RuneScape gets its first new combat skill in 20 years

Four score and twenty years ago, Jagex released RuneScape, the fantasy MMORPG that paved the way for the likes of World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV. Now in 2023, over two decades from release, RuneScape is finally adding its first new combat skill, Necromancy, and it's available to play right now.

July Patch Week - This Week in RuneScape

Fresh off of Game Jam this update is chock full of patch notes!

With Necromancy's launch date getting closer, we have begun releasing weekly Insights to help get you up to speed! Our first blog is all about Rituals. Light a candle for our ghostly friends!

Our next Insights release will focus on the story and lore associated with Necromancy! This will launch with a video and blog this Thursday, so keep your eyes peeled.

We've shown you our rework concepts for the Soul Dye item, and today we're delighted to show off its new look!

This new approach combines your favourite bits of the concepts we shared with a new animated texture, which has also been tuned to be slower and more readable. You should be able to pick out each individual ghoulish grimace!

We hope this new design is more in line with your expectations. We really appreciate all your feedback.

Although you can view the new design at the Parcels from the Dead area, the Soul Dye itself has not been updated in this week's update. We're still busy working behind the scenes to bring the updated look to all other dyeable items, as well as the ones on display in the event area.

We expect to release the new-and-improved Soul Dye on July 17th. Please remember that when the new Dye releases, it will override the existing Soul Dye on any items it's applied to.
Parcels From The Dead Event Extension
Since the Soul Dye update won't arrive by July 17th, we're extending the event by one week, until July 24th. More time to get your hands on the Soul Dye!

Wednesday July 12th | 16:00 Game Time | Hooli's Max Party plus Dead and Buried Reward Preview

Join us for a brief preview of the rewards to come in Dead and Buried, our next Quest, before we join Mod Hooli as he hits Max live on stream!

Watch the show live at Twitch.TV/RuneScape. If you'd like to join the in-game Max Party, head to World 139 at Prifddinas' Yew Trees - then onto the Max Guild!

All events below reward bonus Last Wills for the ongoing Parcels From The Dead event.

Starts July 6th | Ends July 10th | Double Dragon Chests

Mighty dragon power... multiplied! Dragon Chests randomly replace standard chests and each one grants a prize multiplier!

Starts July 11th | Ends July 17th | Vault of the Dead

The Vault of the Dead creaks open to reveal a pile of crystal chests! Find the Undead Diamond Chests for big drops of Last Wills, GP or even the Soul Dye itself as a reward!

Woodcutters' Grove & Parcels from the Dead - This Week In RuneScape

Lots of options this week - will you answer the call of departed souls of the underworld for delightfully dark rewards? Or are you going to be more #lumbercore and set up a new Woodcutting haven at Fort Forinthry?

So, you’ve successfully defended Fort Forinthry from hordes of the undead - now it’s time to establish a steady supply of resources so your operations can continue to grow! Fortifications must be built and maintained, and you certainly can’t afford a wood shortage.

Introducing your new training area - The Woodcutters’ Grove! Set up your sustainable one-stop chopping trove east of the Fort, and level it up to access more trees. Use the new Wood Boxes and Wood Spirits to harvest logs en-masse, and train your way towards the brand-new tier 80 Imcando Hatchet!

Check out the full blog for all the details ewe wood possibly need. Or check out this quick guide to the Grove
https://www.youtube.com/embed/CjusZwgaOKA
When you’re ready to start, meet with Aster or Bill at the Fort. Remember, you’ll need to complete the Unwelcome Guests quest first. Chop chop!

With the addition of these new Planks and Frames, we have also rebalanced the Forts Core Buildings material costs.

These changes are being made so we can substantially increase the XP for making the higher Tier buildings in order to make this a viable training method for Construction as intended. To compensate, the material cost has been increased.

There’s trouble at the Post Office - when isn’t there? - but this time it’s deadly serious. Postie Pete has lost the unfulfilled Last Wills of the dearly departed!

Help gather up the Wills while you’re out skilling, completing daily tasks, or using your Treasure Hunter keys. Once you've gathered a few you can bring them to the Petes outside Death's Domain at Draynor Village. Then you can trade them in for Forgotten Belongings! These are the jumbled-up possessions of the deceased that have ended up in Lost Property.

Forgotten Belongings come in four varieties: Small (White), Medium (Blue), Large (Purple), and Soulful (Gold). And they contain some rewards to die for!

Here’s what you might find:
Soul Dye
Make your swag extra soulful with this luminescent dye! It can be found in any of the belongings, but is guaranteed from Soulful Belongings (you may even find double in there!)
Soul Witch Outfit
Chaos? So last season. Now it’s all about the Soul - and what better way to showcase that you have plenty than with this Witchy getup!
Titles
Some of the deceased left their titles behind when they passed on. Hey, you can't take it with you... Pick up 'Forgotten', ‘The Life and Soul’ and ‘Ensouled’ titles from the belongings.

Rummaging in Lost Property will also yield a variety of postal-themed bits and bobs that the Petes have accumulated over the years.

Speak to the two Petes at the entrance to Death's Office, near the Draynor Lodestone, to get started.

Parcels From The Dead starts today (June 19th) and runs until July 17th. There will be an extra week after the event ends to hand in any remaining Last Wills.

Oh, and remember to check in with the Petes daily to receive bonus belongings for your troubles!

In April we asked you about some changes to the Trimmed Completionist Cape. As of next week's update (June 26th), the Master Quest Cape, Reaper Crew and full Globetrotter Outfit will be folded into the requirements for the TCC.

We will not be adding 'Are You Winning, Zam? II' to the Cape, nor renaming either the Completionist or Trimmed Completionist Capes at this time.

Thank you all for your involvement in these polls! If have any suggestions for other Cape updates, please let us know.

Patch Week & FSOA/AD Changes - This Week In RuneScape

We're still processing Necromancy reveal week, so it's a quick one today - but we've got some FSoA and Animate Dead updates, and a few other patches too!

Recently we've been cooking up some changes to the Fractured Staff of Armadyl and Animate Dead, in order to address their impact on combat design. With the help and feedback of the community, these changes will go live from today!

If you want to understand a little more about our thinking, check out this post outlining the ideas behind these changes. Otherwise, head on down to the Patch Notes section for the highlights!

We're conducting some planned maintenance to all game world servers on Tuesday June 6th. This will begin at 10:00am BST (9:00 Game Time) and last approximately 3 hours. During this time access to the website may also be affected.

Starts June 6th | Ends June 7th | Genie's Wishes

Be careful what you wish for... you might just get it! Find Karima in your chest to have your wish come true, or enhance your next wish for even greater rewards. Oh, and you won't even need to find Karima after claiming a wish to get start on your next wish!

Starts June 8th | Ends June 14th | Assassin's Return

Assassins are in high demand once again, and that means a series of contracts for you to deal with! Complete the contracts to get your hands on the Faceless Assassin outfits - or even that much sought-after Assassin Walk animation!
Combat Changes
• The Fractured Staff of Armadyl's special attack has been modified:
    • The buff on the player no longer fires an additional autoattack after landing a critical hit, instead triggering a time strike which deals 60-120% ability damage.
    • Critical hits caused by time strikes do not trigger further time strikes.
  • Animate Dead now cannot reduce damage by more than 60% (down from 75%).
    • Damage reduction now uses 25% of defence level (formerly 33%).
    • Damage reduction now only works against core damage types - Melee, Ranged and Magic and will no longer work against typeless damage, poisons, reflections or any other bespoke damage type.
General
• Movement abilities can now be used in Temple Trekking, Troll Invasion, The Tale of the Muspah first cave and Flash Powder Factory areas.
  • The Dominion Tower Reward Chest items are not spilling over the assigned area, the Inventory is limited to 30 items and no Scroll Bar is displayed.
  • Sarah's dialogue now accurately explains the Coconut Shy and Hook-a-Duck activities during the Beach Event.

DXP Continues & Max Cash Dev Update - This Week In RuneScape

Mark your calendars, the Necromancy reveal is coming - plus some very special insider insights from you, the players!

We're now just over one week away from finally revealing Necromancy gameplay! It will arrive on May 30th in a lengthy and detailed Necromancy First Look video - plus another little something extra we'd like to tell you about now....

Last week, we did something we've never done with a skill before. We gave players a hands-on with the skill, pre-launch, to inject a healthy dose of player feedback! Over two days, we had the absolute pleasure of hosting a group of RuneScape Creators in the studio as they were introduced to Necromancy, played experiences from it* and gave us their feedback to help guide the later stages of its development.

Not only did we want feedback from the Creators, but we also wanted them to be able to share their experience with all of you. All our Creators were able to capture their own gameplay footage and will be able to share it - including their impressions - right after our Necromancy: First Look video finishes on May 30th!

While their content doesn't comprehensively cover the entirety of the skill - we're still very much in active development! - there's still LOTS of ground to cover, all told in their own words and from their own hands-on experiences.

This was a really important step for all of us on the RuneScape team. We've been looking to amplify player voices in our development process - Necromancy is built with this mantra in mind, but this trip gave us an opportunity to get valuable perspectives we can only usually get once a skill is released into the wild. We hope you're as excited as we are about it!
Mark Your Calendars
So you don't miss a thing with next week's reveal, here's a rundown of when and where you'll need to be if you're looking to catch the news as it happens:
Necromancy First Look - May 30th at 5PM BST (4PM Game Time)
Join us for a big look at Necromancy for the first time, as we share our vision for the skill in an 8+ minute video packed with developer insights and gameplay. We'll be debuting the video as a YouTube Premier on YouTube.com/RuneScape - be there at 4pm Game Time to share the moment with fellow 'Scapers and J-Mods in the live chat!
Necromancy Creator Coverage - May 30th at 5:10PM BST (4:10PM Game Time)
Minutes after the Necromancy First Look finishes, our crack-team of Creators will begin sharing their experiences, gameplay and VLOGs from their trip to Jagex last week. Here's who they are and where to find them:
  • Protoxx
  • TheRSGuy
  • Maikeru
  • EvilLucario
  • Omid
  • Chevalric
  • Wazzy
  • Waydot

For those not looking to miss a thing, you may want to drop a Subscribe or Follow - while you can expect instant content from each Creator at the time above, they are free to continue releasing further content from their experience at any time!
Necromancy First Look: Developer Panel Livestream - May 31st at 5PM BST (4PM Game Time)
With a reveal this big, we're sure you'll have plenty of questions and discussions you want to have with J-Mods! We'll be live on Twitch.TV/RuneScape to discuss what we've revealed, respond to hot topics from your initial reactions and answer some of your questions.
What Comes Next?
This is only the first stop on the road to Necromancy - there are still plenty of stories left to tell. As development nears it's final stage, we'll be confirming our release date, giving you more insight into the lore and diving into even more detail on aspects of the skill as we lock down the finer details in development. This will be the most comprehensive look at a skill ever, but balanced with maintaining that magic of discovery in the early days of a skill release.

*Note: We have taken steps to ensure the 99 / 120 Level Races will remain as fair as possible, balanced with enabling meaningful player feedback and exciting player perspectives to hear about ahead of the release of a skill. We'll discuss this more in the Necromancy First Look - Developer Panel stream on May 31st.

The release of the Max Cash Update will raise the 2.1b coin limit on your Money Pouch, G.E Trades, Gold Stacks and more to address this long-standing request from the community!

While we're happy to confirm content development has completed on the project, it's also required extensive testing, which has revealed issues in the engine development. These will need to be addressed. Engine releases tends to take longer and need much more testing than content-based work - which means we're now highly unlikely to be able to release this in May as we mentioned in the Development Update.

We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting this one and this will come as a disappointment. The Development Update is all about transparency, with the risk of things being subject to change, so we want to give you the latest timeline on our estimated delivery - which is now June 12th. If the release date gets confirmed or the timeline changes in any way, we'll be sure to let you know. Thanks for your understanding as we make sure we launch this right.

The Jagex Accounts team have been hard at work following the release of the Open Beta, and now there's even more good news - based on your feedback, a Jagex Account can now support up to 20 characters rather than the previous limit of 10!

For those of you who haven't made the jump yet, Jagex Accounts are the new modernised account system offering the maximum security for your RuneScape account. Jagex Accounts offer security benefits like email verification, support for stronger passwords, enhanced recovery, added Bot protections, notifications via email and more - all under one significantly more secure account for all your characters.

The Open Beta is available now - find out how to upgrade here.
