The Scar Essence Mine | September 27th

This week’s update takes us to the depths of the Scar Essence Mine!

The Scar Essence Mine
Our old friend Aubury has had some bad news this week – it seems that there’s a new source of Runes in town!

The upkeep of high-level items like the Scythe of Vitur and the Sanguinesti Staff can be a real hassle – especially when you’re about to set off for a nice PvM session! Many an aspiring boss slayer has been forced into ShopScape – the practice of hopping worlds, searching for a store where the coveted goods are in stock – and in general, we want that to stop as much as you do. So, in line with that policy, today’s update introduces a more engaging way to grab the Runes you need!

The Scar Essence mine integrates with Runecraft to let players craft the game’s most useful Runes in a more exciting way – and the best part is, it won’t mess up the economy!

Shall we find out more?

Requirements

To get started in the Scar Essence Mine, you'll need to meet the following requirements:
  • Partial completion of Desert Treasure II, to the point of unlocking the Abyssal Scar.
    • Defeating any of the Desert Treasure II bosses is not required – the Scar is accessible just after the beginning of the quest.
  • The requisite Runecraft level for the Runes you plan to craft.
  • Level 66 Mining – don’t forget your Pickaxe!
The Abyssal Extractor

The Abyssal Extractor, known to its friends as Ventriculus, can be found in the Abyssal Scar. It has two functions: creating Pure Essence and creating Extracts – and thanks to an enterprising member of the ZMI, anyone can now take advantage of this magnificent… thing. We thought it best not to ask too many questions.

To make it work, you’ll need to feed it Tainted Essence. Tainted Essence is a lot like Pure Essence, with the notable difference that the abyssal energies of the Scar have warped it beyond all recognition. Instead of a lump of cool, malleable rock, it’s a twisted amalgamation of Runes, raw Essence, and abyssal flesh. Delightful! As gross as it is, it’s going to come in handy.

Firstly, you can stick your Tainted Essence into the Extractor. In exchange for a bit of GP, it’ll suck out all the wrong types of runic energy and compress the rest, leaving you with stackable Extracts that serve as catalysts for Runecraft. This will let you craft significantly more of the corresponding Runes!

Alternatively, you can clean your Tainted Essence to turn it back into Pure Essence. This method will create up to 10,000 Pure Essence per hour. It’s a faster (and free!) way to get your hands on this vital Runecraft component.

We’ve put together this handy flowchart to make the process clear:

Further information about costs, balancing and general design can be found in this newspost.

Poll 80

Today’s Poll 80 update introduces the new-and-improved Skill Guide!
  • Opening the Skill Guide no longer pauses actions.
  • On PC, the Skill Guide can now be moved around and resized by clicking and dragging the title bar.
    • The position will be remembered next time you open the window.
  • The new Skill Guide style can be selected from the Settings menu.
Other Improvements
  • A common type of tree stump found around Falador, Varrock and the Pest Control minigame no longer blocks players from ranging over it.
    • Some of the Pest Control towers may be a little better for snipers now.
  • Fixed a bug where Player-Owned House dungeons in the 'Basic wood', 'Basic stone', 'Whitewashed stone' and 'Fremennik-style wood' house styles didn’t permit multi-way combat, despite having a multi-way combat icon.
  • The 3-tick teleport delay in the single-way Wilderness Boss lairs now only applies if you have recently attacked the bosses.
  • On the Permanent Deadman world, PK skulls obtained from combat are now only 5 minutes long, as they were in the Apocalypse seasonal worlds, rather than lasting between 15 and 30 minutes.
    • The opponent's combat level no longer affects their duration.
  • Attacking any skulled player now gives a PK skull on the Permanent Deadman World.
  • Once the Beta Worlds open, players will now be able to reset their saved game profiles via a new option on the Settings menu.

Note that we’re hard at work implementing further changes to the Permanent Deadman World, including removing XP loss on death and giving XP multipliers for quest rewards. Keep your eyes peeled for these improvements in coming weeks!
Leagues IV Home Teleport Animation
Our wonderfully talented Art Team has been hard at work getting the cosmetics ready in time for Leagues IV: Trailblazer Reloaded!

Today we’d like to show off a new concept for the Home Teleport we initially showcased in the Leagues IV blog. The original looked a bit too similar to the one awarded through Quest Speedrunning, so here’s something different!

Fun fact: the reason we’re able to show you a full animation instead of just concept art is that this Home Teleport was developed for the original Trailblazer League! Originally, we wanted the cosmetics to use a ‘blazing’ theme – like Trailblazer, get it? We eventually went with a ‘travel’ theme instead – but now that we’re ‘firing up’ Trailblazer again, we think it’s the perfect time to let this fiery animation fly.

What do you think? Are you a fan of the flames, or do we need to cool off? Let us know your thoughts!
Community Feedback Request: Shooting Stars
After a somewhat rocky start, we’re happy to see the community enjoying the latest Shooting Stars update. We’d especially like to congratulate the Starminers Discord for bringing the Old School community together.

The sheer number of players engaging with this update tells us we’re on the right track when it comes to our Mining improvements – although there’s one slight problem we need to address.

You see, Shooting Stars has become so popular that worlds are now experiencing unexpected lag due to the number of players logging on to mine Stars. The sudden uptick in logins causes a lag spike, which persists until the Star is depleted and everyone logs off to find the next one.

The below graph illustrates the tick time increase relative to the life cycle of a Star on September 25th. As you can see, tick time gradually increases as more players log on, and drops drastically when the Star is depleted.

Unfortunately, this is a big problem for the game. If we don’t take action to protect our servers, these lag spikes could become even more serious down the road. That said, we really want to keep the positivity going – so we’re keeping the changes to Shooting Stars while encouraging you all to spread out just a little more.

As always, we’re committed to working with you all on this issue – and we’ve already seen some fantastic suggestions from the community.

We’ve seen players call for Stars to be ringfenced to certain worlds, in the hope that they won’t affect the rest. However, this still means that these worlds will be extra affected – so we’re doing you one better. As well as creating designated ‘Star worlds’, we plan to have identical stars of the same tier and location fall at the same time across every designated world, thereby encouraging players to spread between them.

We’re aware that some of you prefer big Stars to small ones, and vice versa. We’re considering implementing two sets of Star worlds, with big Stars in one set and small Stars in the other.

After considering several options, we think that this is the best solution we have right now – but we’re aware it isn’t perfect. For one thing, these identical Stars would all land and deplete at the same time, so it will be harder to jump to another Star immediately afterwards. Secondly, if the Stars all land in the same place, there may be players who can't yet access that area and will have to twiddle their thumbs until the next set of Stars land. We want to work with you to figure out how best to approach this problem.

If you have strong feelings about the solution we’ve pitched above, click the button below to complete a survey on the matter. We’re also looking for alternative ideas, so let us know your thoughts!

In the meantime, it’s clear that the community wants Mining improvements sooner rather than later. This is something we’re actively looking into, so stay tuned, and keep sending your feedback!

Further Poll 80 Changes & More! | September 20th

Today we’re launching a flotilla of Poll 80 changes! Keep reading to learn more…

There will be 30 minutes of downtime with this week's update, with game worlds expected to be back up by 12:00 BST. If you're a mobile user, you may need to manually update the Old School RuneScape App via the App store to ensure you have the latest version.
Poll 80
Wilderness Boss Lairs

Our first stop in the update train is the Wilderness, where we’ve made a few improvements to the Wilderness Boss Lairs:
  • Players are now unable to teleport out of the Wilderness Boss Caves for 3 ticks after they enter.
    • This delay can be avoided if you have completed the Wilderness Hard Diary.
  • The 1-tick animation delay for everyone entering the dungeon has now been removed.

Wilderness Hard Diary Unlocks

Just to clarify, here are the new bonuses you’ll receive if you’ve completed the Wilderness Hard Diary:
  • The teleport delay in the Revenant Caves will no longer apply to you.
  • The teleport delay in the Wilderness Boss Caves will no longer apply to you.

Enjoy those speedy teleports – you’ve earned ‘em!

Wilderness Medium Diary

You now need to have completed the Medium Wilderness Achievement Diary to access Spindel, Artio and Calvar'ion.

Callisto Changes

Next up, we’re visiting the bear in the big scary lair! Here are the improvements we’ve made to Callisto and her little buddy Artio:
  • Callisto and Artio should now both take damage from Magic attacks from any source.
    • Additionally, if they are not already frozen and the attacking player has equipment with a total Magic accuracy greater than 0, the first attack that would freeze the boss is guaranteed to hit.
    • Future hits while the boss is frozen are not guaranteed to hit.
  • We've augmented their Magic defence to compensate for this change.
    • Callisto's base Magic level has been raised, visible in the far-left tab of Monster Examine.
  • Callisto's chip damage has been removed.
  • Callisto's Ranged attack will no longer deal damage through the relevant protection Prayer.

Blighted Magic Sacks

You can now cast all your favourite spells with just one item!
  • Bind/Snare Sacks have been converted into Entangle Sacks. Entangle Sacks can also cast Bind/Snare if players have the required Magic level.
    • The conversion rate is 1 Entangle for 13 Bind, 1 Entangle for 3 Snares (rounded down).
  • Wave Sacks have been converted into Surge Sacks. Surge Sacks can also cast Wave spells if players have the required Magic level.

Existing Sacks will be converted upon login for all players. Non-UIMs will have Sacks sent to the Bank, and UIMs will have them arrive in their Inventory if they have any to convert.

In other Blighted news:
  • Blighted food can now be used anywhere in PvP Worlds. Non-PvP Worlds are unaffected by this change.

Repair Cost Changes

To make PK victory even sweeter, we're bumping up the repair cost for certain PvP items. As you’re all aware, the repair cost is dropped to the PKer below level 20 Wilderness, so this is a sweet deal! Here’s how it works:
  • Dragon Defender repair cost has been increased from 80,000 to 240,000 GP
  • Avernic Defender repair cost has been increased from 300,000 to 600,000 GP
  • Ava’s Assembler repair cost has been increased from 75,000 to 240,000 GP
  • Full Void repair cost increased from 300,000 to 640,000 GP
    • Any Helmet – 160,000 GP
    • Void Body – 180,000 GP
    • Void Bottom – 180,000 GP
    • Void Gloves – 120,000 GP
  • Elite Void repair cost has been increased from 400,000 to 780,000 GP
    • Elite Void Body – 250,000 GP
    • Elite Void Bottom – 250,000 GP

During our internal playtests, we also decided on the following additional changes:
  • Infernal Cape repair cost has been increased from 75,000 to 225,000 GP
  • Fire Cape and Fighter Torso repair cost has been increased from 50,000 to 150,000 GP

Avernic Defender and Elidinis Ward Values

The Trouver version of the Avernic Defenders will now only protect to the value of the Trouver parchment and 500,000 GP fee, meaning that it won't rank higher than another item such as a Berserker Ring for example. Conversely, we've made a change so that a fortified Elidinis Ward will now protect to the combined values of the Elidinis Ward and the Arcane Sigil, meaning it will rank highly over other items on death.

For now, we've only adjusted the value of these two items. Let us know if you’d like to see this change applied to more stuff!

Splash Weapons Are Back

Certain holiday items now have -100 Combat bonuses, allowing them to behave as splash weaponry. They are, in fact, unable to deal any damage whatsoever! Here they are:
  • Cursed Goblin Hammer
  • Easter 2020 Carrot Sword
  • Halloween 2016 Hunting Knife
  • Christmas 2022 Nutcracker Staff

Other Changes
Emptying Sacks, Pouches, Boxes and Bags on Death

Back in the summer, we updated the Rune Pouch so that upon PvM death the Runes would stay inside it, rather than mysteriously being shaken out all over your grave.

It seems you really enjoy not having to manually put all your bits and bobs back in the Pouch, because you’ve asked that we expand this system to other, similar containers.

You asked, and we delivered! The following items will now behave similarly:
  • Bolt Pouch
  • Seed Box
  • Tackle Box
  • Essence Pouches
  • Herb Sack

If you’re one of the few who really enjoy putting things into bags and sacks one by one (or if you’re an Ultimate Iron Man), you can choose to disable this behaviour in the Settings Menu. Happy packing!

Note that this setting applies only to deaths where the container item is sent to a grave – if it’s destroyed, the contents will still fall out regardless of the setting. In PvP, the contents will most likely go to your PKer.

As a side-effect of this update, dying in deep Wilderness PvM now means that your Seed Box and Bolt Pouch can be retrieved from your grave, instead of having to be repurchased. Hooray!

Shooting Stars Buff

You’ve been sharing some truly wild low-intensity Mining methods on socials, so we thought it was time to put you (and the Duke) out of your misery and launch a buff for Shooting Stars:
  • Shooting Stars no longer deplete faster when more people are Mining them. No more pesky fellow players interfering with your precious AFK time!
  • In addition, your character will no longer occasionally render behind the Shooting Star you’re Mining.

We know this change won’t fix all the issues players have raised with Mining, but it’s a good step in the right direction. We’ll continue to monitor the conversation on this subject, so please keep voicing your feedback! We really appreciate all the suggestions we’ve seen so far – even the weird ones.

Bug Fixes
  • The Warped Sceptre’s projectile height has been adjusted to match the Sceptre.
  • Duke Sucellus’ 5-minute inactivity timer now restarts if you click the Salt again.
  • Implemented a log-in check to ensure that Sigils and other unwanted items do not appear on World 45.

Path of Glouphrie

We hope you’ve enjoyed getting stuck into our latest quest and the fetid poison cave that came with it!

The Warped Sceptre has received glowing feedback from the community, and we’re happy to have filled a small gap in the Ironman grind. In accordance with tradition, we can now confirm that the drop rate for the Warped Sceptre is 1/320.

We also have a single change launching this week, in line with your feedback:
  • The Poison Waste Spirit Tree has been moved to the end of the list.

Any future Spirit Trees will also be placed at the end of the list, so you can give your muscle memory a break. In the future, we’d like to make this a fully customisable feature, although that’s not something we’re able to commit development time to just yet. Let us know if it’s something you’d be interested in!
Upcoming Poll, September 25th
Three additional questions will be added to the Hunter Guild poll starting on September 25th:

Should we change the Dragonfire Shield's fiery attack to reward only Defence experience in both PvM and PvP?
Should we add an additional Slayer Task Block Slot, unlocked at 300QP?

These ones shouldn’t come as a surprise – after all, we talked about them just the other day! The third question, however, needs a bit of context.

The Shooting Stars changes that go live this week were received well by the community – it’s great to not have to AFK in total isolation to get the most out of your Stars. However, some of you raised that you feel you’ve lost the key incentive to solo scout Shooting Stars. We can see that although this change doesn’t actually take anything away, it has made finding a Star all by yourself less exciting. So, next week’s poll will also contain the following question:

Should we once again reward the first player to discover a Shooting Star? This would double the amount of Stardust you mine until you have gained 300 extra Stardust. This bonus will not expire and can be used on any Star you come across. Should you be the first to find another Star, any remaining bonus will recharge back to 300.

We’re not comfortable adding an XP boost for solo-scouted Stars until we’ve seen the full effects of the recent changes – but we’ll keep in mind all your feedback about how Mining feels as we move forward!
Mobile TLI Beta
Today’s update also brings the foundations of the Mobile TLI Beta. From tomorrow, Thursday 21st, you’ll have access to exclusive Beta worlds which use the new mobile UI. In a Beta worlds first, you’ll also have access to a copy of your main game save, so you can try playing exactly how you’re used to while taking the new UI for a test drive.

PLEASE NOTE: We've pushed an update that many players will get automatically but please check your App store to make sure you have the latest version - install any update that is available to you to ensure you're all set to continue your adventures!

If you’d like to use your main game save on a Beta world, we recommend first logging into a normal world and making your way to the Settings menu. Select Gameplay and scroll down to the bottom to see the new Beta worlds options.

Here, you’ll be able to convert a save for use on the Beta worlds or reset your current Beta worlds save for a fresh experience. Without a converted save, you’ll be shunted back to Tutorial Island with the rest of the n00bs – although since this is a Beta world, you’ll be offered a handy teleport to the mainland if you’d like to start your adventure right away.

You'll be able to access the content in the following worlds:
  • World 585 - AUS
  • World 586 - GER
  • World 587 - UK
  • World 588 - US West
  • World 589 - US East

Once you’re done playing around in the Beta, simply switch to a normal world and resume playing however you normally would.

This has been a big project, and we’re excited to hear your feedback. We’ll be keeping a close eye on discussion, so feel free to join the conversation on the Official Old School Discord’s Mobile Beta channels.

To leave your feedback, simply head to the Official Old School Discord and find the ‘OSRS Mobile’ category. From there, you'll see plenty of channels to leave your feedback.

Below you’ll also find a Mobile UI Beta Survey (ooh!) where you can tell us your thoughts. We’ll be paying close attention to all your feedback to make sure the next steps are aligned with the community’s expectations – so be sure to let us know what you think!

Old School RuneScape punishes innovation, prevents player from using their own severed toe to skirt anti-botting rules

Botting, generally, is frowned upon in MMOs. Using any kind of tool to automate your play and amass experience and resources is against the rules in pretty much every major multiplayer game I can think of, but one Old School RuneScape (OSRS) player thought they'd found a loophole. As spotted by GamesRadar, they asked OSRS developer Jagex if it really counts as using a third-party automation tool if the tool in question is their literal amputated toe...

The Path of Glouphrie | September 13th

Today’s update brings a long-awaited sequel…

The Path of Glouphrie
As part of our last Game Jam, we began the process of porting another iconic RuneScape quest to Old School RuneScape – and made a few improvements while we were at it!

Give a warm welcome to The Path of Glouphrie, the sequel to The Eyes of Glouphrie and the next part in the gnome questline.

In The Eyes of Glouphrie, you revealed a sinister espionage plot aimed at the Gnome Stronghold. Now it seems that King Bolren has acquired a worrying new pet. It appears that Glouphrie’s next target is the Tree Gnome Village… what could he be planning?

Start the quest by speaking to King Bolren in the Tree Gnome Village!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

If you can't see the video above, click here to play it!

Requirements and Rewards
  • Completion of The Eyes of Glouphrie, Waterfall Quest and Tree Gnome Village
  • 60 Strength
  • 56 Slayer
  • 56 Thieving
  • 47 Ranged
  • 45 Agility

Upon completion you'll be rewarded with:
  • 2 Quest Points
  • Poison Waste Dungeon Access
  • Two Lamps offering a total of 20,000 Slayer XP and 5,000 Thieving XP
  • Two Lamps offering a total of 30,000 Strength XP and 5,000 Magic XP

New Poison Waste Dungeon

Upon completion of The Path of Glouphrie, you'll also gain access to a brand-new (for Old School) Slayer Dungeon

Here, you’ll have the chance to take on deadly Warped Tortoises and Terrorbirds. But wait – these aren’t the beasties you remember. We’ve taken the opportunity to totally rebalance their stats and loot tables – and while we were at it, we’ve also implemented a few other quality of life changes:
  • Players no longer need to use a Crystal Chime on Warped Tortoises and Terrorbirds during a fight. Instead, they need only have one in their Inventory.
  • Crystal Chimes are now made from a separate Crystal Seed than the Crystal Saw. No more swapping between them!
  • The dungeon creatures share a single ‘warped creatures’ Slayer Task, rather than having individual ones.
    • This Slayer Task is opt-in, so you’ll need to unlock it.
    • We’re also polling an additional block slot unlocked at 300 Quest Points.

The Warped Sceptre

We’ve also added an Old School-exclusive unique drop to the Poison Waste Dungeon – the Warped Sceptre. This mid-level item is a drop from the Warped Creatures, which can be killed off-task if you so choose.

While the drop rates will remain a secret on the first day of the quest, as is tradition, we promise to release them soon.

In terms of the current meta, you’ll find that Iban’s Staff will outperform the Warped Sceptre in raw DPS until you hit level 81 Magic, at which point its damage output will be higher. For those of you with lower Magic levels, you’ll find that the Warped Sceptre is still a great mid-level unlock, and almost certainly something you’ll want to work towards before you get your hands on your first Trident.

As the Warped Sceptre is a self-powered staff, you’ll be able to use it with any Spellbook you choose. Its other strength is its high attack speed, which means that boosts to Magic damage from Elidinis’ Ward, the Occult Necklace, the Imbued God Capes, and other items will scale more effectively with the Warped Sceptre than with Iban’s Staff.

Finally, it looks awesome. Check out the claws!

Future Polled Additional Slayer Block Slot

The release of Path of Glouphrie means that there are now a whopping 300 Quest Points available for you spacebar-smashing crusaders to get your hands on.

Currently, every 50 Quest Points unlocks a new Slayer block slot. We considered building this into today’s update, but since this addition significantly alters existing Slayer metas, we thought we’d poll it just in case.

You’ll be able to cast your vote on this issue in our next poll, which is currently scheduled for the end of September. If this change passes, you can expect it to launch fairly quickly – so you won’t have to wait too long!

Mobile TLI Beta
Today’s update also brings the foundations for the Mobile TLI Beta. From tomorrow, Thursday 14th, you’ll have access to exclusive Beta worlds which use the new mobile UI. In a Beta worlds first, you’ll also have access to a copy of your main game save, so you can try playing exactly how you’re used to while taking the new UI for a test drive.

PLEASE NOTE: TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS BETA YOU WILL NEED TO MANUALLY UPDATE THE OLD SCHOOL RUNESCAPE MOBILE CLIENT BY VISITING THE GOOGLE PLAY OR APP STORE. IF THIS IS NOT DONE, YOU WILL EXPERIENCE UI ISSUES WHEN SWITCHING BETWEEN BETA AND NON-BETA WORLDS.

Other Changes
We’re also launching a Poll 80 change today! As of this update, the Wintertodt respawn timer is now fixed at one minute. A handy countdown will appear in the empty energy bar.

The remaining high-priority Poll 80 changes are coming next week – including the Callisto chip damage changes and the Medium Diary requirement for Wilderness bosses. Community feedback has told us that these changes are very important to you, so we hope you’re looking forward to ‘em!

Speaking of our lovely community, you’ve been having some heated discussions regarding a new AFK Mining method developed after the Desert Treasure II launch. You resourceful lot have been using the Salt deposits in the Duke’s fight to mine to your heart’s content! While we admire your tenacity, we don’t feel that this method is good for the game. We love a good low-intensity training method, but this appears to be ‘free XP’ – and we don’t like that.

We’ve seen all sides of the conversation and understand that some of you don’t see any harm in keeping this unintended training method around. However, we hope that you trust us to do what’s best for the game – and in this case, that means making this method unviable.

As of today’s update, Mining the Duke’s Salt deposits for more than five minutes will tire you out and cause you to stop for a breather.

We also have some minor changes and improvements this week:
  • Fixed wording on the GIM leaving interface.
  • GIM leaders who wish to abdicate no longer need another active member in their group to do so.
  • The Grand Exchange sales fee is no longer charged on Deadman: Apocalypse worlds.
  • You can now check charges remaining on the Blade of Saeldor while it is equipped.
  • The Bind, Snare, and Entangle spells now give slightly different XP depending on whether the spell will hit or splash. This also means that you can predict success by looking at how much XP you’ve received.
    • For Bind, a success now gives 31 XP, up from 30.
    • For Snare, a success now gives 61 XP (plus damage), up from 60.
    • Entangle already had an XP difference in PvP combat, and we’ve applied the same numbers to PvM. A success is now worth 89 XP, up from 70.
  • The Wilderness Diary Task that required players to kill a lava dragon and bury its Bones now completes when the dragon is killed, without requiring you to do any burying – after all, that’s not the hard part of the challenge!
  • The Locator Orb is now permitted in Castle Wars.
Deadman: Apocalypse
Today marks the halfway point of Deadman: Apocalypse! It’s been a blast seeing you all get involved with this apocalyptic spin on the iconic game mode, and we hope you’ve had as much fun playing as we’ve had watching along.

As you know, to keep things fair we’re taking a hands-off approach to tweaks and improvements, but we’re committed to fixing major issues as we encounter them.

Today, we’ve made changes to a handful of multi-way combat Breach locations. Some of the spawning points for these Breaches were a bit closer to single-way combat zones than intended, and some players were able to take advantage of the situation to tackle these Breaches in (relative) safety.

Breach spawns near Tithe Farm, north of the Grand Exchange, and north of the King Black Dragon’s lair have all been adjusted. We’ve also removed the potential spawn north of Falador altogether.

Don’t worry – if you’re not ready to risk it all in a multi-way combat Breach, there are plenty of singles Breaches you can try instead.

Also in this week’s update, we’ve extended Nigel’s extraordinary XP toggling powers to Banks across Gielinor. You'll now find a handy 'Toggle XP' option on the Deadman chests that you'd primarily use to open up your loot keys -that’ll save you schlepping back to Lumbridge every time you want to change things up!

Additionally, we're taking a few more worlds out of the mix to try and condense action a little further towards the end of the tournament! Here's a list of the worlds we're taking out, the brackets they're in, and the region those worlds serve:
  • 3 - 50 Bracket: Worlds 407 (UK) and 440 (US West) removed.
  • 51 - 70 Bracket: World 438 (US West) removed.
  • 71 - 90 Bracket: World 411 (US West) removed.
  • 91 - 110 Bracket: World 410 (US West) removed.
  • 111 - 126 Bracket: World 409 (US West) removed.

The next two changes concern teleporting. Firstly, the Ring of Life will no longer be able to teleport players during combat in Deadman Mode. While this is expected behaviour in the main game, we don’t allow Deadmen to teleport in combat at all, and the Ring of Life could previously be used to circumvent this restriction. To keep things fair, we’re removing the teleportation effect from the Ring of Life, the Defence Skill Cape, and the Escape Crystal.

We’ve also made a change to the Trinket of Fairies – namely, it is now subject to the same restrictions as Dragonstone Jewellery and the Seed Pod, and cannot be used past level 30 Wilderness. You’ll need to get your running shoes out if you’re caught at the Ice Plateau!

Last (and probably also least), we’ve made the Sigil of the Feral Fighter less spammy. Now, if your game chat is set to ‘Filtered’, you won’t receive a chat message every time the Sigil is about to activate. If you happen to love spam (we won’t judge!) and have been relying on these messages during combat, feel free to change your game chat settings in the relevant settings menu.

As a reminder, next Monday marks the start of the final week of the tournament. Enjoy the chaos while it lasts, and we’ll see you at the finale on Saturday, September 16th!
Jagex Launcher Updates: New Look & HDOS
Tomorrow (Thursday 7th September), the Jagex Launcher will receive a fresh coat of paint! This change is entirely cosmetic, as it brings a new look and feel to the Launcher.

Alongside this update, we're also happy to announce that the community-led HDOS client will also be available to use directly from the Launcher too! If you already have the HDOS client installed, it will show as an available option for you in the client selection drop-down. Want to give HDOS a try? You can find out more, including a link to download it here.

If you haven't already tried out the Launcher, now is a great time to do so! Coupled with Jagex Accounts, it's the safest and most secure way to play Old School. We recently added additional functionality such as:
  • Import up to 20 characters under one login
  • Enhanced account security, including:
  • Stronger Passwords.
  • Protection against Brute-Force attempts.
  • Email Notifications.
  • Required 2FA.
  • Improved Recovery Process (including Backup Codes).
  • Remembered Sessions.
  • Easily import characters you may have forgotten about.
  • 20 additional bank spaces.

For more information on Jagex Accounts, check out this handy post from July 2023.
On The Horizon
Since this week’s update’s been a little quiet, we thought we’d give you a quick update on what we’re working on behind the scenes. Right this way, please…

Ongoing Poll: Leagues IV Rewards and Scar Essence Mine

Don’t forget to cast your vote for the Leagues IV rewards and the Scar Essence Mine. Not sure what those are? Check out the blogs!

These polls close on Friday, September 8th, so read up and have your say while you can!

Next week: Path of Glouphrie

At our Summer Summit, we spoke about our next iconic quest backport: Path of Glouphrie. We'll be putting an Old School spin on this classic continuation of the Gnome storyline, with overhauled versions of Warped Tortoises and Warped Terrorbirds.

You can look forward to more QoL than ever before when taking on these unsettling new foes, as well as updated drop tables, rebalanced stats and a chance at the Warped Sceptre: a brand new powered staff, whose power sits between Iban's Blast and the Trident of the Seas. For more info, check out the blog we shared during the Summer Summit by clicking here.

So make sure to get your questing boots on next week for a whole host of Gnome antics, without any monkey business!

Varlamore: Community Consultation

It’ll soon be time for us to journey to Varlamore, the vast, unexplored continent we revealed at the Summer Summit.

In our first batch, you can expect the Hunter Guild, the Perilous Moons quest, and the Fortis Colosseum – along with a few other bits and bobs. We’ll be kicking off Community Consultation for these three major updates very soon, so keep an eye out for your chance to get involved!

Poll 80 Changes

Undoubtedly there are many of you out there waiting on the last bits of Poll 80. Rest assured that they are coming, but that while Deadman: Apocalypse is ongoing we're trying to avoid adding much main game content that's likely to impact the tournament.

This is a decision that we've had to make for fairness, UK competition laws and in particular for the more PvP oriented changes (in paritcular: the reworked Wilderness Bosses) to let people enjoy Deadman before coming back to try them in the regular Wilderness - and of course, future Deadman events!

So: Poll 80 changes are on the way, make sure to keep an eye out after Deadman: Apocalypse wraps up!

Forestry Pt. II: Beta Cancellation

On a sadder note, we’ve made the decision to cancel the upcoming Forestry Part II beta so we can focus on the Mobile TLI update. We’ll also be using this time to get our existing beta worlds ship shape for upcoming bigger and more impactful betas.

Rest assured, we’ve learned plenty from Forestry Part I and will be aiming for a much healthier spread of XP rates for the new events coming in Part II. Plus, in case you’ve forgotten – Forestry Part II will not include tea.
Other Changes
Finally, we have a couple more changes in this week’s update.

Firstly, the dialogue box pop-up for TzHaar Slayer Tasks will no longer default to a regular TzHaar task if closed prematurely. Instead, you’ll be able to chat to your Slayer Master and make your choice again. Note that if you run off and accidentally kill a regular TzHaar without making a decision, your task will default to a regular TzHaar one – so watch where you’re aiming that Ice Barrage!

Those of you who are currently regents in the Kingdom of Miscellania will be glad to know that your subjects now attend to your various whims at exactly midnight each day, instead of whatever time you initially completed the quest. Incidentally, this timer is ‘rounded up’ – so upon your next login you should find an extra day’s worth of resources waiting for you. More logs, Sire?

Finally, we’ve adjusted a symbol on one of the chests in the Stronghold of Security in line with other changes made to medical-themed models throughout the game.
