Mobile Lobby Updates & Raptor's Rampage Continues - This Week In RuneScape

The social lobby for mobile arrives today, and we've got new cosmetic overrides up for grabs at the Academy of Heroes!

Mobile players have been requesting a social lobby for a long time, and today we're happy to announce – you’ve got it!

Your social lobby lets you access your friends, clan chat and more, just like you can on desktop.

Check it out today on all of RuneScape's mobile platforms!

Don’t forget to check out Raptor's Rampage, which continues until the 22nd of January! Head down to War's Retreat and grab your daily buff. Once activated the next boss kill will get three rolls on the rare drop table.

While a few things are exempt from this buff (Telos and Arch Glacor due to their streak mechanics, and any bosses without a rare loot table), it does affect raids and will be consumed on use there.

Academy of Heroes: Treasure Hunter is back with brand new cosmetic overrides! Use keys to deal damage to enemies and snatch rewards - plus bonus loot for defeating them! Each key you use will give you the chance to nab one of the new Cosmetic Override Scrolls. Plus, if you lucky (unlucky?) enough to come across the Echo of Zamorak, you'll get a guaranteed drop of all three new cosmetic overrides when defeated.

Since we were already working on these new cosmetic overrides, we took the opportunity to update the standard Berserk animation, giving it even more pizzazz - it launches today, free for all players! Check it out:

Now, onto the new overrides! There are three to be found within the Academy of Heroes.

First up is a Chaotic version of the newly updated Berserk animation:

Next, amp up your Hurricanes with the new Chaotic Hurricane override:

Or channel some blue dwarf vibes with the Azure Sunshine override!

Academy of Heroes launches January 19th and runs until January 25th.

We're conducting some planned maintenance to local game world servers on January 17th.

The following worlds will be offline from 11:00 Game Time, with work planned for approximately 5 hours.

Quick reminder for members! Every day you log in, or hour you play, will earn you a Pirate Key for Frank's Free Chest – with a max of 12 up for grabs each week.

Head to Port Sarim to meet with Frank, spend your keys and score a random selection of loot. If you're very lucky that could mean Uncharted Island Maps or 100 Million GP!

Earn keys until January 31st and claim your loot from February 1st.

  • Nex: Angel of Death Chest drop rate has been improved. Chests will now drop in order, with any 'gaps' unlocked before being randomised there after.
  • Bow of the Last Guardian's auto attack damage is now correctly calculated.
    • Dev Comment : All weapons of the same level should have equal damage values, meaning that DPM is the same regardless of style. The Bow of the Last Guardian was set up incorrectly so the bow itself was doing all of the damage of a level 95 weapon, and then the damage from the arrows was being added on top for even more! This bug was limited to auto-attacks, so for those of you who have been using abilities you should notice minimal difference overall. - Mod Daze
  • Being teleported by Legio Quartus no longer results in being unable to move for a few seconds.
  • Globetrotter Jacket now takes players to the correct location when using the compass clue leading to the eastern part of Mort Myre swamp.

  • Gate added in the Graveyard of Shadows.
  • Leaving the life alter no longer clears stat effects.
  • Aurora variants of Power armours can now be upgraded.
  • Players can enter the Cooking Guild with any of the following capes: Trimmed Inverted Cooking Cape, Inverted Cooking Cape, Inverted Master Cooking Cape, Cooking Cape.

Reduced Death Costs & Raptor's Rampage Event! - This Week In RuneScape

It’s 2023 and we’re kicking the year off in style – we’re finally reducing death costs, giving you even more freedom to experiment and push yourself further than ever before! Plus, there’s a new special event to help you score some rare boss drops. Happy new year indeed…

Move over January sales, because the only reductions we care about right now are on permanent death costs!

Yes, the long-awaited death cost changes are finally here, making the final frontier less punishing to your wallet for the year ahead. If costs have prevented you from experimenting with bossing in the past, there's no better time to try something new for 2023!

With today's update, death will cost at least 80% less compared to before. The Ring of Death also gets an update to keep it viable: die and you'll be reborn in place on the battlefield, but with a three-minute debuff that deals incrementally increasing tick damage. Finish that boss kill quickly or get to safety before it overwhelms you!

Today also marks the arrival of Grand Exchange Tariffs. With over 60% of gold drain coming through deaths, we needed to balance the economy to support the new death costs. Now, 2% of gold from all sales on the GE will be taken by the tariff to cover the gap.

Oh, and there’s more. While it won’t launch with today's update, we’ll soon be introducing an engine update that will enable sales over the current Max Cash limits! Stay tuned for more news on that in the near future.

If you'd like to go into lots of juicy number-crunching detail on the death cost reduction and GE Tariff specifics, check out the recent lovely maths-y post: Here

Now cheaper death costs have kicked away your January blues, why not sink your teeth into our brand new special event?

Raptor has arrived at War's Retreat to offer a handy buff that can be activated once a day!

Once it’s up and running, your next boss kill will get three rolls on the bosses rare drop table – that means more chances to grab those elusive boss drops!

A few exceptions:
  • Telos and Arch-Glacor will not be subject to this benefit due to their Streak mechanics.
  • Raids receive a flat percentage increase for loot and do not consume the buff.
  • Bosses without rare loot will not be affected or consume the buff.

The Raptor’s Rampage is on until January 22nd!

Don’t forget, an extra members-only event is already underway: have you visited Frank's Free Chest yet?

Every day you log in, or hour you play, will earn you a Pirate Key – with a max of 12 up for grabs each week.

Head to Frank, who has set up shop at Port Sarim, to spend your keys and score a random selection of loot. Who knows, it might even include Uncharted Island Maps or 100 Million GP!

Frank's Free Chest runs until January 31st.
General
• You must now complete the Succession quest to use Dive in theoretically any circumstances. Ability no longer can be used despite not being unlocked when placed on action bar
  • Worst Witch Grimoire Achievement blocker has been corrected and should correctly display progress
  • Applied a long-term solution to being unable to bank bankable items from the 'Choose your prize' interface while a bonus reward is present alongside Wrapping Paper in Treasure Hunter
  • Guthixian High Druid (World Wakes) - the World Guardian title has been remove
  • Khnum - removed the clear title option
  • Fixed an issue that caused script errors when Festive Aura was replacing the Portable Snowfall aura

Presents From The Sledge - This Week In RuneScape

We’ve made it ‘Scapers – it’s the final update for 2022! Read on for all the info about our Christmas events, plus a cheeky sneaky-peeky at what’s coming next year. Have a fantastic festive break and we’ll see you again on January 9th!

Postie Pete and Parcel Pete have once again made an absolute turkey of the most important task of the year – wrapping the presents! Will you be the one to save Christmas?

Play to earn Wrapping Paper and unlock festive rewards, including the stunning new Aurora Dye! You also get a free present each day simply by chatting to the hosts. ‘Tis the season, after all...

This might be our last update of the year, but there's so much to do for the rest of the month – the Legacy of Zamorak finale quest, the Winter Yak Track and more! Get the full story on Presents From The Sledge and see everything else that’s going on in our special December-tastic newspost: Here!

Santa's Grotto returns from December 23rd to January 4th, and it's full of festive prizes!

Dive in and collect all manner of Christmas cosmetics, including tradeable rare Green Santa Outfit pieces for that chic, seasonal look. These items look especially great paired with the Green Santa Hat, if you were able to nab that already! (While pictured together, please be aware the Green Santa Hat is NOT in the Grotto this year).

You can also collect three gaudy-but-desirable Christmas jumper designs featuring Guthix, Penguins and Chinchompas! They’re worse than anything grandma could knit, and they’re an absolute must-have for the season.

And don't forget, you receive extra Wrapping Paper for Presents From The Sledge with every Key used, so be sure that you make a visit Santa’s Grotto this Christmas!

A small members-only event will kick things off next year, ahead of our first full update on January 9th. Look out for Frank’s Free Chest from January 4th!

This piratey version of Frank has set up shop in Port Sarim and he’s got the booty! No… the other kind of booty (though to be fair, maybe both).

Head to the stall from January 4th to earn Pirate Keys: you get one every day on login, and then another one per hour of play, with a maximum of 12 to be earned each week in total.

Spend your Pirate Keys at the Chest to earn luscious loot such as Uncharted Island Maps (including the Red one!), 100 million GP, Dragon Tools and more. Ironman players can get their mitts on all prizes except for the Dragon Tools and GP.

While any Pirate Keys will go to your Inventory on login, you can also store them in your Currency Pouch – any Keys earned through playtime will go straight there. This means you won’t have to inventory-manage in the middle of a boss battle or other such shenanigans!

Aside from being a small added thanks to all you 'Scapers for you dedication, this event is also a test for us to see how we can reward your time more flexibly. We'll be keen to hear your thoughts as we go!

Start earning Pirate Keys and laying claim to Frank's Free Chest in Port Sarim, right in front of the Rusty Anchor Pub, beginning January 4th until January 31st 2023. You'll be able to use your Keys up any time before February 28th 2023.

For the past few days you've been busy deciphering clues and getting a glimpse of what's to come in RuneScape next year. Exciting!

So far you've uncovered the details of January's Death Costs update (and hints of a new event at War's Retreat), the first scraps of an upcoming storyline and some intriguing new Construction skilling methods. Check out everything that's already been revealed here: https://RS.Game/2023SneakPeek.

We’ve got one more secret left. Are you ready? It's a juicy one. Tune in to our livestream on December 13th at 16:00 for the big reveal. You won't want to miss this!

To sign out the year, we'll also have a letter from RuneScape's Executive Producer. Look out for that on December 19th…

Fresh Start Worlds will be available throughout the holiday season and plenty of rewards are still up for grabs, including the Alternative Skill Capes, Halo of Returning and more!

Over the coming weeks, the XP boosts will continue to decrease as FSW comes closer and closer to operating like the main game. You'll still have Free Deaths, 20% chances to double a monster or boss drop, 40% chance to double gathered Materials, +100% Accuracy in combat and access to all Tier 5 Auras.

Fresh Start Worlds will fully come to a close on January 9th, at which point all characters will be automatically transferred (with any eligible items) over to the main game. You can also leave earlier at any time too, of course!

We've loved all the stories, videos and images that have come from FSW over the past three months. Whether you played it yourself, convinced a friend to try or return to RuneScape, or simply continued on in the main game – thank you – and remember to always keep it Fresh!
General
The login screen music has been updated to A Song of Hope.To fit within the free-to-play skill cap, and to make it more accessible in general, the requirement for Dive, Escape and Surge has been lowered from 30 Agility to 5 Agility. You must now complete Succession quest to use Dive in any circumstances.Completing the Succession musical finale, including replay, now applies the Dungeoneering Strange Power animation to the player, with a forced camera angle. The Daemonheim enemies in the Mage Arena combat challenge of the Succession quest now have significantly more lifepoints.Revolution now supports untargeted Agility abilities, so Escape and Surge can once again be put on a Revolution bar, if that's how you roll!Added blocking to a segment of the fence surrounding the KBD enclosure near the Wilderness Lava Maze. (In the Wildy, the best defence is a good of-fence).Smithing Argonlike armour during the Succession quest now gives token Smithing XP.Only the anvil near the Mage Arena can be used to smith Argonlike equipment. The Escape ability is no longer hidden in the Ranged ability book when the Magic spellbook is filtered.Removed additional bodies of dead Cultists in the Senntisten prison scene of Succession. Always dispose of the evidence…Corrected the progress boost message in Yak Track: The Winter Trials to now state the correct tier at which it was unlocked.Added bounds checking to the Quest List to prevent an issue where its contents were squished by an invalid sorting.Fixed an issue which caused the Festive Aura XP cap message to be displayed after every login.Fixed the washed-out appearance of some outfits while in Prifddinas.Hotfix: Lowered the up time of the 'feeling pumped' modifier in Shattered Worlds.
  • Dev Note: This temporary change was made due to increasingly excessive XP rates players had been receiving in conjunction with recent changes to special attacks. The change is considered temporary, whilst the team is investigating more in depth resolutions to the XP issues.

'Succession' Quest & Winter Trials Yak Track! - This Week In RuneScape

It’s like Christmas come early: the final quest of the year lands today, and the new winter Yak Track is here too! Here’s everything you need to know.

This is it – the final quest of 2022. It’s time for Succession!

This adventure closes out the Legacy of Zamorak storyline. Team up with Adrasteia and help her track down Bilrach before he completes his ritual and becomes unstoppable!

Conquer this quest and you'll get access to the mobility heaven that is the Dive ability – an alternative version of Bladed Dive that can be used by all combat styles in any situation where you can't currently use that classic move.

You’ll also earn a host of XP rewards and the final Infernal Puzzle Box upgrade!

To begin your quest, speak with Adrasteia in Falador.

Requirements:

  • Daughter of Chaos Quest completed.
  • Infernal Puzzle Box Tier 5 unlocked (i.e. you’ve completed Civil War miniquests I-III).
  • 60 Mining and Smithing.

Our latest Yak Track lands today, packed with new winter-themed cosmetics and bonuses! Either optimise your play through task chasing, or simply reap rewards for your usual activities with ‘skill and chill’ tasks at every level!

Get your mitts on some ice-cool rewards including combat overrides, frosty pets, Fremennik and Mahjarrat-themed cosmetics and more.

This time we’re also introducing a brand-new currency – just the thing to spend in the equally shiny new Yak Track Shop!

Earn Yak Coins every five tasks and from repeatable end tasks. Then head to the new shop and browse every cosmetic item from Yak Track 2 to Yak Track 10! This new store is your one-stop shop for all things Yak, so all existing Yak Track items in the Oddments Store will be moving here too.

Got all the retro swag you needed the first time? There are alternative versions of some of the new cosmetics and XP boosts that you can pick up there too.

Remember, Coins expire one week after the Track finishes, so make sure you use them up!

Yak Track: The Winter Trials runs from today until Jan 29th.

We're conducting some planned maintenance to local game world servers in Las Vegas and Sydney on December 6th.

Worlds based in Las Vegas and Sydney will be offline from 11:00 Game Time, with work planned for approximately 5 hours.

No other worlds will be offline, and no other disruptions are expected.

Have you been opening your doors yet? Remember that you get a free Key each time, so it’s well worth keeping your daily appointment. And on top of that, opening 15 doors this month will get you the Portable Snowfall Aura override!

20 more days to go…

Here's this week's XP rates and bonuses:

  • Changed from last week: +100% XP (skills below level 70).
  • Changed from last week: +50% XP (skills above level 70).
  • Continuation of Free Deaths.
  • 20% chance to double a monster or boss drop.
  • 40% chance to double gathered materials.
  • Tier 5 Auras unlocked.
  • +100% Accuracy in combat.
General
• Players will receive a one-off Daily Challenge Reward Box the first time they log in. More details here.
  • Plant Power configuration now works with the Trollheim herb patch.
  • Damage and accuracy tooltips on objects now use numerical separators.
  • The Healer role at Barbarian Assault will once again be rewarded the correct type of points.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented completion of the ‘Staff on Stryke’ achievement.
  • The Tome of XP awarded for completing the Branches of Darkmeyer quest no longer halves the amount of Invention XP received.
  • Players will now approach the cliff side on the Wilderness Agility Course in a sensible manner.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed player to bypass building a whirligig flower basket.
  • Removed force-walk tiles next to the Grand Exchange.
  • Fixed an issue which caused the Spirit Tree’s Grand Exchange teleport to place the player inside Christmas presents. You’re a gift, but not like that…
  • The clipping and animation issues for Crux Eqal robes have been fixed.
  • Updated login and lobby to support the Jagex Launcher.
  • Moved a couple of gargoyles near the furnace in the ruins east of the Wilderness crater who had a tendency to disrupt smelting.
  • Kolodion, master of the Mage Arena, now has a spine capable of bending.
  • The Persistent Rage relic now generates adrenaline when outside of combat, as the infernal puzzle box prevents adrenaline drain when outside of combat.
  • When your adrenaline is full, an activated adrenaline urn now stores adrenaline generated by the Persistent Rage relic.
  • The Escape and Surge abilities now require 30 Agility instead of 30 Ranged and Magic respectively, so that movement abilities do not require combat skills.
Graphical Updates
• Winter is coming and Mod Blkwitch has been up to snow good in the frozen north of the deep wilderness. She's also updated the Mage Arena inside and out.
  • Mahjarrat ritual markers have been graphically updated.
  • The soul altar and Magister's boss arena maps have had a lighting improvement pass.
Achievements
• Added an I've Got a Little List (of Miniquests) meta achievement in the Lore category, which requires all miniquests in the Quest List.
    • Completionist cape and master quest cape now require this miniquest achievement, instead of each listing individual miniquest achievements. This is to ensure comp and MQC consistently require all quests and miniquests.
      • Consequently removed these miniquests from the trimmed completionist cape, since it requires the completionist cape which requires this miniquest meta achievement which requires these miniquests: Desert Slayer Dungeon, Sheep Shearer, Tales of Nomad, Tales of the God Wars, Witch's Potion.
  • As there's already a meta achievement for Fremennik Sagas (Bridge over Fremmy Waters), also moved it into the Lore category.
  • The Chef's Assistant quest is now listed alphabetically in the Quest Cape requirements. Also removed "A", "The" prefixes from various miniquest achievement names so that they're unambiguously alphabetised.
  • Renamed the miniquest achievement Benedict's World Tour, Part 2 to Benedict's World Tour (miniquest) to match all the other miniquests listed in I've Got a Little List (of Miniquests).
  • The Twilight of the Gods achievement now uses the Twilight of the Gods quest icon, rather than the City of Senntisten quest icon.
Quest Season
• Created a Legacy of Zamorak season in the Quest Series sort.
  • Since they require Extinction, added Twilight of the Gods and the Aftermath miniquest to the end of the Elder God Wars quest series.
Quest List
• We've removed the Difficulty field from the quest overview screen and quest sort. Quest lists sorted by difficulty on login should change to the Timeline sort.
    • Dev note : When developing quests, we place them in a difficulty bracket solely due to their skill requirements (eg our definition of a Grandmaster is that it has 80+ skill requirements). But difficulty is subjective; each player has a unique definition of what makes a quest Grandmaster, Intermediate, etc (length, combat difficulty, required quests, story relevance, position in a questline or season, rewards, etc). We've since added various methods to sort your quest list, including Timeline (which incorporates these difficulty brackets), Length, Combat Difficulty, etc, allowing you to make an informed decision of what matters most to you in deciding a quest's relative difficulty.
  • Added a Wilderness category to the Starting Area quest sort, and moved these (mini)quests to it:
    • Enter the Abyss
    • Spirit of Summer
    • Summer's End
    • Civil War II
    • Civil War III
  • Removed a double space from quest reward text of choose-a-skill XP lamps that display the lamp's XP in parentheses.
Engine Patch Notes
• Optimised performance on Intel HD 2000/3000 series and ATI 4000 series
  • Fixed app restarting when logging in or minimising the app on Android 12
  • Fix for various AMD issues:
    • Volumetric lighting now works on AMD GPUs with MSAA, which was broken in driver version 22.7.1
    • Client no longer crashes on shutdown on AMD GPUs, which started to occur on driver version 22.7.1
  • Known AMD issues:
    • Anisotropic filtering still causes visual artefacts. Players can fix this by turning it off in graphics options and turning it on via the AMD driver software
    • Various refraction effects are broken when using uncompressed textures with the latest AMD drivers. Switching back to compressed textures will fix the issue
  • Known Issue:
    • ‘Play’ button text is truncated partially on some Android and iOS devices, this will be resolved with Mondays content update. Monday’s update will also add player display name text to the Play button.
  • Various fixes to support Android SDK update
  • Fixed an issue with shadows being incorrect for some models
  • Fixed some terrains not casting shadows
  • Improved point light shadows on high and ultra quality
  • Corrected lighting in several area

QoL Mini Strike & Advent Calendar - This Week In RuneScape

The Ninjas have been adding a little polish to the game ready for the end of the year! Read on for news of the Mini Strike, plus the return of the Advent Calendar, last international shipping dates for Christmas merch and more!

The Ninjas have squeezed in some late-in-the-year Qualify of Life improvements in a stocking filler-sized Mini Strike!

Some of the work has focused on gameplay balancing: they’ve taken adrenaline from Super Guthix restores, tweaked Dragon weapon special attacks, and you can no longer gain effects from the Scripture of Bik without using charge.

There’s a whole host of other tweaks too, from Strykeworms now being available to fight off-task, to God Books having up to 24 hours of charge and updated tooltips.

Visit the Patch Notes further down for the full slate of improvements!

The countdown begins! We’re fast approaching the most magical day of the year, and that of course means the return of the RuneScape Advent Calendar.

Get one free gift, plus an extra Key each day you log in through December. Open your rewards for 15 days and you’ll get the new Portable Snowfall Aura cosmetic override!

Since we’re counting down, you’ll notice that Christmas decorations are up across Gielinor from today, and there’s plenty more to come shortly. Look out tomorrow for news on December’s content drop and more special events to come!
Special Attack Adjustments
Mod Sponge says: 'This is my Game Jam work from back in March, so it'll be great to finally have it in the game and to see what players make of it. Since special attacks were reintroduced to RuneScape, a lot of them have fallen into the category of 'useless', but being such iconic attacks I wanted to give them the love they deserved. By reducing the clunkiness of weapons like the Dragon Claws and addressing their adrenaline efficiency so they match more modern standards, hopefully we'll see more players picking them up (or throwing them in their Amulets)!

With the time limitations of the Game Jam I was only able to rework the Dragon weapons after rewriting the tooltips, but if it’s something players like, I’d be up for doing a second batch!’
