Easter 2023 and BH Rewards Beta Changes | Weekly Game Update (April 5th)

This week we’re putting a spring in your step with the 2023 Easter Event!

Easter Event
The Easter Bunny is back, and once again, he needs your help to keep egg production on track! In what seems to be a recurring tradition, the fate of the entire holiday rests on your shoulders, as you use your best detective skills to track down the Easter Bunny’s Egg Mould in time to feast on the chocolatey goodness.

To kick off this year’s event, head to Varrock, where the Easter Bunny is hanging out between Varrock West Bank and Zaff’s Staff Shop.

Tracking down the Egg Mould will be no simple task. You’ll have to navigate through conversations with all of Gertrude’s children – and they’re a pesky bunch! They’re so pesky, in fact, that they wouldn’t even tell us where they’ve hidden the Egg Mould – so you’re on your own!

We can reveal, however, that you’ll be rewarded with some egg-citing fashionscape for your efforts: some hot-to-trot headwear and a fearsome new weapon.

Lastly, here are some words from Mod Manked, who developed the event:

Hey gamers!

It's official, my first piece of content being released into OSRS is here. Words cannot express how excited I am for you all to delve in to the Easter event this year. After being a 'Scaper for over half of my life, it's been heartwarming to work on the game I love, to produce a fun experience for you all. It's been delightful working with so many talented, enthusiastic, hard-working people to produce this fun seasonal event which should get your brain ticking. I'm ecstatic to work on some really awesome projects coming throughout the year, 2023 is going to be amazing for Old School.

The Art team have done a fantastic job with the rewards, the art team never miss (unlike my ags). I look forward to seeing the Easter rewards being used in-game, I'm confident there is one reward the community will try some interesting challenges with...

Stay safe and happy 'Scaping!

- Mod Manked

Aww!

Now for something a little less sugary: the ongoing Bounty Hunter Rewards beta!
Bounty Hunter Rewards Beta Changes
Last week we opened up beta worlds 401, 405, 407, 409 and 412 to give players a chance to test some of the proposed rewards for Bounty Hunter, coming later this year.

Following your feedback, we’ve made a handful of changes, specifically to the Corrupt Ancient Warrior Armours, the imbued Dark Bow, and the imbued Abyssal Dagger.

Some of you felt as though the Corrupt Ancient Warrior Armours were underwhelming offensively, and that they lacked a solid Strength bonus to make those extra combat levels worth your while. Additionally, the Accuracy bonuses were less useful than they could be, as a lot of players will be using these sets to fight other low-Defence builds. We’ve taken this feedback on board and given the Corrupt sets a little extra oomph!

Additionally, we saw lots of comparisons between Morrigan’s Armour and Void Knight Armour – although they have similar Accuracy bonuses, Void’s Strength bonus, coupled with the low risk of the Bounty Hunter environment, leaves Morrigan’s set looking less desirable. We’ve decided to give both the Corrupted and Uncorrupted versions some Ranged Strength bonuses for this week of the beta, to see if this helps.

Ancient Warrior's Equipment
  • Statius' Full Helm (c): Increased Strength bonus from 0 to 2.
  • Statius' Platebody (c): Increased Strength bonus from 0 to 4.
  • Statius' Platelegs (c): Increased Strength bonus from 0 to 2.
  • Vesta's Chainbody (c): Increased Strength bonus from 2 to 5, increased Stab, Slash and Crush bonuses from 7 to 8.
  • Vesta's Plateskirt (c): Increased Stab, Slash and Crush bonuses from 5 to 6.
  • Morrigan's Coif: Increased Ranged Strength bonus from 0 to 4.
  • Morrigan's Leather Body: Increased Ranged Strength bonus from 0 to 6.
  • Morrigan's Leather Chaps: Increased Ranged Strength bonus from 0 to 6.
  • Morrigan's Coif (c): Increased Ranged bonus from 7 to 13. Increased Ranged Strength bonus from 0 to 2.
  • Morrigan's Leather Body (c): Increased Ranged bonus from 16 to 36. Increased Ranged Strength bonus from 0 to 4.
  • Morrigan's Leather Chaps (c): Increased Ranged bonus from 12 to 23. Increased Ranged Strength bonus from 0 to 4.
  • Zuriel's Hood (c): Increased Magic bonus from 4 to 5.
  • Zuriel's Robe Top (c): Increased Magic bonus from 15 to 25.
  • Zuriel's Robe Bottom (c): Increased Magic bonus from 10 to 18.
Weapon Imbues

We’re largely happy with how the imbued variants of several weapons are shaking out. However, we have made some small changes to the Dark Bow and the Abyssal Dagger.

Dark Bow (i)

Although many of you feel the Dark Bow is much improved by the imbue, we’ve seen suggestions that the delay between hits makes its Special Attack easy to eat through and that it struggles to be viable as a result.

For the second week of the beta, we’ve tweaked the imbued Dark Bow’s Special Attack so that both arrows land at the same time. We’re really interested to see your feedback on this one, so let us know if this change makes the bow feel more useful, or just more OP.

Abyssal Dagger (i)

Remember what we said about ‘no longer living in the shadow of the Dragon Dagger’? Well, it seems that statement has aged a little too well.

To recap, the imbued version comes with a nice Accuracy increase and ditches the damage reduction component of the Special Attack. Combined with the set effects of the Ancient Warrior gear, the Dagger is seriously consistent and hits extremely hard. We’d like to rein it in a little and add back -5% damage reduction to the Special Attack. We’re open to further tweaks on this one. Our aim is to make the Abyssal Dagger (i) feel good to use, without making it feel like a death sentence when your opponent equips one.

Ancient Warrior Weapons

It's the moment you’ve been waiting for! We’ve enabled the Ancient Warrior weapons for this week of the beta.

That means you’ll now be able to try out Statius’ Warhammer, Vesta’s Longsword, Vesta’s Spear, Zuriel’s Staff, Morrigan’s Throwing Axes and Morrigan’s Javelins! Their stats are unchanged from the versions that already exist in Last Man Standing and Deadman Mode, but we think it’s important that you're able to test them alongside the other rewards on offer.

As a final couple of tweaks to the beta worlds, you should now be able to test your shiny new weapons out on the dummy inside your Player Owned House. Additionally, your Energy will now drain as normal when running since we've seen a few requests for this to facilitate more realistic interactions when testing various PvP scenarios!

Now, before we move on to this week’s smaller changes, we’ve got an update regarding Jagex Accounts…

Jagex Accounts Open Beta
It’s HAPPENING! Yesterday, we expanded our Jagex Accounts beta from 50% of players to 100% of players.

Now, anyone who wants to can navigate to their Account Settings on our website and opt-in to the Jagex Accounts beta. This represents a huge step forward for account security, allowing players to protect all their characters under a single, safe Jagex Account.

If you’ve somehow missed all the news about Jagex Accounts, you can read all about them in this blog post.

After signing up, you must make a note of your backup codes and keep them in a safe place. This is the only way you’ll be able to recover your account if you forget your details or lose access to your authenticator after making the switch, so it’s imperative that you have them on deck!

Now, let’s wrap up with a tasty spoonful of miscellaneous changes.

Other Changes
• Players can now toggle a ‘Make-x’ interface for Fletching Darts. This setting is toggled Off by default for existing accounts, but can be enabled in the Settings Menu. If you're making a new account, this setting will be toggled On by default and needs to be disabled if you'd like to go back to making darts rapidly.
  • The mobile client will now remember whether or not your minimap was expanded the last time you logged out.
  • The Soul Bearer will now ask players how many charges they’d like to add, rather than just using all the runes they have available. How polite!
  • Zealot Robes now provide their resource-saving bonus to Ensouled Heads on the ground, meaning those of you looking to save valuable ticks by dropping your Ensouled Heads before reanimating (or reanimating them without ever picking them up in the first place) will have a shot at preserving them!
  • Fixed a bug in Tombs of Amascut where freezing a Warden just as it was waking up would simply remove it from existence. Oops!
  • Praying at an altar will now reset the timer on any Prayer Point draining effects. We’ve also applied this change to Player Owned House pools, the Falador Elite Shield, and various Raid rooms.
  • Fixed a bug where the Occult Necklace was not being dropped upon death for the Max/Med and Zerker modes in Last Man Standing. It is still deleted on death in 1 Def Pure mode, where the necklace is offered as a starting loadout item.
  • Players can now check the number of charges in their Revenant weapons and their Wilderness Boss upgrades while in the Bank interface, via a new ‘Check’ option.
  • Previously inaccessible music tracks from Castle Wars, Clan Wars, Last Man Standing, the Volcanic Mine, the Fossil Island underwater area and Trouble Brewing have been made available on the Deadman world (345). Visiting or attempting to enter the relevant areas will unlock the tracks.
  • Activity HiScores that previously had a minimum KC of 30 have been expanded; the new minimum is 25. Players in the 25-29 KC range should find that their scores are added gradually over their next few gaming sessions. As a reminder, we’re rolling this update out in seperate parts to reduce strain on the HiScores system, and you can expect to see more expansions in the coming weeks!
Crack the Clue
Woox has provided us all with an especially cryptic clue this week. With no additional information needed, feast your eyes on this week's hint:

PvP World Rota

The PvP rota has moved to Period A:
  • 539 - (US) - PvP World
  • 548 - (Germany) - High-Risk PvP World
  • 577 - (US) - Free-to-Play PvP World
  • 559 - (UK) - LMS Competitive

World 390 (AUS) for LMS Competitive has been activated with this rota. The PvP Arena is using 'Max/Med' loadouts in Ranked Duels and Tournaments this week.

That's a wrap on this week, we hope to see loads of you helping the Easter bunny, trying out the new additions to the Bounty Hunter Rewards beta and - perhaps most importantly - levelling up your Account security by making the switch to Jagex Accounts in our open beta!

MMO gets its first new skill in 17 years, or it will when players stop fighting over which one should be added

Old School RuneScape (OSRS) was just 'RuneScape' the last time it got a new skill. Back in November 2006, developer Jagex added the Hunter ability, bringing the game's roster of skills up to 23. While modern RuneScape (also called RuneScape 3) has added five new skills since then, OSRS has stuck stubbornly to the 23 from 2006 ever since it released ten years ago. But now Jagex wants to add another, and debate is raging among the playerbase...

Quest Speedrunning Final Batch | Weekly Game Update (March 22nd)

Attention speedy ‘Scapers: the final batch of Quest Speedrunning updates is here!

This week's update is smaller than most, so we wanted to take a moment to let you know that the team are working away behind the scenes. Next week you'll be able to get your hands on some upcoming Bounty Hunter rewards in beta worlds. When the Bounty Hunter rewards beta wraps up, you'll get the chance to experiment with some Desert Treasure II - The Fallen Empire rewards in another beta. If you're not feeling beta (sorry...) after reading that, perhaps the promise of three New Skill pitches in the very near future is something to look forward to!

With all that said, let's take a look at exactly what's changing in Gielinor this week.

Changelog - March 22nd

[expand]
Quest Speedrunning - Final Batch
  • Black Knights' Fortress and Dragon Slayer II have been fully added to Quest Speedrunning Worlds.
  • A Diamond time has been added to all quests in Quest Speedrunning. This doesn't give points but instead awards you a Diamond Trophy item for your main save. This is only equippable if you've completed the Diamond time for every available quest.
Other Changes
  • Party leaders in Tombs of Amascut can now promote other members of the party while the group is forming in the lobby.
  • Two new options have been added to the Settings menu's Chat section, allowing players to have permanently banned and permanently muted accounts removed from their Ignore lists. This check runs once per day.
  • It's no longer possible to redeem a Bond in the last three minutes before a server reboot.
  • Improved the wander range of brown bears, rogues and bandits within the Wilderness.
  • Changed the Desert Protection bonuses of various items.
  • Damage in Wintertodt will now visibly interrupt Fletching animations.
  • The grey, teal, yellow, purple and red boots are no longer members-only items, for consistency with the gloves from the same Canifis shop. Bring on your best fashionscape!
  • The Cemetery Teleport spell no longer pops up its Wilderness warning when clicked unless you're actually able to cast the spell, so misclicks will be less disruptive.
  • When using a gold bar on a furnace, you will no longer need to confirm you want to craft a Gold Tiara if the only mould you have on you is a tiara mould.
  • A typo has been corrected in the Curse of the Empty Lord miniquest journal.
  • A graphical issue with the 10th Birthday Balloons has now been fixed.
Golden Gnomes
  • Don't forget, we're hosting the 12th Annual Golden Gnomes on Twitch at 17:00, Friday March 24th!
PvP Rota

The PvP rota has moved to Period B:
  • 560 - (UK) - PvP World
  • 579 - (US) - High-Risk PvP World
  • 561 - (UK) - Free-to-Play PvP World
  • 580 - (US) - LMS Competitive

World 390 (AUS) for LMS Competitive has been de-activated with this rota.

The PvP Arena is using 'Zerker' loadouts in Ranked Duels and Tournaments this week.
Quest Speedrunning Final Batch
Dragon Slayer II and Black Knights' Fortress are now out of Beta and ready for you on Quest Speedrunning Worlds!

That will be the last of our promised Quest Speedrunning updates, but don’t worry, we'll still be adding more in the future, just at less regular intervals.

Quest Speedrunning Worlds allow you to replay some of Old School's most iconic quests with the aim of completing them as quickly as possible. You're given stats and any items required for each quest and will earn points depending on how quickly you finish. As you might expect, faster times (such as Platinum or Diamond times) reward more points, which can be exchanged for main-game cosmetics such as the Adventurer's outfit or Speedy teleport Scroll - just visit Eliza in Varrock Square to claim your fast fashionscape!

If you're looking for some handy resources to help get you started, we'd recommend checking out the OSRS Wiki page (where you can even find speedrun guides for each of the quests) or the Quest Speedrunning Discord.

As an extra twist, we've added Diamond Times to all the current quests available on QSR Worlds. These don't offer any additional points but achieving all of the Diamond times on every available quest will snag you an exclusive Diamond Trophy for your main account.

A hefty prize for the fastest runners among you. It looks pretty heavy - hopefully, you've been working on those arms alongside your speedrun cardio!

This item can be equipped, so you can really flex how fast of a spacebar speedster you truly are. In the manner of Quest Cape, Music Cape and other similar items, when new content is released you'll need to achieve any new Diamond Times in order to equip the item. Good luck!

Finally, we've introduced some techniques to prevent players getting a headstart on speedruns by performing actions before the quest begins. Namely, ashes and hunter traps can no longer be obtained by lighting a fire or placing a hunter trap before starting your run - meaning you'll have to route them into your run instead!

Two new options have been added to the Settings menu's Chat section, allowing players to have permanently banned and permanently muted accounts removed from their Ignore lists.

The option for removing banned accounts is enabled by default, whereas the option for removing muted accounts is disabled by default. The check runs quietly once per day, rather than checking continually, so as to avoid excessive load on the chat system.

We've also got a few smaller changes to finish:
  • Party leaders in Tombs of Amascut can now promote other members of the party while the group is forming in the lobby.
  • It's no longer possible to redeem a Bond in the last three minutes before a server reboot.
  • We've improved the wander range of brown bears, rogues and bandits within the Wilderness. This should make it easier to use your Dwarf multicannon and/or Ice barrage for some of your Wilderness Slayer tasks.

Final Poll 78 Changes | Weekly Game Update (March 15th)

This week’s update includes the last of the Poll 78 changes, some Group Ironman fixes, and improvements to PvP!

Poll 78
The last of the improvements you voted for in Poll 78 are live this week!

Firstly, we’ve launched a bunch of improvements to the Motherlode Mine:
  • Adjusted the respawn rate of veins on the upper and lower levels.
  • Added more veins to the southern area of the Mine.
  • Added a Level 54 Agility shortcut between the Bank and the southern part of the mine.

While we’re on the subject of Mining, we’ve also renamed Mining nodes throughout the game to indicate which ore they contain. No more hours spent right-clicking and identifying! Accordingly, the Tutorial Island dialogue will no longer refer to prospecting.

Poll enthusiasts will be happy to hear that we’re finalising the questions for Poll 79 this week. While you wait, we can tell you that Poll 79 will include a question about reworking Combat Achievements as a points-based system, giving you the freedom to mix and match your Achievements instead of having to complete every tier. It’s exciting stuff, so keep an eye out for the blog!

Group Ironman Fixes
• Group Ironman Storage will now be locked 10 minutes before a game update reboot, minimising the chance that transactions are prematurely cancelled and items lost.
  • The Ironman Tutor will now pay attention if you previously indicated you never wanted to downgrade while informing you about Iron mode. He’s also got more information to share about Unranked Group Ironmen!
  • Group sizes for ranked GIM now correctly reflect the largest group players have been a part of.
  • A few GIM Combat Achievements were erroneously being counted toward the total number in the interface. This was a purely visual bug, but it has now been fixed.

Wilderness and PvP-related Changes
• After considering player feedback, we’ve made environmental changes to the area outside Venenatis’ lair to prevent abuse of the nearby single-way combat zone:
    • The entrance to the lair now faces west instead of south.
    • Added trees immediately behind the entrance to prevent Ranged and Magic attacks from the single-way combat area.
  • Wilderness monsters on the permanent Deadman World now have the chance to drop an Imbue Scroll along with their other loot, providing an alternative means to imbue items on this world. The chance is higher for higher-level monsters.
  • Target worlds no longer have misleading messages about the non-existence of PJ timers.

12th Annual Golden Gnomes
Voting for the 12th Annual Golden Gnomes has now closed - tune in on March 24th to find out who will be taking home a coveted Golden Gnome trophy!

We'll be streaming the event live from JagexHQ - another Studio stream! The Event kicks off at 17:00 on the Jagex Twitch channel. We look forward to seeing you there!

Other Changes
• The Birthday Event has now been removed. Thanks to everyone who participated! Time to start planning the 11th Birthday Event…
  • A new option has been added to the Controls section of the Settings menu, which allows you to toggle whether the Trade option is shown on other players.
  • The Poison/Venom timer will now only reset after 54 seconds of being out of combat, up from 18 seconds. This should help Poison Dynamite to function until a more definitive fix is implemented.
  • We’ve learned that the pathfinding changes for Bankers from last week’s update are not behaving as intended in certain circumstances. Consequently, we’ve reverted the changes until we’ve reviewed this feature and ensured it works as planned.
    • The change remains in place for Herman Caranos.
  • The Varrock Armour's smelting boost once again works with Perfect Gold Ore.
  • Loot in an instanced King Black Dragon lair now stays on the ground for longer, as in most other boss instances.
  • Fixed a typo in the Ecumenical Key’s Examine text.
  • Removed extraneous quote marks that appeared on the Prayers' mouseover text.
  • You now get full experience for cutting teaks and mahogany trees on Etceteria.
  • Chat messages from a Player Moderator or Jagex Moderator can now be right-clicked to learn more information about what the crown icons mean, including a link to a webpage which explains in greater detail.

Crack the Clue Hints
Woox is back with another couple of helpful hints. The first hint is for the clue obtained outside Lumbridge Castle. The second hint is the clue obtained inside the Stronghold of Security.

Happy hunting, we'll be back next week with more if it looks like you could use a helping hand!

The PvP Arena is using 'Max/Med' loadouts in Ranked Duels and Tournaments this week.
