Building the JDM world

Ossu,

Join us to find out more about JDM: Rise of the Scorpion creation process. Today, we will uncover some information about the areas and buildings you can find on the JDM open world map in the upcoming free prologue. Our team of talented level designers brings to life the ideas and themes of this unique racing experience.

We invite you to check out our previous devlogs from JDM backstage, like the one about characters and concept art or our visit to Japan.
Creation of the JDM world
Open world map in JDM is created with inspiration from real world locations. We focus on modeling many interesting looking routes that will be fun for you to explore. It’s a bit of a creative assemblage of places we would like to drive around ourselves. The game is a great medium for that! We can present tracks and areas which are thousands of kilometers apart in the real world, next to each other.

While creating assets, we’re thoroughly exploring buildings and locations in Google Street View. Thanks to this kind of program, we can measure real life constructions and use gathered references in modeling.
Map in the prologue
Players who tried out the demo version of JDM: Japanese Drift Master discovered only a small part of the map we’re preparing for the full version. The upcoming free prologue JDM: Rise of the Scorpion uncovers another area that connects with the one we showed before.

As the prologue adds a narrative aspect to the JDM, we needed more buildings that would also become a part of the story. Our level design team worked very hard on new concepts for models, such as heroes’ houses. These kinds of assets are a challenging task, because we strive to visualize characters’ storylines in the models. We added many easter eggs to the open world map, and we can’t wait for you to look for them.
New areas and destination points
In JDM: Rise of the Scorpion players will come back to the visually stunning mountain roads around Haikama Lake. This time, however, the tunnel that connects this area with Kiko Town will be opened, and with that a new area to explore:

Visit the houses of families Hasashi, Ishida, and Kurama. We wanted the buildings to look alive and genuine. That’s why models are made in a way to show the character’s backgrounds and personalities.

Drive to the school and see where our main cast met. This building is a big part of the story, because our heroes are high schoolers, and their storylines connect there.

Explore the road of the magnificent Tengai Forest. This route will take our players back to Haikama Lake through challenging turns and corners. It’s a great place to practice your drift skills with stunning views around you.

JDM: Rise of the Scorpion is a free prologue that will launch this summer. Follow our social media and wishlist the game on Steam to not miss the release date! Also don’t forget about following JDM: Japanese Drift Master page where we will be sharing more interesting news very soon.
