Super Catboy Devlog #4 - 1994: VHS rental stores, hover-technology, and Catboy!

For this week’s Super Catboy Devlog, you get the opportunity for new insights regarding two important topics which might be of interest for you.

[h3]FIRST: The Main Gameplay Pillars of Super Catboy[/h3]
Let’s go all the way back when Super Catboy was still a product of our imagination:
We’ve put our heads together for quite some time, trying to pin down and define what our game should look like. Since we grew up with games and having distinct favorites, it all came down to an homage to all those brilliant retro games we all love. Thus, Super Catboy was shaping up pretty quickly, and we ultimately decided to combine some well-known and beloved genres that we thought were bound to be married but, to our surprise, have never been combined before.



It features elements of classic Jump ’n’ Runs, Run ’n’ Guns and Beat ’em ups.
Also adding variety through refreshing bonus levels like motorbike rides or a crazy mine car getaway – guess you get the reference.
Our goal was always to create a game that is split into individual levels while still featuring a captivating story, charming characters and a vibrant fantasy world that is inspired by 90s cartoon series, games and movies.
The different areas of the game world itself ranges from forests, snow-covered mountains or the bottom of the sea right up to an evil laboratory, a Wild West inspired canyon and a lot more!
All these levels are designed to deliver as much action and variety as possible. They basically feature both massive explosions and exploration aspects - John McClane and Indiana Jones would be proud!

In case you’re a collector type of guy, we got you covered, too!
Because, every level has 4 hidden golden cat parts waiting for you to find them.

The combat in Super Catboy is best described as fluid. The transition from melee attacks to the use of firearms is seemless – and a lot of fun, of course! From Bruce Lee to Rambo in no time!
While the ammo for his gun is limited, Catboy can use his super sharp cat-claws in almost any situation without hesitation or drawbacks, even midair. But, no worries, ammunition can be found almost everywhere.

After all, the level design is supposed to be challenging but not unfair. Just like the classics of the golden days! On top, we also added several boss fights, since these were always the real treats.
Who doesn’t remember that specific moment, triumphing over the big bad boss of a game, back when we were kids? We still do! You’re not only going to face evil sharks, but also giant bulls and moles with killer claws.
Because, why not? :-D


[h3]SECONDLY: Dope Tech in Super Catboy[/h3]
We’re going to take you back in time now – to 1994 to be exact.
That’s the time Super Catboy actually takes place. But, it’s an alternative 1994 where VHS rental shops are still a thing on the one hand, but on the other flying cars and dashing technology are a real thing. And the credit for the much-loved Hover technology goes to...
No, not Doc Brown, or Marty McFly, ...but none other than Weapongirl’s grandpa!
Unfortunately, he totally forgot to file a patent application, and now the technology gets sold all over the world by big business tycoons. Who would’ve thought?
But still, he never stopped and is always striving to make new inventions – this is the thing that satisfies him most. He’s a happy guy nonetheless, living together with his granddaughter in a small house with a workshop.



Nowadays, the Hover technology can be used anywhere. But the most popular use can be found in transport vehicles like cars and trucks.
Motorbikes also benefit a lot from Hover technology.






Due to their low weight, the Hover energy can be used to create impulsive boosts, which cater towards much higher top speeds of limited duration. The same applies to Gadget Grandpa’s newest invention (and yes, that’s his nickname): Dashing Shoes. These allow for super quick directional movements and very long jumps, which makes it the perfect gadget when combined with a cat’s agility.
Nowadays, the dashing technology can be found in several inventions, like hovering platforms and bouncers, both midair and on the ground. As you can see, Gadget Grandpa is already a living legend ¬ not only because of his inventions but his humble and lovable nature.

Super Catboy Devlog #3 - Dr. Ungefug, Evil Super Villain

[h3]“Dr. Ungefug or: How I learned to stop worrying and love world domination”[/h3]



Cunning and as evil as it gets, he wants no less than total world domination. In his megalomania he bred an army of human-like dog soldiers in his laboratory, deploying them all over the world with his airships.
These poor doggos started their life as normal baby pups, but have been genetically altered to walk on two legs and brainwashed to attack everything that gets in their way.



Dr. Ungefug also tried his luck creating submissive versions of several other animal breeds, including moles, bulls, sharks and cats…with varying results. Some of them became mighty monsters, while others turned out to have too much mind on their own, including Catboy.



The young Ungefug attended science school together with his friend Gadget Guy (who, in a shocking, unforeseeable twist, later became known as Gadget Grandpa) but never really had any success.
While Gadget Guy developed one break-through invention after the other, such as the hover-technology, Ungefug failed to create anything useful at all. This negative energy led him to drop out of science school, disappearing into the underground for many years, until he came back from the shadows with an army of evil goons.
His dog soldiers come in many forms and sizes. They carry a wide range of different weapons from knives to rifles to heavy machine guns. Some are equipped with shields to defend themselves.

He even taught others how to reasonably ride a motorbike… well sort of.



A special character and Ungefug’s right hand is Catgirl. She is a creature very much like Catboy, but driven by dark intentions. There is a lot of mystery concerning this character, which might be revealed during the course of the game.

Super Catboy developer Pixelpogo's devlog #2 'Meet the Gang' available!

Super Catboy takes place in a fictional world on an earth like planet that combines 80s and 90s aesthetics with modern sci-fi technology, allowing for things such as hovering vehicles.
The world is inhabited by humans and normal animals, and the existence of the anthropomorphic animals that got created by the evil Dr. Ungefug is yet to be revealed.



Catboy is the titular hero of our game and was also created by Dr. Ungefug.
During an airship crash he becomes conscious in front of his broken breeding chamber and while exploring his surroundings he soon meets the first anthropomorphic dogs that got sent there to investigate the crash site and capture surviving subjects.

Instinctively, Catboy will resist and put up a fight against the dogs, only to be discovered by Weapongirl. Upon noticing him, her first reaction is, of course, shooting in his direction.
But she quickly realizes that Catboy is not like the other hostile anthropomorphic animals, and decides to help him escape. Giving him his first gun, the two take away on her motorbike.



Weapongirl is a weapon-fanatic crazy young lady, who arguably can be a bit hot-headed.

She loves motorbikes, every type of gun, rifle, rocket-launcher or grenade, which makes her feel a bit lonely sometimes, due to other girls of her age having different interests…


Weapongirl lives with her Granddad, whose name is Gadget Grandpa - well not really, but that’s how they call him anyway, because he is a great tinkerer who always has some new inventions to try out. He supports Catboy on his way to save the world and equips him with technology like the dashing shoes.

News channel 6 has caught wind of Dr. Ungefug’s evil plans and they have sent out a team of reporters trying to get some good material of Catboy and his friends fighting for justice whenever they can. They usually arrive at the scene when Catboy fights one of Dr Ungefug’s evil boss creatures.

Sergeant Wilkins is the main hero of the game. Without his brave involvement Catboy would have never been able to manage anything. All credit and honor is due to him. At least that’s what he thinks. He appears occasionally, to see if everything is in accordance with the law.

Claws Out! Super Catboy Has New Demo for Steam Next Fest

If you thought a 16-bit pixel art game about a punk-as-F#@! kitty cat couldn’t be done, think again!

Today, together with developer Pixelgogo, we are ecstatic to reveal an all-new Super Nintendo-inspired trailer for Super Catboy, celebrating the release of a new demo as part of Steam Next Fest.

The outrageously fun claws-out action-platformer is slated for a release this summer and tells the tail of the eponymous Catboy and his spunky sidekick, Weapongirl.

The two unlikely heroes, armed to the teeth, will travel across a variety of treacherous biomes and claw their way through hordes of beastly dog soldiers to take down the nefarious Dr. Ungefug.


Through icy mountains, dense and dangerous forests, and desolate factories, the duo will take on waves of fur-midable enemies in this high-action adventure inspired by the “best in show” platformers of the ‘90s.


Super Catboy melds its retro high-bit pixel art style with modern, fast-paced run-and-gun mechanics to create a truly paw-inspiring gameplay experience. Play the new demo here:
