Taxi Life: A City Driving Simulator News

One week later

Hello Drivers,

Here we are. Taxi Life was released a week ago today.

First of all, we'd like to thank you for all your support and feedback to improve the game. Reading your feedback, your kind messages and your encouragement has given us a lot of fuel for this first week. We are glad to read that many of you are enjoying driving in Barcelona!

Now, let's get straight to the point.

We are aware that you're interested in what is going on next in Taxi Life. And in this News, we want to share with you how our first week was for the team, and what’s coming in the future of Taxi Life.

Driving Wheel:

The main feedback we've received is that there aren't enough steering wheels compatible with the game. During the development of Taxi Life we worked with the driving wheels that were available for us. There are a lot of models out there, and it takes a lot of time to make every single driving wheel compatible with the game. It's not an excuse, but this was our situation.

We really want to expand this list, and improve some actual driving wheels. We have a step-by-step plan that we are polishing right now and should let you know in more detail soon how it will look. In parallel we need to fix other issues you're already experiencing in-game.

AI issues:

Recreating the life of a real city was a challenge for us. We think we've succeeded in modeling a part of the city of Barcelona. But our AI is a complex system and there’s a lot of randomization. We tested it as carefully as we could and believed that balance would work. Now we see there’s still work to do.

At the moment, we're working on improving the behavior of the cars. For example we know some cars can run into the back of your car quite randomly. It can happen to you once every five minutes, but it can also never happen to you. Our second piece of AI work focuses on pedestrians. Especially those who use crosswalks too often and can block the player.

More details bellow.

Performance issues & bugs:

Performance issues are also a challenge for us. We're getting feedback that on some high-end PC’s the game runs very badly, and on others that, and I quote, "are several year old potatoes", the game runs very well.

So we're going to work on that. We want to provide a good Taxi Life experience to many players, and we understand that stuttering and frame loss are not fun and can be frustrating.

More content?

To be completely transparent, we've got lots of ideas, and you've shared with us some great ideas for improving the game as well. But for the moment, it's still a bit early to think about what we're going to add to the game. So for now, we encourage the community to keep the ideas and feedback coming and please know that we’re always reading everything.

We'd like to add more cars, expand the map, add more features, cities etc... but we need to stay focused on improving what's already there, rather than ignoring the problems and adding content just to hide the dust under the carpet.

Rest assured, as soon as we’re ready to talk about what's next for Taxi Life, we will communicate it, no doubt.

Oh, and we'll add NPC taxis driving around the city in the next patch upon community's request!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1351240/Taxi_Life_A_City_Driving_Simulator/

Let's stop talking, what's going to happen in the next few weeks?

Our IDEAL plan is to release a patch every one or two weeks or so until Taxi Life reaches a standard that satisfies you, the players. Over the next few days, we will be releasing patches to correct bugs and improve AI. This is our plan for the patches that will be arriving shortly.

At the time of writing, a patch is being tested by our quality assurance (QA) team for validation before going live in a few days.

To give you more details, we decreased the number of random collisions between AI vehicles (or with your car). We've also reduced the amount of pedestrians a little bit and some of the crossings shouldn't be problematic anymore.

For the past week we've been making lists of the most popular steering wheel models to prioritize which ones we're going to add. We'll try to add a little at a time.

Finally, a quick word for our console players; We are still working on the performance issues you have on Playstation 5. We have a solution that is currently being tested by our QA, it should arrive very soon.

Once again, thank you for your support!

No, Taxi Life was designed as a solo game.
How long does the game last?
It depends on your game style but generally, it takes around 30 hours to unlock all cars, monuments and skills. However, there is no actual ending and you can play indefinitely.

You can change the camera by pressing D-pad up on the gampad or C on the keyboard.

GAMEPLAY
Can I customize my character?
When creating a new career, you can choose your main character appearance among 4 choices. Once you've chosen a character, you can't change it afterwards.
Is there any impact if I'm mean to my passengers? Nice?
Depending on you being nice or rude, you get higher or lower tips at the end of the ride. Your behaviour also impacts the XP you get and the patience level of the client, which stops the ride when reaching 0.
Do customer ratings have an impact?
Customer ratings have an impact on your tip, but not on future courses.
What happens if I don't drop off the client on time?
The mission is failed and you don't get money or XP. However, you're not fined for this.
Do I have to have a customer all the time, or can I just drive around town/explore?
You can drive around Barcelona as long as you like without a customer, so feel free to explore all the landing marks!
How can I change my driving style? What driving modes are available?
Four driving modes are available: arcade, semi-arcade, simulation and simulation+clutch.

- Arcade mode: no gears changes and brake is changed to revers gear whenever needed
- Semi-simulation: player has to use gears changes button in scope R-N-D, independently of the type of gear box in the car
- Simulation: the player has to use the gearbox as it works in the car
- Simulation + clutch mode: similar to simulation, but the player has to use clutch
Can I play even if I don't know how to drive in real life? Can I drive even if I don't have a European driving license?
No need for a driving licence to play Taxi Life! At the start, you're introduced to the game through a driving school where all the main controls and car maneuvers are explained. As for the main rules, here are the ones you should keep in mind:
- Keep your speed equal or below each area's speeding limit (50km/h most of the time, 30km/h, 70km/h or 90km/h when indicated by a pannel)
- Signal right or left before turning right or left
- Stop before red lights
- Don't drive against the flow
- Don't drive on the pavement
How do I gain experience in the game?
By driving according to the road rules, finding collectables and taking clients.
Where do I find the challenges?
They are spread out across the map in different places. Look for the trophy icons!

CARS
Where can I buy and customize cars?
You can buy, sell and customize cars in the garage. You can also change their parts and perform their maintenance (refuel, fix and clean).
Are there real car brands?
All the car brands in Taxi Life are fictional.
If the car is too damaged, what should I do?
Repair it by driving to a garage or by using the emergency section of the radial menu and selecting to tow to the garage.
What is the price of gasoline in Taxi Life? Are there any fluctuations?
The price is randomized every day.

CITY
Is the entire city of Barcelona reproduced in the game?
A large part of Barcelona has been reproduced in 1:1 scale, but not the whole city. Also note that you will recognize the streets, buildings layout, monuments, landmarks… but that not all small buildings have been exactly reproduced - for example, you may not find your local shops or restaurants. Some details have also been altered for gameplay purpose, such as gas station locations, and all the street art you see in the game is fictional.
What happens if I do not respect the law?
If you disobey the law and you're caught by a road radar or a spotted by a patrolling police car, you'll immedialy receive a fine. The only exception to this rule is during challenges in which clients ask you to drive as fast as possible, in which case you won't receive a fine for the duration of the mission.
What are the speed limits in the game?
Like in a majority of cities, the speed limit is ususally 50 kmph, but you will also find places where the limitation becomes either 30 kmph, 70 kmph, or 90 kmph.
Can we run over pedestrians?
You can but you won't see the result - once you touch a pedestrian with your car, a black screen appears and you get seriously fined.
Is it normal for cars and pedestrians not to always respect the law?
Just like in real life, other cars and pedestrians might disobey the law from time to time. Watch out if a pedestrian crosses outside crosswalks!
Can we perform drifts?
You can but it's not easy, and definitely not recommended if a police car is around!

MANAGEMENT
Where can I manage my business?
You have to get into a garage and go to the management panel. Once you buy your first car, you'll be able to recruit employees and assign them a car, a shift and a location. There is no limit to the number of employees you can hire.
Does assigning my employee to a neighborhood have an impact? What about assigning them to a specific car?
Yes, assigning an employee to a neighborhood has an impact: different neighborhood have different prices in different hours. Some drivers also have perks and/or drawbacks which change their price depending on the car they drive.
How can I get my employees to have fewer accidents, keep their cars clean, and work harder?
Drivers with specific perks behave and perform better, and drawbacks work opposite. After a few hours or playing, the driver will learn and both their perk and drawback will evolve.
Why aren't my employees bringing in any money for the business?
You need to let the time pass naturally while you're on the streets.

SUPPORT
Where can I get help if I have an issue?
To get help and report any issues you have encountered reach our support here: https://taxi-life.zendesk.com/hc/en-gb
How do I change my key bindings?
You can change your key bindinds in System settings > Controls.
If I'm stuck, what should I do? What if I run out of money?
If you get stuck on the road, you can use the radial menu to go to the emergency section and restore the car to the road. You cannot get bankrupt in the game: if you have less than 0 money, you will not be able to buy new cars and parts, but you will be able to refuel, repair and drive your car.
