The Manor Lords dev has the "ideal" approach to early access, says Hooded Horse: "It's not like, vote on the next feature"

Medieval city builder Manor Lords was Steam's most-wishlisted game prior to release, and has now managed the feat of transmuting that anticipation into broad enthusiasm and very healthy sales. Not too shabby, considering that it's mostly the work of just one person, Grzegorz Styczeń of Slavic Magic, who has hopefully found time to sleep now and then between fielding bug reports and preparing the game's first patches.

Styczeń understandably doesn't have much time for interviews right now - those troublesome archers aren't going to balance themselves - but yesterday I spoke to Tim Bender, CEO of Manor Lords publisher Hooded Horse, about how Styczeń is getting on. The answer, apparently, is: pretty good, because Styczeń has a healthy approach to early access development in keeping players close, without quite handing them the wheel.

Manor Lords publisher says the game's success is 'well beyond what we could have hoped'

Manor Lords is one man's unusual take on the joys of managing a medieval city and, after garnering a whole lot of wishlists, sold over a million copies within a few days of launch. The developer did try to set pre-launch expectations appropriately, warning players this was no Total War competitor, but the game's emergent narratives, relative polish, and the historically accurate NPC name Cuntz has charmed players and left it sitting pretty on around 25,000 'very positive' user reviews...

Manor Lords players have found a possible solution to trading post traffic jams - the medieval drive-thru

Hello. You know Manor Lords, that fun little early access thing that lets you build a nice little medieval village and slowly take over the world by producing more little gamebesons than your tunic-wearing foes? Well, some people have been running into a very, er, non-medieval issue in it. And now there's an equally non-medieval solution doing the rounds.

You see, one of the very useful little things you can build in your perfect recreation of a little Bavarian hamlet is a trading post, which, as you might expect, allows you to import and export goods to other places. Naturally, this means that the families you've assigned to it are constantly going out on and returning from trips to transport goods back and forth.

As some folks who've really decided to go all-in on the commodity trading have been highlighting, if you've got enough traffic coming in and out of your trading post, you can end up with traffic jams - or traffic accidents - as villagers and merchants try to guide their carts in and out of the post.
