Poll 83: Castle Wars Update

Poll 83 Castle Wars changes have arrived!

Changelog - April 3rd

[expand]

Poll 83: Castle Wars Update

Dedicated Castle Wars world changes:
  • You can now only enter through the Guthix (green) portal to ensure more balanced teams.
  • Players will now earn 1 additional ticket for participating in a game.
  • On members worlds, players are now granted Plaudits alongside tickets. These Plaudits can be used to purchase Castle Wars supply crates via Lanthus.

All Castle Wars world changes:
  • The Castlewars brew now also applies the effects of a Stamina Potion and Super restore when consumed. Note: The reduction in run energy depletion associated with Stamina potions won't occur on F2P worlds.
  • Helmets can now be worn in Castle Wars, enabling the use of armour set effects.
  • Bandages now scale with your Hitpoints level and can overheal, similar to Anglerfish.
  • Castle Wars bracelets can now be handed to Lanthus to store charges, automatically consuming one per game.
  • You can now use blighted food and cast Vengeance with blighted sacks while in the Castle Wars lobby.
  • Players now receive a Rune Pouch when entering Castle Wars, providing unlimited runes for select spells. Note, these spells no longer grant casting XP when the pouch is used, but still award XP based on damage dealt. To earn full Magic XP, you will need to drop the pouch and bring your own runes.
  • A new barricade cap on dedicated Castle Wars worlds restricts teams to 7 barricades outside and 10 inside the base.
  • Placed barricades now have a coloured rope to indicate what team they belong to.
  • Barricades can now be placed in front of the respawn barriers.
  • A new element has been added to the Castle Wars Heads-Up Display, showing the number of barricades your team has placed both inside and outside your base.
  • Small walls have been added to the stairs and ladder at the respawn point, allowing players to range over them and create more strategic barricade placements.
  • On non-Castle Wars worlds, players within Castle Wars will be able to shove targets back-to-back using the Dragon Spear and Zamorakian Hasta special attacks. On Castle Wars Worlds, players will still be unable to perform consecutive shoves on the same target.
  • There is now a table with buckets in the supply room where the bucket spawn used to be.
  • Fixed a bug where the player's overhead yellow arrow would not disappear after depositing the flag.
Poll 83: Rune Pouch Changes
  • The Rune Pouch UI has been upgraded to include new 1, 5, X, and "All" options for easier Rune withdrawals and deposits.
Other Changes
  • Fixed a bug causing the Moons of Peril to stop functioning if killed with Sunfire damage.
  • Fixed a bug where the auto-weed setting was incorrectly appearing off when it was on, and vice-versa.
  • You can no longer skip one of the shortcut obstacles in the Fremennik Slayer caves by interacting with a different obstacle.
  • An optional warning has now been added when 'using' items on an Explorer's Ring to alch them. The warning can be disabled via the game's main Settings menu.
  • Adjusted the Chaos Fanatic's AoE attack so it only affects the last player who engaged in combat.
  • Removed unintended range blocking from the chaos rift and a fallen tree in the Wilderness to improve consistency as they visually look like you should be able to fire projectiles over them, but previously couldn't.
  • Selecting the "Experienced" option in the dialogue should set "Casting Alchemy Spells on Untradeable items always triggers a warning" to enabled and "Minimum item value needed for Alchemy spells warning" to 150k.

Poll 83: Castle Wars Update
Castle Wars Brews
Raise your vials, because Castlewars brews just got a double shot of power! Now, when you down a brew, you'll not only get the usual combat kick, but also the effects of a Stamina Potion and Super Restore too! That means more energy to sprint into battle and a quicker recovery to keep you in the fight.
Helmets On
Hood holding you back? No more! Players can now wear helmets in Castle Wars, unlocking all those coveted armour set effects – whether you're sporting Torva or rocking that Void, now you can look sharp and fight even sharper!
Bandages That Mean Business
No more half-hearted healing! Bandages in Castle Wars now scale with your Hitpoints level and can overheal, just like Anglerfish. That extra bit of health could be the difference between a quick retreat and a triumphant comeback. Slap on those bandages and charge back to the fray with confidence!
Portal Changes
If you love the color green, then get ready to celebrate because Guthix is taking over! Castle Wars has always been a blast, but those one-sided games? Not so much. We’ve borrowed a little magic from Soul Wars to bring back the balance.

Now, on dedicated Castle Wars worlds, you’ll be entering only through the Guthix portal, ensuring that teams are more evenly matched. No more Saradomin and Zamorak portals causing team stacking! We’re putting a stop to those unfair sides once and for all.

Prefer your games the old way? No worries! If you're playing on a regular world, you can still waltz through any portal and pick your side. No green pressure there.

We hope these changes will make every match more competitive, more exciting, and more fun. So grab your Ancients, rally your team, and get ready to battle - this time, it’s going to be a fair fight!
Castlewars Bracelets
Bracelets in Castle Wars - they're great for those sweet buffs, but let's face it, they often get tossed aside at the start of the game. Well, worry no more - Lanthas has got your back and is here to save the day (and your bracelets)!

With this update, you can now store bracelet charges with Lanthas, keeping them safe for future battles without the hassle. You can even store noted versions! At the start of each game, one charge will automatically be used, and if you're not feeling it, this feature can be toggled on or off.

Lanthas won’t just take your bracelets and run, though - a confirmation prompt ensures you don’t accidentally deposit more than intended. If you’ve got a handful of bracelets, the Deposit-X option lets you store multiple at once.
Castle Wars Rune Pouch Update
Ready to cast spells without the headache of remembering your runes? Introducing the Rune Pouch to Castle Wars!

When you jump into a Castle Wars game, you’ll be handed a temporary Rune Pouch loaded with all the runes you need to cast your favorite spells. Forget about worrying if you packed the right runes - just hop in and start casting! Here’s the catch though: This pouch won’t earn you any cast XP for spellcasting, but you will still get XP for dealing damage! To earn full Magic XP, you will need to drop the pouch and bring your own runes.

Dropped your pouch or accidentally lost it in the heat of battle? No worries! You can grab another one from the table in your team’s spawn area. For those who prefer their own runes, just ditch the Rune Pouch, and you’ll be back to casting with full XP rewards. If you’ve got both personal runes and the pouch, don’t sweat it – the pouch will take priority when casting, so you won’t end up wasting your personal stash.

What Spells Can Be Used?

The Rune Pouch opens up a world of combat and utility spells across the Standard, Ancient, Lunar, and Arceuus spellbooks. Here’s a breakdown of the spells you can cast, depending on your chosen spellbook:
  • Standard Spells: Wind Strike, Bind, Snare, Entangle, Saradomin Strike, Claws of Guthix, Flames of Zamorak, and more.
  • Ancient Magicks: Blood Barrage, Ice Barrage, Smoke Burst, and other PvP-relevant spells.
  • Lunar Spells: Vengeance, Spellbook Swap, and Energy Transfer.
  • Arceuus Spells: Ghostly Grasp, Vile Vigour, and Ward of Arceuus.

Also to note:
  • Spells requiring a staff (e.g., Saradomin Strike, Claws of Guthix) will still require the appropriate staff to cast.
  • Non-PvP utility spells like High Alchemy and Enchanting remain restricted.

We hope this change lets you dive into Castle Wars without the hassle of packing your own runes, so you can get straight to the action, while still respecting the grind and integrity of your standard magic training methods.
More Tickets, More Loot!
Who doesn’t love a little extra loot? On dedicated Castle Wars worlds, we're boosting your rewards with an additional ticket just for participating. Here’s the new, shiny reward structure:

Dedicated Castle Wars worlds:
  • No points draw → 2 tickets each
  • Draw with points → 3 tickets each
  • Win (both teams scored points) → 3 for winners, 2 for losers
  • Win (no lost flags) → 4 for winners, 2 for losers

Non-Castle Wars worlds:
  • No points draw → 1 ticket each
  • Draw with points → 2 tickets each
  • Win (both teams scored points) → 2 for winners, 1 for losers
  • Win (no lost flags) → 3 for winners, 1 for losers

On dedicated Castle Wars worlds, members will now earn Plaudits alongside tickets. These Plaudits can be exchanged with Lanthus for Castle Wars supply crates. Lanthus's store has been revamped with a sleek new interface, but don't worry - the classic rewards are still available at their original prices.

If you can’t see the image above, click here!

Now, on members worlds, you can also trade a Plaudit for a supply crate. This crate requires two additional inventory spaces to open and contains:
  • Blighted potions and food
  • A mixture of Blood, Death, Soul, and Nature runes
  • Rune arrows and Javelins
  • Lovely Money!

Love a Barricade tactic? We've also made the following tweaks:
  • A new barricade cap on dedicated Castle Wars worlds restricts teams to 7 barricades outside and 10 inside the base.
  • Placed barricades now have a coloured rope to indicate what team they belong to
  • Barricades can now be placed in front of the respawn barriers.
  • A new element has been added to the Castle Wars Heads-Up Display, showing the number of barricades your team has placed both inside and outside your base.

We've also made the following changes:
  • Small walls have been added to the stairs and ladder at the respawn point, allowing players to range over them and create more strategic barricade placements.
  • On non-Castle Wars worlds, players within Castle Wars will be able to shove targets back-to-back using the Dragon Spear and Zamorakian Hasta special attacks. In the Wilderness and on dedicated Castle Wars worlds, players will still be unable to perform consecutive shoves on the same target.
  • There is now a table with buckets in the supply room where the bucket spawn used to be.
  • Fixed a bug where the player's overhead yellow arrow would not disappear after depositing the flag.

Rune Pouch Changes

Say goodbye to Rune management headaches! The Rune Pouch UI just got a nice little QoL upgrade with new 1, 5, X, and "All" options for withdrawing and depositing Runes, making swapping them out easier than ever.

Selecting "All" will set it as the default left-click for both actions - so no more right-clicking and hunting for that one pesky option! Plus, your last selection is saved even after logging out, so you won’t have to set it again every time you play.

Poll 83 Changes
  • Updated the Slayer Cape perk when used at Konar to reassign tasks within the same area. The perk now considers the specific location of the task when offering a repeat assignment.
  • You can now cast Alchemy by using items on the Explorer’s Ring, removing the need to wear it or navigate a dialogue box.
  • Added a new dialogue option to receive another farming contract at the same tier as the one a player has just completed.
  • You can now mouse over any fairy ring you have unlocked on the world map to be reminded of its code.
  • Added a seed pack reward to Tithe Farm in exchange for points.
  • Prayer tooltips now shows the base drain rates of all prayers.
  • Updated the Shades of Morton's chest designs with clearer markings on top, making them more distinguishable.
  • Mazchna, Vannaka, and Chaeldar now assign Slayer tasks to hunt Crabs. This includes Ammonite, Frost, Rock, Sand and Swamp crabs.
  • All skill guides now feature a new tab named after the skill, providing an overview of what the skill is and the benefits of levelling it.
  • Your game settings will now be automatically adjusted based on your choice when asked on Tutorial Island whether you’re a Beginner, Returning, or Experienced player.
Player Support Update
  • From today onwards, whenever your macroing (botting) report has been reviewed and actioned, you'll receive an inbox message directly in your Message Centre.
Emote Looping Continued
  • The emote looping feature has been added to an additional 45 emotes. This also includes looping for specific treasure trail items such as Flared trousers, Sleeping cap, Powdered wig and Pantaloons.
W345 Permanent Deadman Changes
  • Increased the rarity of Charms and stopped players with Deadman protection from obtaining them. This is to help the prices of the items long term and reward players taking those risks with extra loot!
  • Removed the Elite Diary requirement for purchasing Elite Void. Now you can simply take a regular Void Knight Top or Void Knight Robes to the Elite Void Knight at Pest Control and upgrade your regular void pieces to Elite void pieces for 200 points per piece!
  • Added an option to change the respawn location to the Grand Exchange. Talk to Brugsen Bursen at the Grand Exchange to choose your respawn point upon death, similar to Deadman Armageddon.
  • All players can now use Chivalry, Rigour, and Augury in Permanent Deadman Mode provided they have the prayer level requirement, regardless of their defence level. Chivalry still requires the completion of the Holy Grail quest, Rigour and Augury still requires the prayer scrolls.
  • Trinkets now turn to Trinket dust upon death, similar to Charms.
  • The old Deadman skulls (as seen in Bounty Hunter) have returned to Permanent Deadman.
  • A check has been added to prevent skulled players from diving with the rowboat on Fossil Island.
Other Changes
  • Logging out whilst in the Theatre of Blood or Tombs of Amascut while you have an Escape Crystal in your inventory will now consume the crystal and teleport you outside of the raid on login, preserving any HCIM status you might have.
  • Aggie in Draynor Village has been updated with a Make-All interface for her red, yellow and blue dyes. Instead of crafting dyes one at a time through dialogue, you can now quickly select how many you’d like to make in one go.
  • Lore books in Chambers and TOB will no longer drop once a player has read them.
  • Fixed an issue where getting hit by another player's 'Duel' operation while using Mystic Cards would cause Emote 'Loop' options to stop working until the player moved tiles.
  • The Alchemist's Amulet can no longer be purchased when the player has no space in their inventory.
  • Fixed an issue where quickly destroying the Orb of Oculus while activating the Scry function could crash the client.
  • Getting saved by a Phoenix necklace no longer restores your sanity in a Whisperer fight.

Poll 83 QoL Changes

This week, we’re rolling out some of the QoL Poll 83 changes you’ve been waiting for - with even more coming next week! Below is a rundown of the latest updates we've implemented, many of which were inspired by your feedback. So, grab a cuppa and let's dive in!
Slaying Crabs
Shellfish enthusiasts get ready - our community’s favourite low-effort combat training method is now part of Slayer tasks! That’s right, the crab has scuttled its way onto the task lists for Mazchna, Vannaka, and Chaeldar. These tough-shelled training partners have long been a go-to for efficient combat experience, and this update should help newer players discover their benefits too.

If you receive a Crabs task, you can take on any of the following:
  • Ammonite Crabs: Located on Fossil Island and within the Wyvern Cave.
  • Frost Crabs: Found amidst the Ruins of Tapoyauik.
  • Rock Crabs: Reside north of Rellekka, on Waterbirth Island, west of Mount Quidamortem, inside the Waterbirth Island Dungeon, and within the Brine Rat Cavern.
  • Sand Crabs: Can be encountered on the Isle of Souls, Crabclaw Isle, east of the Hosidius Vinery, south of the Colossal Wyrm Agility Course, and along the coast south of the Fortis Coliseum.
  • Swamp Crabs: Dwell in the swamp north of Darkmeyer and to the east of Slepe.
Slayer Cape Perk at Konar
Your Slayer Cape has had a bit of a tune-up. Now, when its perk is triggered at Konar, it will reassign the task within the same area by considering the exact location of your current assignment. No more rerolls that leave you scratching your head – you’ll get the same monster and same location to keep that Slaying momentum going!

If you can’t see the image above, click here!
Explorer’s Ring Alchemy
Who has time to navigate clunky dialogue boxes mid-battle? Not you! The Explorer’s Ring now lets you cast Alchemy simply by using items on it. This little tweak means you can transform your loot in a flash, freeing up inventory space for more treasures.
Farming Contracts
We all know Guildmaster Jane loves a good chat - but sometimes, you just want to get back to farming! That’s why we’ve added a new dialogue option that lets you grab another contract of the same tier instantly after finishing one. Less menu navigation, more time planting - your green thumb will thank you!

If you can’t see the image above, click here!
Fairy Rings on the Map
If you can’t see the image above, click here!

Ever forgotten a fairy ring code mid-route? We’ve all been there. Now, when you mouse over any fairy ring you’ve unlocked on the world map, its code will pop up. Neat!
Tithe Farm Reward – Seed Packs!
Your efforts at Tithe Farm just got a little sweeter! The Tithe Farm shop has been upgraded to use the new shop interface - don’t worry, you can still grab all the same rewards as before. Plus, we’ve added a brand-new seed pack reward, available for purchase with Tithe Points! This isn’t just any seed pack; it’s equivalent to a Tier 3 Farming Guild contract reward, with a dash of chance at a White Lily Seed.

If you can’t see the image above, click here!
Personalised Settings for New Accounts
New to Gielinor? No problem! When you step onto Tutorial Island, you’ll be asked if you’re a Beginner, Returning, or Experienced player. Based on your answer, your settings will automatically adjust to suit your style:
  • Beginners: Enjoy a fresh guide interface with enhanced skill descriptions – say goodbye to overwhelming menus and hello to easy learning!
  • Returning Players: Your tried-and-true settings remain just as you left them, ready for another round of adventure.
  • Experienced Players enjoy optimised defaults, such as:
    • Roof hiding for a clearer view
    • Shift-click to drop items
    • Refined attack options (right-click on players, left-click on NPCs),
    • Make-X for darts and bolts disabled
    • Collection log new addition popup and notification enabled
    • Enabled precise timing
    • PK Skull Prevention
    • Auto-equip worn items from gravestones
    • Rune-picking behaviour
    • Drop item warning disabled
    • Casting Alchemy Spells on Untradeable items warning disabled
    • The minimum item value needed for Alchemy spells warning is set to 0
    • All "Plank make X confirmation" options disabled
    • Accept Aid is disabled

This change cuts down the time spent tweaking settings, letting you jump straight into your adventures.
Shades of Morton chests
We’ve given Shades of Morton’s chests a makeover – now sporting clearer top markings so you can easily spot those secret loot stashes. This upgrade is especially handy for mobile players who know that spotting a chest shouldn’t feel like a scavenger hunt!

If you can’t see the image above, click here!
Prayer Tooltips
Ever wondered how much juice your prayers are really draining? Well, wonder no more! Prayer tooltips now display the base drain rates for all prayers, giving you that extra bit of insight during those heated battles.

If you can’t see the image above, click here!
Skill Guide Summaries
Finally, we’ve improved our skill guides with a brand new tab for each skill. These summaries break down what each skill does and the benefits of levelling them up. Whether you’re a battle-hardened veteran or just starting out, this extra clarity will help you plan your path to glory.

Player Support Update

Back in December, we shared a Player Support Survey: 'Help Shape the Future' to better understand what areas of our support offering you want to see improved. Your feedback was clear, with 89% of you saying you'd value receiving confirmation when your cheating reports lead to action.

We've got good news! We've delivered the first step of this improvement ahead of schedule! Rather than waiting until our full Player Support Improvements Roadmap reveal next month, we decided there's no reason to delay something that’s ready today.

From today onwards, whenever your macroing (botting) report has been reviewed and actioned, you'll receive an inbox message directly in your Message Centre. This is an initial rollout for macroing reports, and we'll be closely monitoring feedback as we look to expand this system to cover additional types of cheating reports in future.

This improvement is part of our ongoing commitment to making the world of Gielinor fairer, safer, and more enjoyable for everyone.

If you missed the recent Q&A with Mod North, you'll be pleased to know there’s even more to come! We’ll be sharing the full Player Support Improvements Roadmap in April, detailing further upgrades to your support experience across 2025.

Got questions? We’ve put together an FAQ here!

More Emote Looping!

Hold onto your Sleeping caps, adventurers - your favourite emotes are now on an endless loop! We’ve added 45 looping emote sequences to ensure every move you make is the envy of Gielinor. If you’re sporting Treasure Trails gear like the Flared Trousers, Sleeping Cap, Powdered Wig, or Pantaloons, your enhanced emotes now loop with extra swagger - it’s your very own runway moment!

You can finally try out Old School RuneScape’s first new skill in nearly two decades right now

Old School RuneScape has always had a tightrope to walk—honor the past it exists to keep alive without completely stagnating while modern RuneScape, or RuneScape 3, does whatever it wants—which makes today a historic occasion for the long-running MMO. While past additions have been abstemious, largely in line with the school of design and scope you’d expect from RuneScape’s humble 2007 version, the new sailing skill adds a whole dimension of play...

You saw it at RuneFest – now’s your chance to try the Sailing Alpha at home!

Get ready to jump into a massive, open Sailing playtest packed with exciting high-seas adventure. Start off on a teeny tiny raft and improve your skill as a sailor until you eventually become an experienced captain - commanding a crew of your own and traversing the most hazardous of waters. On your journey you'll dive with mermaids, chase ducks and explore the far reaches of the ocean. Many roads lead to 99, but the path you choose is up to you.

Recently, players tried Sailing for the very first time in-person at RuneFest. It was incredible! The LAN area was packed throughout both days, making for an unforgettable experience. It was our first large scale playtest of the Alpha, and now it's time for an even BIGGER one!

Some of you still have questions or concerns about Sailing, and that’s exactly why the Sailing Alpha matters. It’s your chance to get hands-on and experience the skill for yourself. You already know how Sailing looks in blogs or videos, but we want to know how it feels when you're playing it. We make content for you, and we care about your feedback. Give it a chance and you might just find that you've discovered your new favourite skill!

The Alpha is expected to take approximately 75 minutes to complete, and it will be open for one week.

Let's start with an explanation of what is in the Alpha – check out this video made in collaboration with Gunschilli and GentleTractor!

Getting Started

The Alpha is available on PC via RuneLite, Java or the Official C++ Client. Unfortunately, it won't be available on mobile. Any member's account can simply select a Sailing Alpha Playtest world from the world selection menu, and log in to begin testing. Once in the game, you'll quickly be taken to Port Sarim - an important starting location for all things Sailing.

As we're using Beta Worlds, there are two buttons under the Settings menu (Gameplay) tab that will be useful to know:
  • 'Covert save to Beta Worlds': This works from regular worlds and will copy your save over to the beta worlds. You will retain your stats, with a couple potentially boosted if too low.
  • 'Reset Beta Worlds Save': This works directly from Beta Worlds, and will allow you to reset your save so you can re-play the Alpha once you hit the Level cap of 30.

Once you're in, check out the bottom-left of your screen to view the Sailing Alpha FAQ, containing all the information you need to become a true sailor. There is also a survey linked directly in the FAQ interface. Please make sure to fill this out, as it's really important for us to learn where we can improve before the full launch.

Feedback

As we mentioned above, this is an Alpha build, not a finished product. If you encounter unfinished issues, you can use the in-game bug report form to let the team know what's wrong. We'll hotfix what we can, though larger fixes or feedback points will need to come via future builds. You can find the in-game bug report button on your chat box. It's a red report button and right-clicking it will show the report game bug option.
From RuneFest
We are already aware of two bugs:
  • If you get stuck on objects or land, use the ‘Reverse’ or ‘Escape’ manouevre by right-clicking the helm of your boat.
  • A bug in the Beta worlds caused boats to only move in one direction. This issue has now been fixed, but if it happens again, log into a different world to resolve it.

At RuneFest, players often mis-clicked their sails and caused their boat to stop unintentionally. Players would also sometimes stop their boats when they clicked the sails multiple times during the 'speed up' window of opportunity. Ideally, we want to have navigational parity, so that everything you can do in-game you can also do via the side panel. Due to the amount of mis-clicks that we saw, we've made un-setting the sails a right-click function instead. As a result of this change, reversing your sail can currently only be done via the side panel. You'll only need to reverse your sails when you get stuck, so it shouldn't happen often enough that you'll need it as an option on your sail. Additionally, the 'Trim sails' function will now only be a left click when the sails can be trimmed. This helps to avoid double-clicks which accidentally stop the boat. If you prefer 'set' or 'unset' sails to be a left-click option again, you can use the Menu Entry Swapper tool in RuneLite or the Official Client.

Additionally, some of the Sea Charting activities felt a little confusing as players didn't know for sure if they were in the right location. New visual indicators for the Current Duck and Spyglass locations have been added to resolve this. We've also expanded the range at which you can use the tools required, so it's a little easier. In particular, the weather station activity from the Troll Meterologist confused a fair amount of players, so we're planning on addressing that by adding in small miniquests to help introduce these activities in a familiar way.

Another issue we found at RuneFest was that players couldn't easily find Shipwrecks. To help with this, we've added new graphics to make them more visually distinct. We welcome feedback on how these look, or other areas that might need visual changes in the future.

Finally, we've adjusted some elements of the side panel to make it more intuitive. The arrows are up and down to show speed rather than left and right. They will also show visual feedback when you're at the max or slowest speed. In the future, we'd like to do more with the side panel, such as integrating the Captain's Log so that you're not forced to keep it in your Inventory.
How and where to leave your feedback on the Sailing Alpha
As mentioned above, the best place to start for bug reports will be the in-game report feature. You can find this on the chat box. It's a red report button and right-clicking it will show the report game bug option.

We encourage feedback from everyone on the Sailing Alpha. Throughout this week and next, we'll keep a close eye on feedback and address major points from the survey and other social platforms in a Sailing Discord Stage Q&A sometime next week.

To join the Sailing Discord, use this link. We'll even take player questions live! Many of you have questions or suggestions about future content being added to Sailing and we'll do our best to answer them.

During the Alpha, the team will review feedback and provide general thoughts on changes (or additional hotfixes) we expect to add. Check back here later in the day or week for any bugs or issues that you might encounter – we'll do our best to keep this blog regularly updated.

Please bear in mind that some changes simply can't be released via a hotfix. Although we'll be keen to patch issues that disrupt the Alpha severely, bigger feedback changes will have to come via a future Sailing Beta. You'll hear more about our plans for the Beta once the Alpha is complete.

Now, let's recap exactly what's included in the Sailing Alpha for those who might have missed our last blog.

Sailing Alpha Q&A Livestream

Pandemonium (New Quest)

Learn how to sail a boat, dock, and do more basic gameplay tasks with Pandemonium, an introductory quest for Sailing. You'll also explore the Pandemonium, a new island intended as the home port for your adventures on the high seas.

Start the Quest by speaking to Will and Anne, who can be found on the docks of Port Sarim.

Will and Anne are a pair of salvagers in need of an extra pair of hands on their mighty salvaging vessel. At least, that's how they'd describe it. The truth is a bit more complicated, but we'll let you discover that for yourself...

After completing the quest you’ll receive a Captain’s Log, which you can use to track Port Tasks and other details of life at sea. If you ever lose your Captain's Log, open the Cargo Hold and click (or right-click) the duck button to reclaim it.

If you can’t see the image above, click here!

Boats

Once you've completed Pandemonium, you'll get your very own Raft. At Level 10 Sailing, you'll be able to buy a Small Boat. In the future, you will unlock bigger boats at higher Sailing levels, however, only the Raft and Small Boat will be available for testing in the Alpha.

If you can’t see the image above, click here!

You can retrieve, buy and customise your boats by speaking to a Shipwright. A Shipwright can be found on most docks near the Salvaging Station – and you’ll meet one during the Pandemonium quest!

If you can’t see the image above, click here!

Once you’re on a boat, click the Helm to enter 'Navigation Mode', which will lock you in place.

To get your boat moving, set your sails by clicking them or using the side panel. Your boat will move forwards as long as your sails are set and you can adjust your direction clicking on the sea.

To stop your boat, you can click directly on the sails or use the side panel. You can also adjust your boat's speed through the side panel, if you wish. To move in reverse, use the lowest possible speed value on the side panel.

Every 30 seconds or so, you will notice a 10-second gust of wind around your sails. This is an opportunity to trim your sails for a nice speed boost and some Sailing XP. The animation will be obvious, so you should have no trouble spotting it! Let us know if you think we could make it even more visible.

If you have a wind-catcher facility installed, you can keep your speed boosts to use at a later time when you'd like to use it. If you don't have one, the speed boost will start instantly.

When you're ready to get off your boat, you can simply navigate your boat to a Port and left-click the gangplank to disembark. If you're picking up a friend at Port, you'll find that left-clicking the buoy will allow you to anchor your boat and wait for them.

If you get stuck during the Alpha without a way to reverse, or you need a fast way back to land, right-click your Helm to 'Escape'.

Ship Customization

As you gain Sailing levels, you’ll also gain the ability to upgrade your ship. As a result, you’ll be able to weather increasingly dangerous seas.

If you can’t see the image above, click here!

Since this is just the Alpha, we’re not expecting you to grind for upgrade materials, or even bring the tools you’ll need to build them.

Instead, you’ll be able to obtain all the resources and tools you could possibly need in a handy chest next to the board in the ship yard. When you’ve got the materials, have a word with Shipwright Sam to start customising!

To upgrade your Keel, Hull, Sail or Helm, you can use the Shipwright's customize-boat option.

To build a new facility on your boat, click on the gangplank at the shipyard to go over to your boat and build hotspots – if you’ve done a bit of Construction, this will seem very familiar! Just as in your Player-owned House, each hotspot has different options, so check them all carefully.

If you can’t see the image above, click here!

In the Sailing Alpha, buildable facilities include:
  • Bronze Salvaging Hook
  • Iron Salvaging Hook
  • Wind Catcher
    • This can be used to store wind charges you get from correctly trimming your sails and use them on command.
  • Cargo Hold
  • Oak Mast
  • Anchor

There are also buildable Cannons in the Sailing Alpha, although you won’t be able to use them as Ship Combat hasn’t yet been implemented.

Multiplayer

Multiplayer features are still early in development, but the Alpha does have something for you to try. You will be able to join your friends' boats and make use of their facilities as you sail together. Just make sure you have the right Sailing level, and you'll be able to sail and salvage shipwrecks while aboard your friends' boats!

We’ve also created a solution for having too many ships crowding your screen. The game will render up to 25 ships at one time, and a new shadow will appear beneath your boat to indicate when a fellow sailor is on top of you.

You can view the video here.

World Map & New Areas

What good would Sailing be if you had no seas to sail on? We’re turning the existing blue tiles of the World Map into something extra special. Shallow, Open, and Deep Seas will be represented on the World Map and in-game. At this time, the changes are purely cosmetic and won’t affect your boat’s speed or ability to sail through them – with the notable exception of the hazardous waters you’ll encounter in Barracuda Trials. In future we plan to add speed-related effects to different types of water, but these will likely only impact larger boats.

If you can’t see the image above, click here!

Eagle-eyed explorers will notice that the coastline around Menaphos is no longer a big blank hole. While we have every intention of unveiling that great city one day, as the desert storylines progress, that'd be a bit much to bundle into the Sailing project! You'll be welcome to sail around the coastline at a distance, but you won't be able to dock there... for now...

In the final version of Sailing, you’ll be able to explore a vast ocean space filled with new areas to visit – but for now, we’ve blocked out a limited area of the sea for you to explore. Wouldn’t want you getting lost now, would we?

The Pandemonium is a great place to start your adventure, but you can also sail on over to The Great Conch, home of the Tortugans, although it won't be accessible in this playtest. You’ll want to keep an eye out for other points of interest at sea too, including:
  • Last Light
  • Charred Island
  • The Isle of Bones (Previously called 'The End Island')
  • Dognose Island
If you can’t see the image above, click here!

Islands aren’t the main focus of the Sailing Alpha, so this is just a small taste of what they’ll eventually become. In the future, they’ll contain content for existing skills and feed into the reward space for Sailing. Once the Alpha has concluded, you can expect to hear more about all the fantastic places you’ll visit through Sailing, and of course, you’ll have the chance to vote for it all!

Port Tasks

Port Tasks are a lower-intensity training method that will have you Sailing from Port to Port, assisting NPCs with various problems.

If you can’t see the image above, click here!

Starting a Port Task is simple. Just head to the Notice Board available at most Ports. You'll start off with two slots, and as you level, you’ll gain more. In the Alpha, there are three Ports that you can take tasks from:
  • The Pandemonium
  • Port Sarim
  • Catherby

There are two more Ports that are also technically available, but since the Alpha is capped at Level 30, you won't have the required Sailing level to visit them.
  • Port Khazard
  • Ruins of Unkah

You can cancel Port Tasks in the Port Task interface, found in your Captain’s Log.

In our last blog, we mentioned that Port Tasks are repeatable and can change daily.

We designed them this way so that the Tasks would change frequently to keep things fresh, without changing so often that it became frustrating. The intended loop is to plan your route once a day, while the rest of your play session remained consistent.

However, you raised that this approach might limit your desire to play to certain days. We completely agree, and we're working on a new design for this - unfortunately it’s not ready for us to show you in this Alpha.

Shipwreck Salvaging

During your Sailing journey, you'll stumble across shipwrecks. Using a Salvaging Hook, you can retrieve valuable resources and lost treasures from them in a relaxed, laid-back training method.

If you can’t see the image above, click here!

Salvaging requires astonishingly little effort outside of the initial setup. It’s a great AFK activity while you’re watching TV… or that boring Zoom call. We won’t judge.

To salvage, simply navigate your boat close to a shipwreck. Make sure the sails are down, then exit the tiller and click your Salvaging Hook. There are two salvaging spots in the Alpha, to the east and west of Karamja. If you’re having trouble spotting them, check the World Map!

Salvage goes directly into your Inventory, but you can choose to store it in the Cargo Hold by right-clicking it. The basic Cargo Hold holds up to 20 items, but you can always upgrade it to get more room.

Most ports have their own Salvaging Station where you can sort your Salvage into loot.

Instead of a Light, Heavy and Advanced Hook as mentioned in our previous blogs, we've streamlined the design to now only offer one Salvaging Hook type that scales from Bronze to Dragon. In the Alpha you can upgrade it all the way to Iron!

Sea Charting

As you voyage across the seas of Gielinor, you’ll find plenty of memorable locations, hidden currents, ocean depths, weather patterns, and other phenomena you’ll want to note down in your Captain’s Log.

If you can’t see the image above, click here!

Sea Charting rewards your natural desire to explore and is the perfect training method for completionists.

We don’t want to spoil all the different things you can find at sea, but in the Alpha, you’ll be able to chart the following starter zone locations:
  • Bay of Sarim
  • Mudskipper Sound
  • The Firth of Lum
  • Bedabin Basin
  • Rimmington Strait

Here’s a big list of the items in question:
  • Captain's Log: To record and document sea charting. It will also tell you information about where you can chart.
  • Spyglass: Observe notable areas.
  • Current Duck: Quack – sorry, track - the currents of the sea.
  • Crowbar: Pry open crates found at sea and choose whether you want to drink what you find inside.
  • Upgraded Diving Apparatus/Helmet: Gather sea depth data after assisting mermaids.
  • Anti Rust Tonic: Removes rust from weather stations for the Troll Meteorologist.

Note that most tools will only become available after you’ve built a Cargo Hold, which is also where you’ll be storing them.

Complete the 'Prying Times' miniquest for more information about how to use the Crowbar. If you're not sure where to go, open up your Captain's Log and filter it by Sea Group, Superset or Level Requirement. Typically, you'll want to start with one area and chart it fully before moving onto the next.

During the NDA playtests, we noticed that some players found the tools unintuitive. In particular, the Troll Meteorologist tasks were the most challenging. Our biggest tip for you here is to remember that the Troll wants you to find the area where there is no wind, so when you're following the instructions, try to imagine a circular storm with an eye of no winds in the middle.

For the Sailing Alpha we’ve added ‘Inspect’ options to every tool, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on how you all get on. In future, we may look to tutorialise Sea Charting through additional miniquests. Please do let us know how it feels to play!

Barracuda Trial: The Tempor Tantrum

The Tempor Tantrum is our first Barracuda Trial, aimed at players with at least level 30 Sailing.

In the trial, you'll be Sailing around the rough seas of Tempoross Cove as you attempt to retrieve rum shipments and ferry them through the storms and back.

You can start by finding Trial Master Rum-Dashed Ralph, just north of the Cove. The aim of the trial will be to ferry rum shipments from the south of the cove to the north, while collecting as many 'lost supplies' floating in the water as you can along the way. You'll want to be fast to impress The Barracudas, so make sure you take advantage of everything at your disposal!

That includes utilising helpful speed boosts that come from sailing through the blue whirling rapids, or trimming your sails at just the right time. Do be careful to avoid hitting any rocks, though, and remember to dodge the storm clouds floating overhead – they’ll damage your ship and slow you down!

If you can’t see the image above, click here!

There won't be any rewards in the Sailing Alpha, but you can work your way up the ranks of Swordfish, Shark and Marlin by completing all their objectives in the given time. To get that top-tier Marlin rank, you'll need to sail extremely quickly and efficiently without missing a single lost shipment along the way. So, good luck!
