Old School RuneScape News

Old School RuneScape developers left mystified as players, whipped up into a religious fervour, demand that gaming's loudest mole-rat get even louder

Today, dear reader, I found out about the accursed Nail Beast. This unassuming creature from Old School RuneScape isn't much to write home about on paper. It's a level 69 (nice), 98, or 141 critter found in the Temple Trekking minigame, and it looks like something between a mole and a panther. They're kind of cute, in a doofy, feline-looking way...

QoL Improvements & Further Deadman: Armageddon Tweaks | July 31st

This week brings a plethora of general QoL improvements, plus tweaks to Deadman: Armageddon and While Guthix Sleeps!

Changelog July 31st

[expand]

Deadman: Armageddon
  • Adjusted the prices of certain Deadman items for Bank Keys.
  • If the player getting special attacked by the Morrigan's Javelin is praying ranged, the bleed damage should now correctly respect this and be reduced by 40%.
  • Taking the cages up and down in Chasm of Fire deals damage to the player, as intended. These changes only apply to Deadman mode.
  • Fixed a bug where losing one minute of Deadman protection when you log out wasn't working, leaving it vulnerable to infinite protection abuse. The protection timer now correctly goes down when you log out, like it did with the previous Deadmans.
  • If you chose the Path of Mahjarrat from the Tier 4 Quest Lamp, you can now correctly claim 10 Museum Kudos for the Curse of the Empty Lord miniquest.
  • The new Deadman versions of the imbued Mage Arena Capes can now be stored in the Player Owned House Cape Rack.

While Guthix Sleeps

Graphically updated the tormented demons’ fire shield effect:
  • Shifted the hue from yellow to orange and toned it down.
  • Added more transparency.
  • Reduced the turning speed of the shield by 50%.
  • The shield animation now plays for two ticks instead of three.
  • Removed the floor symbol and fire circle elements during the shield animation.

Miscellaneous QoL Changes
  • Added XP lamps to the rewards from the Beekeeper random event.
  • Shades of Mort'ton has received some usability adjustments:
    • Added a left-click option to the sacred fire to let players sanctify Olive Oil and Serum 207 more conveniently.
    • Sanctifying an item with the sacred fire will automatically continue sanctifying the vials in your Inventory until you run out of sanctity or items or cancel the action.
    • Sanctifying Serum 207 now uses 5% sanctity per dose, down from 20% - although you will still need at least 20% sanctity to perform the action.
    • A Make-All menu will now appear when using Sacred Oil to make Pyre Logs.
    • Adjusted the Firemaking XP of making Pyre Logs to be a flat 5 XP per dose of Sacred Oil consumed, instead of a variable rate based on how many doses are in the vial.
    • The pyres now have left-click options for adding Pyre Logs and Shade Remains automatically, prioritising the best Pyre Logs available; players may still select them manually if desired.
    • Players will be warned if trying to burn Pyre Logs without the appropriate Shade Remains.
  • Created five Clan ranks above and below the Administrator for greater flexibility.
  • Created a new toggle which lets UIMs opt out of death protection from cosmetics, affecting ornamented items. This applies only to PvM deaths; item loss on PvP death is not affected by the toggle.
  • Fixed issues with certain bolts and arrows acting sus with Dizana’s Quiver:
    • Karil's Bolt Racks no longer hinders using the bolts.
    • The Sunlight Crossbow and its Bolts should now work with the Dizana's Quiver, counting as a bolt and giving the correct bonuses.
    • Having the Mithril Grapple inside Dizana's or a regular Quiver no longer causes issues, and lets the player shoot Crossbow Bolts as intended.
  • You can now cast Vengeance Other from a Blighted Vengeance Sack.
  • Added 'Make-X' option when fletching Bolts, similar to how it is when fletching Darts.
  • Drakan's Medallion can now be reclaimed from Perdu's shop for 30,000 GP.
  • The Plank Make spell will now convert the first log in your Inventory, depositing the resulting Plank in the first available slot.

Other Changes
  • 100% weapon accuracy during Eclipse Moon's Clone Phase is now present for all attack styles.
  • Laps removed are adjusted to 10 from 25 when logging out at the Wilderness Agility Course. The laps still get reset upon leaving the course.
  • Gabooty has put a sale on for the Tai Bwo Wannai denizens and some of them took up the offer to refresh their wardrobe, bringing a bit more colour to the village.

Deadman: Armageddon

Deadman: Armageddon is firing on all cylinders, and it’s been great to see so many of you joining the battle! You have until August 3rd to experience the PvP action and snag yourself some killer cosmetics.

Before we jump into this week's changes, we've received a handful of questions around the World 345 transfer process and wanted to clear some things up!

At the end of Deadman: Armageddon, your character and all of their stats will transfer over to World 345. You'll also transfer any untradeables that you've got so long as they don't convert into a tradeable item on death, this means that things like Barrows armour or a recoloured Bow of Faerdhinen should not transfer over. We'd like to remind you that items in your DMM Deposit Box will not transfer. You'll also keep any pets that you've got because it wouldn't be right to separate you from your adoring little followers! Additionally, any items in any 'storage' containers (check out this page for a full list) should also be wiped, so you won't find anything you've got sitting in the Chambers of Xeric making its way into the permanent Deadman worlds either.

Hopefully that clears things up, now back to our regularly scheduled game update content!

While you've been busy surviving the chaos, we’ve been busy making improvements behind the scenes:
Deadman 2024 Finale
If you haven't already, mark your calendars for the Deadman 2024 Grand Finale, which will be livestreamed on our Twitch channel, this Saturday, August 3rd at 18:00 BST. Tune in to watch five finales across five combat brackets battle through PvP mayhem! It’s a show you won’t want to miss.

While Guthix Sleeps

Over the last couple of weeks, we have seen that some players have been having a hard time with the tormented demons' fire shield effect, causing them eye strain and motion sickness. To avoid this, we've made some tweaks:
  • Shifted the hue from yellow to orange and toned it down.
  • Added more transparency.
  • Reduced the turning speed of the shield by 50%.
  • The shield animation now plays for two ticks instead of three.
  • Removed the floor symbol and fire circle elements during the shield animation.

Miscellaneous QoL Changes

We’ve also managed to bring you a handful of much-requested Quality of Life changes this week!

First up, we’re heading to the Clan Hall, where we’ve added five more rank slots above and below Administrator, which should cover all your ranking needs. For context, the game has restrictions specifically based on the Administrator rank, which is why it’s not so easy for us to move it about. One such restriction involves the data space where a player’s ‘last seen’ date is stored. We’re aware that Clan Leaders want this information to be stored for lower-rank Clan members, rather than only those above Administrator Rank, and we hope to be able to offer this in future. For now, though, we hope the extra Rank slots give players more flexibility in roles above Administrator in rank. For existing Clans, the new Rank slots have been assigned placeholder Titles. You can use the Titles menu to assign more thematic ones if you so desire.

Next up, a quality-of-life improvement for UIMs! On a PvM death, many items that have Ornament Kits applied to them will be protected on death, staying in your Inventory rather than falling to a grave. This protection was introduced years ago as a little extra perk for cosmetic kits, affecting the ornamented versions of items like the Mystic Lava Staff, Fighter Torso and the Elidinis' Ward (f). UIM may find this protection unhelpful, since they'll sometimes actually prefer their items to drop into their grave piles on death. We’ve created a new toggle in the Settings menu which will let them opt out of this protection. Note that this applies only to PvM deaths; item loss on a PvP death is not affected.

Additionally, we’ve fixed some interactions between Dizana’s Quiver and ammunition:
  • Karil's Bolt Racks no longer hinders using the bolts.
  • The Sunlight Crossbow and its Bolts should now work with the Dizana's Quiver, counting as a bolt and giving the correct bonuses.
  • Having the Mithril Grapple inside Dizana's or a regular Quiver no longer causes issues, and lets the player shoot Crossbow Bolts as intended.

We’ve also made changes to Shades of Mort’ton:

Last but not least, some further miscellaneous improvements:
  • Added XP lamps to the rewards from the Beekeeper random event.

Membership Code Vouchers Change

On Monday we released a blog informing players that it is no longer possible to convert Bonds to Membership Passcodes.

We made this difficult decision because some rulebreakers were using this system to violate our TOS.

Don’t worry – if you already have a passcode from an existing Bond redemption, it will still be valid, and you're still able to redeem a Bond directly for 14 days of Membership, as normal.

For more information, please check the full post.

RuneScape: Untold Tales of the Godwars

We’re making our comic book series debut with Titan Comics! RuneScape: Untold Tales of the God Wars is a four-part mini-series which launches with a special oversized 48-page bumper Issue #1 (complete with five different cover variants) on October 9th!

The series, which was teased last year in Titan’s Free Comic Book Day edition, is penned by Void Trip writer Ryan O’Sullivan, with artists Sid Kotian (Gambit, The Adventures of Apocalypse Al) and Daniel Bayliss (RuneScape FCBD edition). Expanding on the epic lore behind the iconic God Wars Dungeon, this new comic book series will delve into the Temple of Lost Ancients during the catastrophic God Wars – where the armies of Saradomin, Armadyl, Bandos and Zamorak are fighting for control of the Godsword, the only weapon capable of killing a deity. RuneScape: Untold Tales of the God Wars features the forgotten histories of fan-favourite characters, as well as telling stories you’ve never heard before - including that of Maro, trapped in the centre of this world-shaking conflict, who dreams of breaking free from his master’s clutches...

Legendary OSRS player completes 'impossible' no-damage fire cape run

To paraphrase Roy Batty's immortal monologue from the end of Blade Runner, I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Half-Life completed in less than 20 minutes. The entire Souls series, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring beaten without being hit even once. The world of speed and challenge runs is home to the most incredible feats of videogaming in history, and now, we have a new icon, as one dedicated, determined, and peerlessly skilled OSRS player manages to obtain the elusive fire cape without taking a single point of damage. People said it couldn't be done. But with enough Old School RuneScape knowledge and a dogmatic devotion to the MMORPG, anything, it seems, is possible.

Deadman: Armageddon Feedback

Deadman Armageddon is in full swing, and we're excitedly watching your progress across social channels, YouTube, and Twitch! If you’re looking to earn some points, snag some cosmetics, and have a scary good time trying PvP, it’s not too late to jump in! We’ve seen loads of folks racking up the points this week, so you’re in good company.

As this is a time-limited event, we’ve been making some speedy hotfixes already:
  • The Infernal chef now gives Cooked Karambwan as opposed to Poisoned.
  • If the cyclops room in the Warriors’ Guild is particularly crowded, you'll see more cyclops spawn.
  • Players can no longer roll the Skilling Supply loot table while mining Rune Essence, and can no longer chop undead trees. This change is brought to you by an extremely low-effort way of mining Sigils that we felt was too strong to live.
  • The doors in the Grand Tree no longer change locations on Deadman worlds.
  • You will no longer receive Skilling Supply Loot when in an instance.

This week brings a handful of other fixes:
  • Significantly increased the rate of the Bleed effect on Morrigan’s Javelin, and increased damage per hit to 10.
  • The UI now correctly reflects the remaining time before this year's Deadman ends.
  • Removed warning messages that played when players attuned to Sigil of the Fortune Farmer interacted with Impling Jars.
  • Increased quantity of Breach NPCs at Region Breaches.
  • Updated Slayer Points required to choose a Task when using the Sigil of Slaughter from 30 to 60.
    • Players with less than 90 Slayer Points will be warned that they won’t have enough points to cancel a selected Task.
  • When attempting to log in to a Deadman world with W45 data, players will now be informed that they must reset their Permanent Deadman account with Nigel in Lumbridge.
  • Deadman Tournament accounts, specially one Defence pures, can now progress through Heroes’ Quest. Normal Deadman and other normal accounts remain unchanged.

We’re continuing to monitor Bank Keys and will work to remove (where possible) ‘junk’ items that have an inexplicably high value.

Hopefully these changes will make your Deadman journey a bit smoother! We’ll be keeping an eye out throughout the tournament for any other bugs that pop up.

We're also reducing the number of Deadman worlds, to ensure you're more likely to run into other players. This week we've removed:

3-50
  • USW: 142, 238, 241, 242
  • USE: 172,173
  • UK: 107, 108, 203, 204
  • DE: 162, 250, 251, 256
  • AU: 293, 294

51-70
  • USW: 138, 139
  • USE: 104, 170
  • DE: 158, 160
  • AU: 291

Don’t forget, you have until 12:00 Noon BST on August 2nd to build up your points for the new cosmetic rewards, or to get yourself into the higher combat brackets. Good luck! There’s a slice of our massive prize pool up for grabs, as well as these exclusive winners’ medals…

You could win yourselves one of these medals designed by AngelsScapes!

Then, tune in to the Grand Finale on Saturday, August 3rd live on Twitch at 18:00 BST, where we'll be trying out a brand new format: five finales across five combat brackets, giving everybody an opportunity to optimise their builds and compete like never before.

In the meantime, you can commemorate your Deadman experience with this official logo pin and special Armageddon edition of the Armadyl Godsword keyring from AngelsScapes. The AGS just got even more deadly - and the pin is a replica of the Winners’ Medals!

The pin and keyring are available from the Official Merch Store now.

While Guthix Sleeps Feedback

This week we've made some highly anticipated changes to While Guthix Sleeps!

First of all, a return to an idea we pitched in last week's newspost. We discovered an error that gave players 100% Accuracy against tormented demons, which negatively affected weapon variety and power. To offset this effect, we suggested lowering the demons’ stats while increasing their Magic Defence bonus to compensate. We also planned to have Demonbane weapons reduce their Defence by at least 5%. However, after taking your feedback on board, we’ve decided not to make these changes. We understand that the community has already developed strategies for the existing mechanics, and that you love the unique element it adds to the combat. We’ll still look for small tweaks we can make, but for now, the tormented demons will keep their stats and we won't be fixing the accuracy bug.

We do, however, have some other exciting changes this week – including the addition of a teleport item to the tormented demons’ loot table, which will cut Bank runs significantly.

We’ve also made it easier to see how many demons can be fought in each room with a new multiway combat icon.

In the same vein, we’ve made some general additions to the items available during the quest, to reduce running back and forth to fetch new ones:
  • Added a chest to Movario’s base which contains the Runes needed for the door puzzle. They will appear there only once.
  • Thaerisk will now give out a Snapdragon Seed for free rather than charging for it. He still only gives one.
  • Sapphire Lanterns are no longer destroyed on death.
  • Akrisae will now provide a one-time teleport to Ice Mountain for the Black Knight section and will also remind you they need a disguise to enter the fortress.
  • When working on the Herblore puzzle in the Guthixian Temple, the corresponding alternate ingredients will now be returned to you. So, for example, if you place a herb on a statue that already has one, the first herb will be given back.

We’ve also made a few changes to dialogue and text in the quest which bring it more in line with the OG version from RuneScape – although you’ll still notice a few key variations due to the big differences in our wider lore.

Finally, Lucien has had a makeover! He now looks suitably menacing and has put on a bit of muscle, too – no easy feat when you’re a skeleton!

Now, for this week’s smaller changes:
Combat
• The skeletons in Lucien’s camp will now always be aggressive once Lucien has spotted you, regardless of any disguise. They won’t be fooled twice!
  • All tiles around the Guthixian symbol can now be walked on without issues.
  • Mark of Darkness will now last 5 times longer if the Purging Staff is equipped when cast.
  • Elite dark warriors, rangers and mages have been given Melee, Ranged, and Magic Defence stats.
Visual
• Laidee Gnonock now has updated animations and bulkier armour.
  • Recoloured the Balance Elemental and the fight with Surok to make them more accessible for colourblind players.
  • Flames can no longer be seen from the floor below during a certain boss fight.
  • Adjusted the consistency of certain NPC chat heads to reflect the story progression.
  • Resolved a graphical issue affecting Emberlight.
Player Owned House
• Elite Black Armour and the Dark Squall Robes can now be stored in your Costume Room, if you have one.
  • Your Broav can now wander free within your Player Owned House! He isn't technically a pet, but we assure you he's perfectly happy there.
Other
• You can now use Runes from your Rune Pouch for the Teleorb to reach Lucien's camp.
  • Emberlight can now be used for the Master Clue Scroll step as a stand-in for Arclight, and can now be added to your STASH unit.
  • We've ensured that no matter which item you select to use first, you'll always be able to forge the Arclight when combining items.
  • Updated NPC contact options have been updated to reflect new NPCs.
  • The Oneiromancer will now acknowledge a certain NPC’s tragic death.
Drop Rates
As is tradition, we'd like to share the drop rates for the unique items you can get your hands on from the tormented demons.
  • Tormented Synapse: 1/500
  • Burning Claw: 1/500
  • Guthixian Teleport: 1/12

Drop table order:
  • Roll for a Tormented Synapse
    • If not, roll for a Burning Claw
      • If not, roll for a unique supply drop (Smouldering items)
        • If not, roll for regular loot
