Darktide Penances guide

Darktide Penances can be a bit of a mystery at first, as you'll be receiving points from seemingly out of nowhere when you're bashing heads in Tertium. You'll gain a lot of these points if your missions from the Emperor go well, but what are they, and can they be spent on anything?

If you've been successful in clearing out Pox Walkers from the Tertium underground, then you'll no doubt have a small fortune of Penance points at your disposal. There are multiple forms of currency in the co-op game, with gold perhaps being the most useful of all as it enables you to purchase some of the best Darktide weapons in the armoury, but what can you spend your Penance points on?

Darktide classes guide - Ogryn, Psyker, Veteran, and Zealot details

Each of the four Darktide classes has distinctive weapons and several skills that define their play style. Your choice at the beginning is just the start, as with every trust level gained, you get access to new feats and guns to turn your lowly prisoner into a heretic-purging hero.

As for character archetypes in the multiplayer game, the four Darktide classes are the ranged specialist Veteran, the Psyker, who is Warhammer 40,000's equivalent of a magic user, and two classes that excel with melee weapons: the Zealot and the Ogryn. If they all look a bit drab at first, don't worry, as you can earn Darktide cosmetics by increasing your trust levels or completing a bunch of unique challenges, known as Darktide Penances. Join us now as we consult the codex to get the lowdown on these classes.

Best Darktide Ogryn build, weapons, and feats

The best Darktide Ogryn build is more utilitarian than destroyer, but that doesn't mean you can't cave heads in while you're keeping the rest of your squad alive. The Ogryn is as close as you're ever going to get to a living tank; a hulking beast, standing head and shoulders above anyone else in your squad, they wield huge chunks of metal like they're a child's toy, and can withstand an immense amount of punishment.

The Ogryn is such a large target for your enemies that creating a DPS build leaves you extremely vulnerable to ranged fire, especially on harder difficulty levels. Creating sustainability not only helps you stay alive longer, but while you're drawing the ire of the horde in the co-op game, your squad can operate around you and decimate your foes, perhaps even earning some Darktide cosmetics by completing some of the many Penances.

How to get Darktide cosmetics

Getting Darktide cosmetics for all of your characters will take quite some time, as new gear is a sign of accomplishment in the 40K universe. Buying the Darktide Imperial Edition will give you some unique outfits and weapon skin patterns, available from the game's launch, but there are plenty more that you can buy with in-game currency or earn during missions.

Unlike a fair number of Warhammer games where you get to change their look, this one doesn't require you to lovingly paint each one of the Darktide classes until they look just right. Instead, you need to complete achievement-like tasks known in-game as Penances. Not all of them will give you Darktide cosmetics, but the vast majority will provide you with ways to customise your look, portraits, and even trinkets to show off your achievements. You can also buy cosmetic items and weapon skins from the Armoury Exchange. You need to spend Ordo Tokens, which you can earn by completing each of the FPS game's missions. However, the available items in the shop are only there for a limited time before the next set appears.

Darktide Grimoire locations and uses

The Darktide Grimoire locations are collectible items hidden in certain missions, and extracting with them in your inventory can net you some excellent rewards. As we know all too well, you can't take your eye off the hordes in Darktide for a second, lest you be torn limb from limb, but if you're planning on leveling up fast, you're going to want to take a few detours to find the hidden Grimoires.

Anyone familiar with one of the best Warhammer games, Vermintide, may already be familiar with the idea of Grimoires. They were a kleptomaniac's dream in the co-op game; the collectibles were in set locations during each mission, and finishing the level with one in your inventory increased your rarity of loot. However, grimoires in Darktide don't work in the same way and may leave some players scratching their heads.
