Underwater side-scroller Silt could learn a lot from Rain World

There are a few moments from Playdead’s Inside that will live rent-free in my head forever, but my favourite involves a submarine. After you steal the underwater vessel from some unwitting researchers, you crash through a barricade, revealing an entire sunken realm of sky rises, office blocks, and yes, a creepy water troll that tries to drown you and I still shudder to think of. But it did get me thinking about the potential of setting a gloomy side-scroller underwater. Enter Silt...

Silt review: there are plenty of fish in the sea but they're all trying to kill you

Has anyone coined the term Limbolike yet? 2D side-scrolling platformers that are a bit Tim Burton-y, and possibly in monochrome. Y'know the ones? Silt is a Limbolike, only it's Limbo under the sea. Other free-wheeling associations I have made include Minute Of Islands and, most weirdly, Gormenghast. 5 Tips for Surviving SILT, Out Tomorrow!

We’re really excited to finally say that SILT is diving onto Steam tomorrow, and we can’t wait for you to experience the underwater void. To help you as you begin your journey into the harrowing world of SILT, here’s a few hints on how to safely proceed through the abyss.
Stay in the light - if you can...
Darkness surrounds you in SILT, so you never know what’s waiting for you up ahead. Keep your torch switched on and use the glow of the organisms around you to keep an eye on what’s lurking in the waters...
Use the environment to your advantage
While it’s a good to assume the worst of the living things that occupy the waters, some might be able to lend a helping hand. For example, some plants you can use to solve puzzles, and a variety of critters can be possessed. See what you can interact with, but always have an escape route planned…
Expect the unexpected
SILT is full of surprises, and not everything is as it seems. This ocean is like no other, so be prepared for some strange encounters.
Get to know the creatures
Different creatures have different abilities, and these will help you progress throughout the game. Some friendlier than others, these marine menaces can get you out of some tricky situations.
Approach Goliaths with caution
This hint is probably self-explanatory. If you see giant jaws, it’s best to keep your distance.

SILT is launching tomorrow, so grab your diving suit and get ready to explore the waters! To keep up to date with the latest SILT news, you can follow us on Twitter @SiltGame, TikTok @Silt_Game, or Instagram @spiralcircusgames.

Silt is Limbo for people who need the extra terror of the deep sea, and arrives next month

Limbo's an all-timer when it comes to brutal, unnerving monochrome platformers. But Limbo's almost 12 years old, it's about time someone came to not only knock it off its pedestal, but sink it into the murky, oppressive depths of the scariest place on Earth: the ocean...
