Poll 74

Between all the excitement over Steam we’ve also squeezed in a few of the changes you voted for in Poll #74!

Amulet of Blood Fury

You can now charge Amulets of Blood Fury for up to 30,000 hits instead of just 10,000 – although newly created amulets will still start with 10,000 charges.

To add more, you’ll need to use a blood shard on the amulet you want to charge. This will add 10,000 charges at a time.

Precise Kill Times

You now have the option to display your exact completion and kill times, based on the game cycle they were completed on.

If you prefer to keep things simple, you can still choose to round your completion and kill times to the nearest second. You can find the toggle in the Chat section of the Settings Menu.

Nightmare Parasites

The Nightmare’s parasites will now heal her for a random number of hitpoints within a more consistent range.

Previously, the parasites could heal between 1 and 80 hitpoints. Now, the range is between 31 and 50. This should remove the frustration of constantly rolling high heals, without diminishing the challenge of the fight.

Last Man Standing

We’ve added some new items to Last Man Standing! You can now find the Volatile Nightmare Staff, the Ancestral Hat, and the full set of Dharok’s gear to aid you in your battle.

In addition, you can now change the colour of the fog. The UI will also inform you if you are in danger.

Official Merch Store

Don’t forget, you can still celebrate our 8th Birthday with the commemorative range from Angels Scapes! The oldest fans among you will remember Tim and Crunchy, who’ve been lovingly rendered in antique nickel for this stained glass pin. If you want to take them home, be sure to pre-order here!

If you’re looking for some limited edition goodies, look no further than the special 8th Birthday Nieve pin and the classy matte gold Dragonfire Shield pin. Plus, the King Black Dragon keyring is here to keep watch over your lair.

Next up, bring a taste of Zanaris to your door with the limited edition Fairy Queen pin and the Framed Zanaris Picture pin – it’s our first ever collab with Legends Arts! If you’re feeling a bit more down to earth, the Herblore Skill Cape keyring is also in stock.

Lastly, here’s some very exciting news: a new Old School RuneScape soundtrack album is now available, featuring tracks from our very own Ian Taylor and Mod Ash!

You can listen to Old School Combat Classics right now on all leading streaming services, including Spotify, or pre-order this nostalgic 18-track album from our friends at Laced Records. All pre-orders come with a free MP3 download, so you can listen on the go!

The album is available on both 180g vinyl, in a stylish orange and red pattern, and CD! The deluxe gatefold sleeve features all-new artwork of Jad on the inside – and the front and back covers feature iconic weapons from the game and Barrows equipment arranged in the Combat Triangle.

For full details of where else you can purchase or stream this album digitally, check out Laced’s FAQ page. Or, to see all the soundtracks we’ve released so far, make your way to our Spotify , where you can find a selection of playlists.

By the way, if you’re a content creator, you’ll be happy to know that this soundtrack release shouldn’t affect your ability to use RuneScape music in streams or in YouTube videos. If you do have any issues using our music, let us know at [email protected].

The Old School Team

Shooting Stars Poll Blog

We're always tinkering with Old School, not least with our monthly Old School 'Ideation Days' where the J-Mods get busy pitching, designing and even prototyping possible new game content. In December's Gazette we highlighted a few of these pitches, and we explained the process in more detail last March.

The fruits of these endeavours have previously resulted in recreations of RuneScape adventures with a magical Old School feel. Seasoned players may remember our intensive work to recreate the Corporeal Beast (2014) and Grand Exchange (2015). Since then we've received additional support from our internal tools team making it much easier to essentially port game content from RuneScape to Old School. That's what led to Soul Wars!

Alongside Soul Wars, one of our J-Mods also set about trying to re-create Shooting Stars, which originally came to RuneScape back in 2008. Working on both projects side-by-side allowed us to learn as much as possible about backporting game content (especially as Shooting Stars spans most of the game world). Our recreations aren't simply like-for-like ports, though - as with the Soul Wars release, it's our intention to address any criticisms of Shooting Stars and resolve them in a uniquely Old School way. It's this Old School-ified version that we're hoping to poll soon and that journey continues with this blog!

We last spoke about Shooting Stars in September, outlining lots of Old School-friendly tweaks such as removing the daily aspect, rebalancing the rewards, adding more landing sites and throwing in some extra F2P elements too.

The same survey also mentioned the minigames Stealing Creation and Fist of Guthix, but the reason we're offering Shooting Stars now is because we've already got the game content working!

Most of the 6,000ish respondents (around 75.65%, to be exact) said they were interested in learning more, and in a Q&A livestream last week we were asked for an update. Having explained the headline changes we hoped to make, we then ran a short poll in the livestream chat, and the results looked very encouraging at 79% Yes! Coupled with the survey responses, it looks like the time is right to blog and poll Shooting Stars!

Shooting Stars

So, here's the concept in a nutshell: Shooting Stars fall on Gielinor and players are able to mine them for XP and rewards. Players use telescopes to figure out when and where they might land.

On every world, a Shooting Star will fall at a random spot selected from a predetermined list roughly every two hours (with a variation of up to 15 minutes to stop them being too predictable).
A Star (Hunter) Is Born
A lot of you will find Stars by just happening upon them on your travels. However, dedicated hunters can use the telescope in their Player Owned House to determine the rough landing location of the next one. Different telescopes will offer varying levels of accuracy.

Sounds easy? Actually, your telescopes will only point to the general region where a Star will fall, so you still need to find the exact spot.
F2P
Shooting Stars was originally for RuneScape members only, but in Old School they will land on F2P worlds too. However, without access to a telescope, players will have to find Stars by chance. Additionally, Stars may still land in non-F2P areas on F2P worlds, rendering them out of reach.

Stars will offer 50% of the usual value (including the bonus for finding them) on F2P worlds, and as the Reward Shop is not available, XP will be the only benefit. However, Stardust (see next section) will still be given on F2P worlds. It's a good idea to save it up ready to be used should you ever decide to become a member!
Mining Stars
Once a Star has landed, it is ready to be mined. The first player to mine a Star will receive bonus Mining XP equal to their Mining Level x60 (so if you're 82 Mining, you'll get 4,920 XP).

The bonus Mining XP for mining a Star in the original RuneScape was x75 - for balancing reasons we've lowered this for Old School.

The landing times of the last five Stars will also be listed on a board in the Observatory, along with the names of the players that found them.

Fallen Stars come in nine different sizes, and a Star can be any size when it lands. Each has a different Mining Level requirement calculated at the size x10.

Mining any Star will reward players with Stardust, an untradeable currency that can be used to purchase a variety of untradeable rewards. Each size can be mined for a different amount, and once depleted it will shrink to a smaller size. Every time some Stardust is mined, Mining XP is awarded.

Poll Question #1

Should we add the Shooting Stars skilling activity, as described in the dev blog?

Rewards
In addition to all the lovely Mining XP, players can also use their Stardust to buy rewards! Once a Star is fully depleted, it will open to reveal a new NPC - a Star Sprite, who will happily take your Stardust in exchange for items.

In RuneScape's original release, the reward system was very different. Players could only have up to 200 Stardust at once and could only trade it once per day. Our players aren't so keen on mechanics that make tasks feel like a daily chore, so the limit on Stardust has been removed and the old rewards have been replaced with a Reward Shop.

Items you can buy from the Shop are untradeable and include:

Celestial Ring

This ring will give a hidden Mining boost of +4 when worn. This stacks with other invisible boosts. It will also be chargeable with Stardust. Each Stardust will add one charge up to a max of 10,000 charges. When charged, the ring will have a 1/10 chance of giving an extra ore when mining, and this extra ore will reward the normal XP amount when mined. Extra ore can emerge at any rock where the Mining Skillcape has a chance of giving it. Every time ore is mined from a suitable rock, a charge will be lost from the ring.

Poll Question #2

If Shooting Stars is added, should we add the Celestial Ring as a reward which offers a hidden Mining boost?

Poll Question #3

If the Celestial Ring is added as a reward, should it offer a 1/10 chance at obtaining extra ore when mining?

Star Fragment

These can be used on any piece of the Prospector Outfit to recolour it gold.

Poll Question #4

If Shooting Stars is added, should we add the Star Fragment as a reward which will allow you to recolour your Prospector Outfit?

Bag Full of Gems

These will work the same as any other Bag Full of Gems.

Poll Question #5

If Shooting Stars is added, should we add the Bag Full of Gems as a reward? These will work as any other Bag Full of Gems.

Soft Clay Pack

These will work the same as any other Soft Clay Pack.

Poll Question #6

If Shooting Stars is added, should we add the Soft Clay Pack as a reward? This will work like any other Soft Clay Pack.

Essence Pack

These are new items that will give 100 Pure Essence when opened..

8th Birthday Event - Old School RuneScape Weekly Update (17th Feb)
Birthday Event
Old School RuneScape is eight years old this month! And what a journey it’s been – what started out as a bit of nostalgia has evolved to become so much more, and it’s all thanks to our brilliant community (and our brilliant devs, of course!)

But we’re not the only ones celebrating. Duke Horacio of Lumbridge is throwing a birthday bash, and he’s decided to invite the monkeys from Ape Atoll. Unfortunately, all the excitement has sent them absolutely bananas and they’ve started to take over the town!

Ready to go ape? Then head to Lumbridge and have a word with the duke. Putting a stop to this monkey business will get you a Cursed Banana, a new wearable item that will see you monkeying around in style, and members can also enjoy the dapper Banana Cape, which comes with its very own emote featuring one of the mischievous monkeys.

Last Man Standing
As promised in our Minigame Quality of Life poll, we’re introducing a new map to the Last Man Standing map pool: Wild Varrock.

Wild Varrock is an alternative version of the iconic city that exists on another plane. It was discovered by a Guthixian mage keen to find new and exciting places to host their Last Man Standing competition.

Ever wondered what the world would be like if Arrav had never saved Varrock from the calamity at the end of the 4th Age? Well, now’s your chance to find out!

In addition, the following Last Man Standing items have been added to the Collection Log:

  • Halos
  • Deadman Armour
  • Swift Blade
  • Guthixian Icon
  • Special Attack recolours
  • Victor’s Capes
  • Weapon paints and upgrade kits
  • Granite Ornament and Handle

Only untradeable items will be unlocked automatically if you owned them prior to this week’s update – the tradeable ones will only be checked off once you’ve purchased them from the Last Man Standing Reward Store.

We’ve also made the following changes:

  • Free-to-play worlds will no longer have the option to play Competitive LMS
  • The default Last Man Standing map has been renamed ‘Deserted Island’
  • Numerous textual fixes for Deserted Island
  • Added a new loot crate model and animation
  • Loot chests will no longer visually open unless you have a key, but their functionality remains the same

Lastly, we’ve implemented a new system that we hope will make Last Man Standing more enjoyable.

For each game of Last Man Standing that a player leaves before the match has finished, they’ll receive a strike. After three strikes, they’ll be banned from joining Competitive and High Stakes games until the next day. During the daily reset, two strikes will be removed from their account – so if they were banned on Monday, come Tuesday they’ll still have one strike left over.

If you’re at risk of a temporary ban, you’ll receive increasingly prominent warnings upon entering the lobbies.

No matter how high your strike count is, you’ll always be able to access Casual games of Last Man Standing.

Of course, we’ll be monitoring this new system closely and making tweaks as necessary to ensure that we’re reducing abusive behaviour with minimal impact on legitimate players.

We know you want more from LMS – and we want to do more with LMS! But before we can do that, we need to ensure that the games run smoothly, that the new map feels good to play, and that the impact of those abusing this minigame for profit is limited. As you can see, we’re making changes to try and resolve all three issues, so bear with us and remember that the best is yet to come!

Merch
Dust devils aren’t the only reason to wear a facemask! Our Official Merch Store has just been updated with these Old School-style face coverings to wear on your AFK adventures.

And don’t forget, you can still pre-order the 20th Anniversary Tutorial Island Pin. Keen-eyed pin collectors will also be pleased to see that the RuneScape Classic Logo pin and the Mini Runes collection are now in stock!

Oh, and keep those eyes peeled – there’s even more anniversary merch coming soon.
PvP World Rota
The PvP world rota has moved to Period B.

  • The host for the High-Risk PvP world will be W337 (US East)
  • The host for the Standard PvP world will be W325 (UK)
  • The host for the free-to-play PvP world, W371 (UK)
  • The members-only LMS world will be W492 (US East)
  • The free-to-play LMS world will be W326 (UK)
Patch Notes
• You’ll no longer be interrupted when Fishing for raw rainbow fish.
  • The ability to configure the "Function" button on mobile within the settings interface has been added.
  • A new shortcut has been added to the cliff in Viyeldi Caves. To use it, you’ll need 91 Agility and completion of Legends Quest, along with a one-time long rope, purchasable from the Darkmeyer General Store.
  • The ‘Doorways’ music track hint now mentions ‘north-east Varrock’ instead of ‘east of Edgeville’.
  • You will no longer drop food and potions on the ground as a supply pile if you’re in an instanced area. The supplies will now move to the gravestone, as other items do.
  • The Nightmare Staff Special Attack bar will no longer drain after attacking a higher level Slayer monster.
  • A typo in the Lil’ Creator’s examine text has been fixed.
  • You can now reclaim your Magical Orb from Zavistic Rarve if you lose it during the Hand in the Sand quest.
  • The High Stakes Last Man Standing cash reward chest has been restored to Ferox Enclave, and can be found on the bottom floor of the minigames building.

The Old School Team

Below Ice Mountain

Welcome to Below Ice Mountain, a new novice free-to-play quest! This adventure will see you unearthing the ancient secrets that lie hidden, errr... below Ice Mountain. Completion of the quest will grant access to the Ice Mountain Dungeon, a new free-to-play area packed with combat opportunities, skilling activities and lots of lovely lore. If you enjoyed the fearsome Forthos Dungeon, this is a must-play.

We're hoping to poll the content either this week or next, but that all depends on your initial feedback. So, give the blog a read and share your thoughts!

If the content passes, we hope to release it some time in April. It's a bit of a wait, but there's plenty to keep you going in March, including TzHaar-Ket-Rak's 6 Jad Challenge, the Easter holiday event, Tempoross (the Fishing Skilling Boss) and other, smaller updates!

We'll be hosting an additional livestream this to cover any questions about the content in this blog. So, in addition to Thursday's regular Q&A, you can join us tomorrow (Wednesday 17th) at 5pm GMT!
Changelog and Feedback (Updated 18/02/21)
What You Said

What We're Doing

You liked the proposed bolt pouch changes, but you wanted us to look at changing the way the bolt pouch handles stored bolts on death.

We've added a poll question asking whether you'd like us to change the way it handles bolts on death to be more in like with other storage items.

You want to see the Ice Giant boss!

We love the Ice Giant boss proposal. Below Ice Mountain doesn't mean we can't ever add other icy F2P content. It's just that this is coming first. We'd prefer to keep Ice Mountain and the Asgarnian Ice Dungeon separate too.

The Barronite Mace is stronger than the Rune Scimitar despite us stating otherwise.

We've tweaked its general stats to be worse than the Rune Scimitar. We've also added a slight Prayer bonus for consistency with other maces. With its golembane effect we're happy with its positioning.

You wanted to know what's going to happen to the Barronite Mace when dying in the Wilderness.

We've clarified that it's going to function similarly to other untradeable items, like the Fire cape.

Some of you felt that we should look to add F2P Ranged or Magic equipment rather than Melee equipment.

We're certainly open to adding Ranged and Magic equipment in future! Perhaps it could come from the Ice Giant boss... We'd love to see your ideas.

You'd like to see the Dwarven hammer occupy the off-hand slot so it could function alongside other equipment, like Amy's saw.

Sadly this isn't doable without significant behind-the-scenes work. We're not ruling it out as one for the future, but it won't be offered here.

You wanted to know whether the Dwarven hammer is storable in the PoH, and whether it's possible to use the hammer in places like Barbarian Assault.

We've clarified that it is storable, and it can be used everywhere an ordinary hammer can be used.

You liked seeing the inclusion of concept art, but wanted more assurance of how we'd interpret concept art in terms of in-game models.

There's a great point! Concept art is not final, it's used to help guided our environment and character artists. You can find a WIP of the walking golem model: here.

You were concerned that the content could be prone to botting.

We've added a 16 Quest Point requirement to begin Below Ice Mountain to help mitigate botting access, and naturally we'll ban bots too!

The name Bannite is very similar to Banite in RuneScape (3).

This is entirely coincidental. We're going to change the name to avoid confusion! We asked for some suggestions on the livestream, and we opted for Barronite.

Some of you liked the idea of an alternative method for training Prayer, especially in F2P, but you felt that the XP rates given for Fishing and Cooking would change established efficient methods too much and would lead to too many players to be concentrated in one space.

We're reducing the Fishing and Cooking XP granted to emphasize that Prayer is the main training method for this activity.

There were lots of questions about the Golem Cores activity, and its impact on efficiency.

We've clarified that each core is equivalent to 10 runes, and offered expected cores per hour.

Below Ice Mountain

Willow, an energetic archaeologist (perhaps suspiciously so) is hunting for her next big discovery. She believes she has found the entrance to ancient underground ruins found to the west of Ice Mountain. There's a catch though - the entrance is sealed tight and she needs to re-unite her old crew to help her break in. Naturally, she has to stay close to the ruins in order to lay claim to the find, so it falls to you to bring her rag-tag group back together for one last caper and a final big pay-off.

Burntof is an old dwarf with a penchant for demolition, Checkal is a well-built lifter of heavy things and Marley is a cunning thief with a knack for disarming traps.

Together, they have the talents it will take to gain entry to the secret ruins. But persuading them might not be easy. See, the gang aren't all too keen on working with Willow again, and her intentions might not be as honourable as she claims...
Requirements and Rewards (Spoiler Warning)
Since this is a novice quest aimed at free-to-play adventurers, there aren't many requirements. You'll need 16 Quest Points to begin the quest. 10 Mining will definitely come in handy for a tricky encounter, but it's by no means necessary.

Completing the quest will yield the following rewards:
1 Quest Point
2,000 Coins
Access to the Ice Mountain Dungeon

As you can see, it's not too challenging!

Poll Question #1

Should we add the Below Ice Mountain quest? This will be a new free-to-play quest that unlocks Ice Mountain Dungeon.

Ice Mountain Dungeon
These ruins are packed with lore, but we're keeping those cards very close to our chest for the moment. You won't find spoilers here - we think you should uncover its secrets by yourself (or wait for the very talented Wiki team to do it for you)!

Before we go into detail about content, here's a little insight into our design goals. We wanted to:

  • Create a new free-to-play dungeon to accompany the Below Ice Mountain quest
  • Provide some new and interesting free-to-play and early game training methods
  • Offer a clear glimpse of progression for free-to-play adventurers which teases the type of content that members get to enjoy
What To Do In The Ruins
Lore and secrets is great, sure, but what if we were to break down the core loop of the gameplay on offer? And what if we were to do it without giving away any of the incredible narrative that awaits? Sounds like fun! Let's do it.

Within the ruins is a great forge powered using Barronite, a unique material that can only found here. Somebody within the ruins believes it is their duty to keep the forge lit, lest the flame diminish forever. This somebody is perhaps a few years past their prime and, with failing eyesight, will reward anybody who helps to gather vital Barronite.

There are a range of rewards for handing over the Barronite, mostly notable of which is access to the vault. What's so exciting about this vault? Well, it contains many treasures belonging to the old inhabits of the ruins, and they are all yours for the taking! However, to get the lock open you'll need to offer Barronite every time you want to enter.

Barronite can be gathered while skilling within the ruins, so you'll be gaining XP as you go. The skilling activities are primarily aimed at low-ish level free-to-play adventurers with the intention of filling notable gaps in free-to-play skilling. Let's take a look at some of them:
Religious Offerings (Prayer)
The caves deep below Ice Mountain are home to various rare cave fish. In ancient times, it was tradition for these fish to be used as religious offerings.

Players can offer cave fish within the ruins to train their Prayer skill. You'll need to perform the same ritual used by the long departed inhabitants of the ruins:

Step 1: Fishing

Players can use a net to catch cave fish within the ruins.

  • Raw Guppy requirements:
    • Fishing Level 7
    • A small net
    • (Free-to-play)
  • Raw Cavefish requirements:
    • Fishing Level 20
    • A small net
    • (Free-to-play)
  • Raw Tetra requirements:
    • Fishing Level 33
    • A small net
    • (Free-to-play)
  • Raw Catfish requirements:
    • Fishing Level 46
    • A big net
    • (Members-only)

Players will also sometimes find Barronite when fishing. Plus, there's a rare chance of catching a Barronite Handle (see below). The fish caught here cannot be traded.

Step 2: Cooking

With fish in your net, players will need to use a knife at the old preparation tables to prep it. But be careful how you cook, budding chefs - it's possible to mess up and ruin the fish. The chance of failure is dependent on your Cooking level, so bring your culinary A-game!

  • Guppy requirements:
    • Cooking Level 7
    • (Free-to-play)
  • Cavefish requirements:
    • Cooking Level 20
    • (Free-to-play)
  • Tetra requirements:
    • Cooking Level 33
    • (Free-to-play)
  • Catfish requirements:
    • Cooking Level 46
    • (Members-only)

The prepared fish cannot be traded.

Step 3: Prayer

With your fish prepared, it's time to make an offering at an ancient altar and train that Prayer skill!

Fishing XP Rates

Naturally, the rates here are subject to further balancing and feedback. These proposed rates are based on the notion that players might catch 300 fish per hour, which is based on the number of fish caught at the required Fishing level. It's worth noting that the per inventory/hour rates here are assuming the same fish will be caught, cooked, and offered. In reality you'll catch a mixture of fish types.

These proposed rates are based on the notion that players might catch 1000 fish per hour, or cook 1000 per hour, or offer 2000 per hour (which we anticipate to be close to the maximum rate obtainable) which is based on the number of fish caught at a higher Fishing level. It's worth noting that the per inventory/hour rates here are assuming the same fish will be caught, cooked, and offered. In reality you'll catch a mixture of fish types.

Poll Question #2

If Below Ice Mountain is added, should we add the Religious Offerings skilling activity, as described in the dev blog?
Golem Cores (Runecraft)
The old inhabitants of the ruins controlled Golems, programming them to do many tasks. The Golems were fuelled by runic energies and imbued with the power of the Body and Mind altars. It was hoped that they would one day become more self-sufficient and be freed of the requirement for programming - but the magical arts are never predictable. The unstable energies of the nearby Chaos altar slowly seeped in the Golem Cores, corrupting them and filling them with uncontrollable power. So, the dangerous Golems were sealed away in the ruins for good.

Players can hunt and kill Golems within the ruins. When defeated, they will sometimes drop their corrupted Cores, which can be used at the relevant Runecraft altar to gain XP and runes.

Step 1 - Combat

Players can find the following golems in the ruins:

  • Flawed Golem – Level 13
    • Doesn’t drop Cores
    • (Free-to-play)
  • Mind Golem – Level 30
    • Drops a Mind Core when killed
    • (Free-to-play)
  • Body Golem – Level 50
    • Drops a Body Core when killed
    • (Free-to-play)
  • Chaos Golem – Level 70
    • Drops a Chaos Core when killed
    • (Members)

Killing golems will sometimes yield Barronite, too, and there's a rare chance they'll drop a Barronite Pommel (see below). The golem cores cannot be traded.

Step 2 - Runecrafting

Players can use the Cores gathered from killing Golems to train their Runecraft skill, offering them at the relevant Runecraft altar for XP and runes. Each Core offers more XP and runes than a single essence, meaning fewer trips to the altar. However, this benefit is offset by the time it takes to obtain the Cores. We estimate that the time spent killing a moss giant is comparable to the time spent killing a golem.

We estimate that an average F2P player with 40 combat might kill one golem each minute. A higher level F2P player, with 80+ combat stats, might kill three golems per minute (resulting in approximately 30 cores per hour). We estimate that the maximum obtainable rate of cores F2P might be 40 cores per hour.

10 Runes are given for converting a Core. This number is then multiplied by the usual Runecraft level modifiers. So, for example, at level 46 Runecraft a Body Core will give 20 Runes instead. The experience given is measured per rune and is the same as normal Runecraft. For example, if a Core gives 10 Body Runes, it will offer 75 Runecraft XP (10 * 7.5). Using a Core has the same Runecraft requirement as using essence, and like Runecrafting, level multipliers will not give increased experience.

Naturally, the rates here are subject to further balancing and feedback. Here's a breakdown of Runecraft experience per Core that a F2P player with 80+ combat might see:

Poll Question #3

If Below Ice Mountain is added, should we add the Golem Cores skilling activity, as described in the dev blog?
Gathering Relics (Mining and Smithing)
Players can mine Barronite rocks to find (you guessed it) Barronite and (you guessed it again) Barronite deposits. These deposits can be smelted down to gain additional Barronite and Ancient Relics.

Step 1 - Mining

Barronite rocks can be tackled at 15 Mining. Mining here will work similarly to the upper level ore veins in Motherlode Mine (ensuring the rocks can be worked in groups).

Players will get around 25 XP per Barronite mined, and finding a deposit will yield some additional XP.

Step 2 - Smithing

Players with 15 Smithing can break down Barronite deposits with a hammer at anvils, and obtain various items:

  • Barronite (common)
  • Ancient Relic (uncommon)
  • Barronite Head (rare)
  • Broken Barronite Hammer (rare + members-only)

Ancient Relics can be handed in at the Varrock Museum for coins. In addition, members also get Kudos for the first Relic they hand in! The Barronite Head and Broken Barronite Hammer, meanwhile, can be made into new items (see below).

When Smithing, players will get around 500 XP per deposit. We're expecting players to smith between 10-20 deposits per hour.

Poll Question #4

If Below Ice Mountain is added, should we add the Gathering Relics skilling activity, as described in the dev blog?
The Vault
The Vault is a new minigame found within the ruins - just hand in your Barronite to gain access! As we mentioned above, this vault was used by the ancient inhabitants of the ruins to store treasure, so it's well worth a gander. But there's a catch. Each payment of Barronite allows one entry into the vault, and players only get a limited time inside before they are forced out by the ancient security systems.

The vault itself is maze-like, and home to many chests. Players get one minute to loot as many chests as possible and then reach the exit. If the player doesn't make it out in time, all the precious bounty will be lost!

Making things even more challenging, the locations of chests - and the loot within them - will be randomised. Similarly, doors will at times be blocked off, forcing the player to think fast and dash down alternative paths.

Loot will consist of gems, gold and alchables worth a small amount of money. Here's a look at other comparable low level money-making activities:

  • Killing hill giants
  • Crafting diamond jewellery
  • Mining coal

Of course, not all chests offer the same rewards. Chests deeper in the vault offer more loot, but will take longer to reach and pose a riskier escape:

  • Easy Chest - 200 GP per chest
  • Medium Chest - 500 GP per chest
  • Hard Chest - 1,500 GP per chest

Players will be able to stack Barronite payments to make Vault entry more convenient. So for example, a player could pay for 20 entries in a single transaction.

Poll Question #5

If Below Ice Mountain is added, should we add the Vault minigame, as described in the dev blog?
Other Rewards
In addition to all of the above, we'd also like to offer new, unique rewards!

Barronite Mace

A mace that was once used by the ancient inhabitants of the ruins. Players need to find three components:

  • Barronite Handle - found while hunting for cave fish
  • Barronite Pommel - dropped by Golems when killed
  • Barronite Head - found while breaking down Barronite deposits

Once you have all three components, a character within the ruins will tell you how to combine them to finish the Barronite Mace (you'll also need some Barronite, obviously - the clue's in the name!). The mace will be positioned slightly below the Rune Scimitar. It's a useful crush weapon for low to mid levels, and requires 40 Attack.

The mace also comes with a unique effect - it's a golembane weapon. That means this weapon will provide extra accuracy and damage when fighting Golems!

As the item is untradeable we expect it to behave similarly to items like the Fire cape on death.

Here are the proposed stats for the mace (subject to balancing and feedback).
On the left: stats as used against any non-golem enemy - without the golembane effect.
On the right stats as used against golems - with the golembane effect.

Poll Question #6

If Below Ice Mountain is added, should we add the Barronite Mace weapon, as described in the dev blog?

Dwarven Hammer

This is a members-only wieldable hammer that was once used as Smithing equipment by ancient dwarves. It's been a while since it has been much use to anyone, so you will first need to find the busted version while breaking down Barronite deposits. A character within the ruins will then tell you how to repair it.

It will function as a normal hammer when skilling, but because it can be equipped, it frees up an inventory slot. Note that the hammer has no combat stats when equipped.

Poll Question #7

If Below Ice Mountain is added, should we add the Dwarven Hammer skilling item, as described in the dev blog?
Ruins-Specific Buffs
Players will also be able to spend Barronite to unlock various buffs and effects that work only within the ruins:
  • Increased catch rate for fishing
  • Decreased failure chance when preparing fish
  • Reduced damage from golem attacks
  • Increased chance of obtaining Barronite deposits
  • Increased chance of finding mace components and the broken hammer
  • A one hour buff to the dungeon that increases the success chance of all activities

Poll Question #8

If Below Ice Mountain is added, should we add Ruin Area buffs as a reward which increase your skilling efforts within the Ice Mountain Dungeon?
Bolt Pouch Proposal
We'd like to propose updating the Bolt Pouch interface. We're offering to convert it to a new-look, much more user-friendly format.

Here are the benefits of the change:

  • You no longer need to right-click an item in the pouch to remove it - you can simply left-click/tap.
  • To wear bolts from the pouch, just drag and drop them into the current ammo slot.
  • There is a new slot in the pouch named 'Extra Ammo'. This shows up in your worn equipment tab above your normal ammo. You're then able to left-click/tap to switch between your worn bolts and extra bolts, allowing you to easily switch between bolts without the need to open the pouch itself. It also means fewer clicks to switch ammo!
  • In addition to the interface changes we'd also like to propose changing the way the Bolt Pouch functions when dying. Currently all stored bolts are destroyed. We'd like to propose that we change the Bolt Pouch to work similarly to items like the Seed Box. Upon death to an NPC, the Bolt Pouch can be picked up with no stored bolts being destroyed. If the player dies below level 20 Wilderness, it will drop to the ground, along with all of its contents. If the player dies above level 20 Wilderness, it will be dropped as 1 coin and all of its contents will be destroyed.

And here's how it'll look!

Poll Question #9

Should we update the Bolt Pouch interface to a more user-friendly format, as described in the dev blog?

Poll Question #10

Should we update the Bolt Pouch so that stored contents behave similarly on death to items like the Seed box?

Isle of Souls - Old School RuneScape Weekly Update (3rd Feb)

Old School RuneScape is updated weekly! Here are the patch notes for this week's content update.

Isle of Souls

Following last month’s poll, the Isle of Souls has been expanded to include new areas, amenities, and monsters. Shall we go on a tour?
Monsters and Amenities
The following amenities can now be found on the Isle of Souls:
  • Trees: maple, yew, teak and mahogany
  • Rocks: clay, copper, tin, iron, silver, gold, coal and mithril
  • Fishing spots: net/harpoon, net/bait and cage/harpoon
  • Hunter spots: crimson swifts, copper longtails and grey chinchompas
  • Flax
  • Water source
  • An anvil
  • Rare impling spawn

To make use of all those resources, you’ll have the option to build both a spinning wheel and a pottery wheel.

There’s also three new Clue Scroll steps pointing to locations on the island.

In addition, the following monsters are now roaming the island:

  • Sand crabs
  • Moss giants
  • Pyrefiends
  • Pyrelords
  • Cows
  • Chickens

Slayers will notice that Konar is now assigning tasks to slay the monsters on the Isle of Souls. These monsters can be found in the dungeon. Down we go!
Dungeon
The new dungeon can be found on the eastern side of the island. The following creatures can be found within:

  • Skeletons
  • Lesser demons
  • Greater demons
  • Fire giants
  • Blue dragons
  • Baby blue dragons
  • Iron dragons

Konar is particularly interested in the greater demons, fire giants, blue dragons and iron dragons.

You can also find adamantite and runite rocks in the dungeon – but watch your back!

Lastly, the dungeon contains a chest that requires 28 Thieving to open – although there’s always a chance of failure, which can result in you being teleported out of the dungeon. You can, of course, use a lockpick to improve your chances of success.

Successfully looting the chest will net you 150 Thieving XP and an item from a new loot table, which includes the Dark Key.

What’s that for? Come this way – and watch your step!
The Crumbling Tower
This ancient ruin is overflowing with a new kind of monster - forgotten souls. They count as ghosts for Slayer Tasks and are treated as spectral creatures by the Ectoplasmator. Hoovering them up will get you something from their special loot table.

In the basement of the tower you can find a chest, which you’ll need a Dark Key to open. Upon doing so, you’ll receive 1,500 Thieving XP and an item from a new loot table. Incidentally, you can right-click the chest to see how many times you’ve opened it so far.

That’s all for the tour, but stick around to see what changes we’ve made to Soul Wars this week!

Soul Wars Changes

The Soul Wars guide and tutorial have been updated to reference the new waiting rooms, as well as the changes to the cooldown to leave Graveyards and Bases after death.

You can now purchase blighted items from the Soul Wars Reward Shop for 10 Zeal a piece. They can’t be sold back again or used within the Soul Wars arena – but you can use them in the Wilderness. Mmm, delicious corruption!
