Top 10 games within games.
Mini Games, also known as subgames or microgames are the short video games found within another video game, this is very meta and might sound familiar as Arcade Paradise, our upcoming retro-arcade adventure, is full of arcade games, each fully realized with its own gameplay, stories, missions and high scores to set! This is not an entirely unique concept, as there are several notable example of games within games such as Gwent from The Witcher 3 and Journey of the Prairie King from Stardew Valley, that are almost as good as the game itself!
While we are still waiting to ‘Play! Profit! And Purchase!’ until we can build our very own Arcade Paradise, we thought we would take a look at some of the very best games that can be found within games up until this point!
10) Club Sega in the Yakuza Series

Set in a fictional Tokyo, The Yakuza Series allows players to venture into a fully functioning arcade inspired by real life arcades found in Japan. Various Sega classics are playable in the Sega themed arcades including Out Run, Space Harrier, and Super Hang-On cabinets. Arcades have been a key part of the Yakuza series since Yakuza 2, originally released in 2006!

9) The Chao Garden in Sonic Adventure 2

The Chao Garden is a nice break from the highspeed fun of Sonic Adventure’s 2. As the name suggests, the garden is home to ‘Chao’ – adorable creatures, which are very similar to virtual pets. These creatures respond to stimuli, have moods, require food, and can be loving or fearful. Players can raise the Chao, enter them in races, and export them to other games such as ‘Chao Adventure’. In Sonic Adventure 2, the role of the Chao was expanded – so they could become ‘Hero Chao’, ‘Dark Chao’ or ‘Neutral Chao’ depending on which ‘hero’ or ‘dark’ characters were nicer to them.

8) Fully Playable NES Cartridges in Animal Crossing

Although unavailable in the latest Animal Crossing games, Animal Forest, Animal Forest+, Animal Crossing, and Animal Forest e+ all featured fully-playable NES games. These games could be won at Tom Nook’s lottery or via promotional items from special memory cards found throughout the Animal Crossing games.

7) Pip-Boy Mini Games in Fallout 4

The Pip-Boy 3000 Mark IV found in Fallout 4 features six holo-tapes of video games (which can only be accessed if the old tapes are found by the Sole Survivor. All of these retro minigames are based on real-life video games published between 1978 and 1985 and match the theme of Fallout 4.

6) Orlog in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Orlog is a dice game found within Assassin’s Creed Valhalla which is popular among the Norse and Anglo-Saxons. The aim of the game is to reduce your opponents ‘health’ to zero, as represented by a set of 15 stones , through various dice rolls and bonus effects. This in-game mini game was so popular it now even has a real-life counterpart which is available to purchase!

5) Forklift Truck Racing in Shenmue

The action-adventure game Shenmue consists of open world 3D environments, brawler battles and quick time events this is combined with role-playing, life simulation and social simulation elements. For its time, Shenmue was unprecedented due to its level of detail, daily schedules and more. When Ryo (the main character of the first game) works at the harbor, each morning begins with a forklift race – in which, depending on his placement in the race, he can earn a forklift Capsule Toy.

4) Journey of the Prairie King in Stardew Valley

Found on the arcade machine in The Stardrop Saloon, the top-down shooter Journey of the Prairie King resembles many other twin-stick shooters in the genre. Beating the game awards players with their very own Prairie King Arcade System, delivered by mail the next day. There are 3 stages to the game, of which the final boss, Fector, is particularly difficult to defeat!

3) Crash Bandicoot in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Naughty Dog developed both the original Crash Bandicoot and Uncharted Series, so when the two had a crossover during Uncharted 4 it was a dream come true for gamers everywhere! There is even a trophy hidden within the minigame if players manage to beat Elena’s high score!

2) Five Finger Fillet in Red Dead Redemption 2

Who needs all of their fingers anyway? Five Finger Fillet is a gambling activity in which players place their hand palm-down on a table with fingers spread apart and use a knife to quickly attempt to strike the space between their fingers back and forth (while attempting to avoid injury). Suffice to say, you should not try this at home.

1) Gwent in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Of course, Gwent which originated in The Witcher 3 had to be top of the list when it comes to the best minigames found within games. Gwent has now gone on to be a free-to-play digital collectible card game within its own right, with its own esports league too. Gwent is a fast paced game which players can spend hours playing within The Witcher 3, it’s highly addictive and fun – which explains why it was release separately as it’s own game.
Fun fact: Doug Cockle, famous for his acting in The Witcher series, plays the role of Ashley’s berating father in Arcade Paradise! Being too busy in the Riviera to see King Wash for himself, you will receive many phone calls from Gerald sharing his wise words of advice and constant reminders to fix the toilet.
