gradually reveal information about the game. Below is an overview of what you can find.

A MONASTERY HIDDEN IN THE MOUNTAIN
The Stone of Madness is essentially a game of tactical strategy in isometric perspective. We are in the 18th century, but some remote and remote areas of Spain are still dominated by superstition and old beliefs. As a player, you will have to get the 5 protagonists to escape from a huge monastery.
However, what is so original about this? In our game you will not have to go through a linear story. When you start a game, you can choose from multiple stories available. Each story has its own parameters, characters and special objectives, so that every time you start one, you will face a different combination of rooms, characters, puzzles and different challenges!
You must be very careful, as your actions are permanent during the game, and this can affect both your characters and the story... you could end up with a not so very happy ending.
Our desire is that the main section of the game is the exploration. We are hoping that players will discover each of the secrets we have hidden in their intricate rooms.

That's all for today! In the following posts, we will investigate more in the different mechanics that make The Stone of Madness a fresh experience within the strategy games, and we will introduce you more thoroughly to its 5 main characters.
Don't forget to add the game to your Wishlist!
