Sons of the Forest and Frostpunk meet in realistic new survival game

From Sons of the Forest and Rust to Ark and Valheim, there's something alluring about games that capture that sense of surviving against all odds. Few things, it turns out, are quite as threatening as nature itself, and going beyond the ocean depths of Subnautica and following in the frozen footsteps of The Long Dark and Frostpunk comes Winter Survival, an aptly named new Steam game pitting you against the frostbitten wilds.

Winter Survival Development Update #15 – Advanced Mechanics part 1 ⚒️

Hey, survivors! ❄️

Welcome to another Winter Survival’s development update. In our recent announcement I’ve delved deeper into everything bear-related, so if you haven’t read it yet, you can freely do so by clicking this link.

So, what do I have for you today? In today’s devlog we’re gonna dive into more advanced game mechanics – some of those are connected strictly to survival, and some exist to show you the effects of your actions to stay alive, often at any cost. Grab your favorite drink, prepare some snacks, and let’s roll!
Sleeping outside 🛌
Let’s start with the simplest yet most common mechanic – sleeping outside. In most survival games what you’d normally do is to build a basic shelter where you can sleep and save your progress. Then you’d venture deeper into the world in search of the perfect spot on the map where you’d start building your dream base a.k.a. recreating Minas Tirith or something else.

In Winter Survival it’s “just” a little bit different – technically you can sleep outside. However, it can lead to some unexpected consequences. First one being the drop of your body temperature assuming that you didn’t make a fire. Even if you did take care of that, there is another thing – unforeseen wolf encounters, as I like to call it. If you have a torch at hand or even a spear then you might be able to fend them off, but if not… Then let me tell ya – the future doesn’t seem so bright for you.
Cooking outside 🍖
“I’m starving, so I’m just gonna make a campfire and cook some delicious meat that I stole from the unexpected nightly pack of wolves. It won’t take that much time, so soon my stomach is gonna be full, and I’ll be ready for another day” – thought one already dead survivalist.

In other words – I highly advise you to think twice before you’ll make the choice to cook outside as the smell will attract wild animals. If you’re lucky enough you’ll encounter a boar, but what if that’s gonna be a bear? Let me give you some advice – cooking outside is a last resort, and you’ll need to think twice before you make the decision.
Stench 🦨
Just like in real life, doing certain actions will make your character sweat, which will lead to you building up quite a stench. But how is that supposed to be a problem? You might think. Well, the answer is simple – animal noses are far more sensitive than our human ones. Hunting will become a problem as the animals will smell you from a mile away.

As you can see, hunting takes time and proper preparation, so if you want to avoid being spotted before you even notice your prey, washing yourself before will do the trick.
Cargo 📦
Surprise, surprise… It’s a special delivery time. From time to time, a plane will drop a cargo box in a random place on the map. The box will contain some high-value resources, so it’s definitely something worth venturing out for.

However, it won’t be that easy. Not only will the cargo drop in the evening, when there’s gonna be a bunch of wild animals lurking in the shadows, but also you’ll have a limited time to get the resources you want. To find the exact location of a cargo, you’re gonna need to use your walkie-talkie. Think of it as a hot & cold game – the closer you’ll get to the cargo location, the stronger the signal will be from the walkie-talkie.
Stay up-to-date 📰
And this is how this devlog comes to an end. What do you think about some of the advanced mechanics that you will encounter in the game? Did you enjoy today’s devlog? Make sure to let us know in the comments below. However, please do keep in mind that it's still work-in-progress stuff, so some things that you've witnessed here might differ from the final product. Last but not the least, if you don’t want to miss the next devlog or any other news regarding Winter Survival, consider adding the game to your wishlist 🙇

Winter Survival devlog #14 – The Bear 🐻

Hey, survivors!

Welcome to another development update for Winter Survival. As you might already know, Winter Survival is set to launch on February 28th, 2024. For more details, check out our recent announcement here.

In today’s devlog I’m gonna delve into the matter of the dreaded nemesis that will make surviving in the harsh environment even harder – The Bear. I’m gonna cover everything from the initial concept and ideas to its current state and role in the game. Make sure to grab your favorite drink and join me on this journey. Not gonna lie – I’ve gotta hurry up, cause I can already feel his presence around 😱
How did it all begin?
Since the start of this project, we already knew that we wanted to make a game that will be different from other survival games. On the one hand, we still wanted to keep the core elements of the survival genre. On the other hand, we wanted to give you a challenging experience that will constantly put your survival skills to the test.

This is where the bear comes into play, as you will be able to feel his presence most of the time in the wilderness. Additionally, he is an apex predator and even a well crafted spear won’t be enough to deal with him. More on that later on.
How the bear’s changed over the time
If you’ve paid close attention on our social media channels, you might have realized one specific video focusing on our furry friend (note: he is not friendly at all). As I understand that you might still be busy playing all those wonderful games that have been released recently, I thought that it would be nice to share this video once again, but this time here with ya, folks! Not gonna lie – our bear has definitely been through some rough times. What do you think about one who will be hunting not only your body, but mind as well? Make sure to leave your answers in the comments.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
How does the bear actually work?
In this section I’d like to delve into all of the details regarding the bear’s behavior. I will divide it into separate categories as the bear behavior changes depending on which game mode you chose to play. Let’s start with the Story Mode, so sit down folks, and let me tell you a tale.
Story Mode
In the Story Mode the bear will play a significant role as it’ll be constantly following your and your friends’ trail. Your success highly depends on whether you will be able to avoid/sneak past his presence or not.
Endless Mode
In the Endless Mode his role drastically changes. While you’ll be exploring the area for additional supplies and materials, you’ll be able to spot his trail over a certain period of time. After that, you’ll be given a little bit of time to prepare some sort of decoy to get rid of the bear for a while. However, if you happen to fail fulfilling that task, the bear will spawn within a random place in the area that you’re currently settled in and will start patrolling the region.

Now, you’re probably wondering – How do I get rid of the bear then? Well, the answer is simple yet quite challenging – if you want the bear to stop being a pain in the butt, you’ll need to venture to a different region until our furry comrade decides to leave you in peace. You can still prepare a meat pile for him, but you’ll need to figure out how to approach him without being spotted.
Broken shelters
What do you think about going on a trip down the memory lane? As you might remember from one of our devlogs, your shelter will be vulnerable not only to the dynamically changing weather but also to wild animals attacks.

In other words – if you thought that venturing into the wilderness and leaving your shelter unprotected was a good idea, then my friend, you were wrong! Just check out these shelters – next time you leave your door open it’ll be even worse.
Stay up-to-date
Phew…I’ve found myself a nice, cozy spot to hide from the bear for a while, so before he finds me I’d like to bid you farewell. No, but seriously – thank you guys for sticking with me till the end of this development update. Don’t hesitate to leave your feedback in the comments as this is the most valuable information for us. Don’t forget to follow us on social media channels, and if you want to stay up-to-date with any news, consider adding the game to your wishlist. See you on another devlog (at least I hope, ‘cuz this bear won’t give up so easily).
