Top 10 games within games.

Mini Games, also known as subgames or microgames are the short video games found within another video game, this is very meta and might sound familiar as Arcade Paradise, our upcoming retro-arcade adventure, is full of arcade games, each fully realized with its own gameplay, stories, missions and high scores to set! This is not an entirely unique concept, as there are several notable example of games within games such as Gwent from The Witcher 3 and Journey of the Prairie King from Stardew Valley, that are almost as good as the game itself!

While we are still waiting to ‘Play! Profit! And Purchase!’ until we can build our very own Arcade Paradise, we thought we would take a look at some of the very best games that can be found within games up until this point!

10) Club Sega in the Yakuza Series

These creatures respond to stimuli, have moods, require food, and can be loving or fearful. Players can raise the Chao, enter them in races, and export them to other games such as ‘Chao Adventure’. In Sonic Adventure 2, the role of the Chao was expanded – so they could become ‘Hero Chao’, ‘Dark Chao’ or ‘Neutral Chao’ depending on which ‘hero’ or ‘dark’ characters were nicer to them.

1) Gwent in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Gwent has now gone on to be a free-to-play digital collectible card game within its own right, with its own esports league too. Gwent is a fast paced game which players can spend hours playing within The Witcher 3, it’s highly addictive and fun – which explains why it was release separately as it’s own game.
Fun fact: Doug Cockle, famous for his acting in The Witcher series, plays the role of Ashley’s berating father in Arcade Paradise! Being too busy in the Riviera to see King Wash for himself, you will receive many phone calls from Gerald sharing his wise words of advice and constant reminders to fix the toilet.

Arcade Paradise - Arcade Game Breakdown 1

Hello arcade owners! Dre here from Nosebleed Interactive to talk about some of the games in Arcade Paradise. For those who tried the demo during the Steam Festival, all of these should be familiar as you would’ve found them the moment you got the key to the back room. If you didn’t try the demo, you’ll hopefully learn a little more ahead of starting your adventure of turning the back room of King Wash into the ultimate arcade!

“All the fun of Air Hockey, less space, less dangerous flying pucks and keeps the multiplayer goodness!”

Video Air Hockey is one of the first games you will play in Arcade Paradise. To a certain extent it was a “test” game for us and is definitely one of the simpler ones we created. We needed a fun game to test local multiplayer, but as it happens loads of people really engaged with it and enjoyed it in the demo.

“Keep the boss happy as you need to stay one step ahead and sort the boxes in this puzzle game! Get promoted, avoid getting fired and please the boss to get a high score.”

Stack Overflow is based very heavily on the old maths puzzle “Tower of Hanoi” which was introduced to Europe sometime in the 1880s. The name, in case you didn’t already know, is a nod to every coder’s best friend, the website stackoverflow.com, an amazing *source* (excuse the bad pun) of useful code snippets and answers to questions that have been asked a million times by a million coders!

“It's the Princess' birthday and Woodgal sets out to deliver her a cake... travel the world map encountering friendly monsters and helpful friends in this exciting fruit matching game for all.”

Woodgal is a recurring character that you will find in many of the arcade games! Woodgal’s Adventure is first and foremost a match 3 game similar to Candy Crush or more directly Zookeeper DX on the Game Boy Advance, the first match 3 game I ever played (a lot when I used to commute to my first games job as a tester). As fans of JRPG games in the office we wanted to pay homage to the genre which is where the Adventure part of the game came in. One of my favourite bits of this is the Mode7 style rendering we used for the world map!

And with that, we come to a close on our first arcade game roundup - some of you may have played these during the demo during the NEXT festival, which ones did you like the most?

Standby for more game deep dives in future, and of course, more dev blogs!
If you're super excited for Arcade Paradise, make sure you've wishlisted the game on Steam! If you've already done that, then tell a friend or two to do the same, and keep an eye on our socials for more good Arcade content all over the internet!

Arcade of the Week - Arcade Club Bury

Each week we want to give back to the arcade community by highlighting an awesome arcade we think you should visit. This week is Arcade Club near Manchester in Bury, the biggest arcade in Europe with 3 floors filled with hundreds of games made up of classic and modern arcades. It’s a sight to behold with something for everyone that even many of those at Nosebleed Interactive and Wired Productions have already been to! Let us know if you’ve also visited!

Can you see the inspiration for the classic cabinets in Arcade Paradise?

We’ll be going into detail about more of the 35 games in Arcade Paradise! What ones have you seen in trailers that you’d like to learn about?

Arcade Paradise Developer Update #1

Hello there retro gaming fans and / or laundromat enthusiasts (we know there's a few of you out there!)
It's been a couple of weeks now since we closed off the doors of King Wash for some renovations after letting you loose in there during the steam NEXT festival - we trust you had a good time and didn't do anything silly like attempt to open an arcade there or anything like that...

It was fascinating watching everyone get to grips with the finer art of linen care, and the feedback received has reinforced some update decisions, and spurred on others!

Don't take our word for it though - here's Dre from Nosebleed with a lovely update for you, the first in a series of regular info drops that will keep your eyes engaged until Arcade Paradise is back in your hands early next year!
Welcome to King Wash
Hello arcade owners! It’s Dre from Nosebleed here and first of all we want to thank everyone who downloaded the Arcade Paradise Demo and provided feedback on your thoughts. We were overwhelmed with the fantastic feedback and how much you guys got stuck into it, whether it be for the nostalgia kick, how pleasantly surprised people found the individual arcade games or even people who got more invested in the laundry side of the game finding it very relaxing to do.

When the demo launched, the build was already 2 months old and has had significant updates since which we’d like to share to alleviate any worries you may have about the game as part of this developer update.
Accessibility Updates
We want to make sure that everyone who plays Arcade Paradise is comfortable so we’ll be introducing accessibility options so you can customize your game. Adjustable field of view has been highly requested and is something we are looking into. The game was designed to have this specific FOV in order to interact with the arcade cabinets and laundry however we now see that some people wanted more freedom with this. Options we have already implemented include adjustable text speed, a reticule to make it easier to point and aim to interact with things, camera sensitivity options and an option to remap keys/controls.
Self Improvement
Beyond this (and some of the more crazy bugs we'll obviously be fixing) there are a few bits of gameplay that I'd like to highlight. We have a whole array of cool player upgrades coming, that will make your life easier and allow you to play the game the way you want. Stuff like a digital safe you can just drop cash into, a gold watch which doesn't have bleepy alerts and even a self help book which teaches you how to manipulate space and time... so you can spend more time playing games!

(Beginner’s guide to Space and Time?!)

(With a Digital Safe, no need to turn any more dials!)
Work Smarter, Not Harder
We have fixed numerous bugs already... and we’re not talking about the ones you find in the arcade cabs! We know some of you like to have a clean shop so now customers will no longer litter in areas that are impossible to reach, the front doors have had a new fitting so throwing your garbage out of King Wash won’t have the door knocking against you and the laundry system is being reworked so there is a cut off point for customers bringing in dirty clothes. That means they won’t be allowed to bring any new baskets late into the night whilst you’re busy playing arcade games so you can make sure there is no outstanding laundry left overnight.

People found a hilarious bug where a third arm might appear. Although the game is set a couple of years before controllers were designed for 3 hands, this has now been fixed! With all the bug fixes, we hope you have a smoother experience running King Wash.

(Not actually in the game as it released about 3 years after when Arcade Paradise is set)

Lastly, adjustments are being made to the world so it is going to be more filled and brimming with life. We’re not quite ready to share this yet but keep an eye out in the coming months when we’re ready to show more so make sure to Wishlist and follow on Steam!
