RuneScape: Dragonwilds News

Runescape: Dragonwilds rolls out its farming update next week, and I can't wait to use it as another excuse to not complete the main quests

When I first played Runescape: Dragonwilds during April's launch, it didn't take long for me to immediately disregard all of the quests to spend hours upon hours crafting the perfect house. Don't get me wrong, I made good progress through my to-do list eventually, but I certainly enjoy spending more time than necessary on the game's less central activities. Luckily, the anticipated farming update is set to launch on December 15, which I'm sure is only going to make my quest procrastination worse...

Introducing...Farming!

[p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p]Fellhollow releases on December 15th, and with it comes the newest skill - Farming! [/p][p]This skill is our first to go beyond the previous skill cap - up to Level 65! Others will follow in future updates, but we wanted to give the team a little more room for the skill to... well, grow. While the Skill levels up to 65, it's being handled with the same approach to any of our skills in Early Access - we're listening and ready to continue to refine the skill with your feedback. [/p][p][/p]
Grow Your Own Way
[p]The core gameplay loop of Farming will seem familiar to fans of Old School and RuneScape alike. Seeds have started to appear in the biomes available in Ashenfall: Brynmoor, Ghornfell and now Fellhollow. Collect seeds from enemies' packs, and by gathering produce organically growing in the world. [/p][p]Pick the right plot to grow your crop. Till it to stop weeds growing. Water to reduce disease. Compost to increase yield. Simple enough, right?[/p][p]Build one of three kinds of planters: Ash, Oak or Willow. Where you gathered the seeds from will inform which kind of plot they grow best in - Ash planters are best for seeds found in Brynmoor. Willow planters will best nurture seeds from Fellhollow. This increases their resistance to crop disease, so choose what and where you plant carefully![/p][p][/p]
Water You Doing?
[p]You can collect river water to fill your Watering Can, and then use that on farming plots. You can also take EITHER dirty water from your watering can, or clean water from a buildable Well or Raincatcher Barrel, and store one of these kinds of water in Water Barrel. This will hold a volume of water that you can pull from - whatever you put in first will define what kind of Water Barrel it is, either clean or dirty. You won't be able to mix the contents, so no funny business. Keep them separate![/p][p]Clean water will come from the Raincatcher Barrel collecting rainwater or buildable wells, but you can also use a Skill Spell to water the plants for you! You magical little adventurer, you.[/p][p]Plants can be watered, and grow over the course of several in-game days - specifically, you'll see the change as you wake up, so power nap your way to produce! [/p][p]You can't purify the water you've collected in your watering can - you don't know where that thing has been. That water will be dirty, and need to be stowed into a Water Barrel for dirty water.[/p][p]Water isn't everything when farming - you will need to cure disease (and your choice of Farming Plot will help with that!), by creating a plant cure, by combining animal bones with weeds. More on Weeds later.  [/p][p]You'll also need to treat your crops with compost to increase their yield (that's the number of things you get back when you harvest), including the chance of recovering seeds. Seed recovery chance increases passively as you get better at Farming and level the skill, too![/p][p]Compost is going to very quickly become your best friend in the world of Farming. The Compost Bin is a new processing station that will turn... well, just about anything, into Compost. And by that we mean:[/p]
  • [p]Anything farmable[/p]
  • [p]Any plant or meat[/p]
  • [p]Any fish...[/p]
    • [p]Look, we're getting ahead of ourselves here. Fishing is coming early next year.[/p]
  • [p]Cooked meat[/p]
  • [p]Burned Food[/p]
    • [p]We told you to hold on to it! [/p]
  • [p]Weeds[/p]
[p]All of those can be chucked into the bin to go all nice and nutritious for your crops. Mmm, sounds delicious.[/p][p]We're tinkering with these systems, and listening to player feedback, so if we need to make any adjustments down the line, you can expect more work coming into these systems in 2026![/p][p][/p]
I'm A Fool To Do Your Dirty Work
[p]Of course, a new skill means new items, and new Skill Spells! Up first, we have:[/p][p][/p]
Uproot
[p]Bring forth a storm of magical energy to uproot everything in it's radius - plots, and overworld plants, alike. [/p][p]Upgraded Uproot: Embiggen* the spell, increasing its radius.
*Use of "Embiggen" approved by the Mages Guild. [/p][p][/p]
Humidify
[p]Conjure a raincloud that rolls forwards, watering any plots in its path. [/p][p]Upgraded Humidify: The raincloud will also now cure any plants it comes into contact with. [/p][p]Tools of the trade are a must with the update! The Shovel, Compost Bucket, Watering Can and Secateurs! [/p][p]Upgrading these tools comes from material progression, rather than your skill level: starting with Wood, Bronze and then onto Steel. [/p][p]The Secateurs and Compost Bucket are one-offs, with no current upgrade paths but who knows what the future holds? There's magic in the air in Ashenfall. [/p][p]At level 20, you'll be able to plant and grow trees - and not just in Farming Plots! Plonk down a sapling wherever you fancy! Level up and you'll be able to plant Tree saplings and let them grown, no maintenance needed. [/p][p]Speaking of which, we'll be introducing Oak and Willow saplings to the game for the first time. They're not natively found in the overworld so you'll be able to grow them from seed to full-grown tree! [/p][p]We've also got a selection of new plants coming in with Farming, which you'll be able to find around the overworld. Wheat, Tomatoes, Pumpkins and Watermelons are on the way! We've replaced any spawns of Kwuarm herbs in chests, drop tables, etc. with Seeds, so you can grow them at your own pace, too![/p][p]We've got some great decorations - including a Scarecrow! - coming too, and we're excited to see you make amazing builds with everything coming with the release of Fellhollow on December 15th.[/p][p][/p][p]If you're planning a mega build, why not join the Official RuneScape: Dragonwilds Discord show off your builds there?
