Hey, survivors! 👋

Not long ago, we announced that Winter Survival: Prologue will be available on February 6th, 2023! There, you’ll have a unique opportunity to experience some of the things that happened before Winter Survival takes place. As you progress through the game, you’ll discover a variety of different shelters that will keep you warm, protect you from animals, and let you rest. In this devlog, we want to dive a little bit deeper into two of them, and share some more details, so you can get a better understading of what you might expect. Without further ado, let's get the party started 🔥



[h2]Woodcutter’s hut 🪓[/h2]



The first shelter that you’ll discover at the very beginning of the game is Woodcutter’s Hut. It might not be the coziest place that you’ve ever visited, but it’ll get the job done, at least for a while. But first things first. As you can see in the screenshot above, there are some holes within the shelter, so to further increase the protection it can give, you’ll have to repair the damages ⚒️



However, that doesn’t solve your problems for a lifetime, because the shelter can suffer from the terrible weather conditions (such as blizzards ❄️) or wild animal attacks (wolves 🐺 or a bear 🐻). Please keep in mind that it's still work-in-progress, so some things that you see here, might change when the game or the prologue will be available.



Apart from the protection thing, the shelter is also a place where you can gather all your resources and craft some more complex items on the workbench. However, we’ll dive into more details regarding crafting in the future devlogs, so stay tuned for that.



[h2]Hunting Hut 🏹[/h2]



The next shelter that you’ll discover along your journey back home will be a Hunting Hut. Here, as the name suggests, you’ll learn a couple of different things regarding food 🍖, such as basic food preservation, how to skin animals so you can use their skin to upgrade your gear, or you’ll learn how to prepare an ointment, so you can ease your pain a little bit.

It’s been a while since we shared some details about Winter Survival. First of all, we’d like to thank you for being patient. We’re thrilled that many of you out there cannot wait to experience our brand-new game. Having said that, we’ve been working hard to further improve the game, and thus, shed some light about it!

As you probably guessed by reading the title of this announcement, Winter Survival: Prologue has a release date, and it’s sooner than you might think. The Prologue will be available for you to try on February 6th, 2023, as a part of the upcoming Steam Next Fest event. We hope that you’re as excited as we’re right now, and we cannot wait to see what your experience with the Prologue is.

What is more, we’re constantly gathering feedback regarding the current stage of the game, so as soon as the Prologue is live, feel free to send it to us so we can prepare the game for the Early Access release even better.

Key features of the Winter Survival: Prologue:

• Story-driven experience – a mix of story-driven, fully narrated content with key survival features for you to discover
  
• A unique sanity system – you’re just a regular person - wild animals and darkness scare you. Push yourself too hard, don’t sleep enough, and bad things will happen… Want to survive, free from insanity? Learn to take better care of yourself. Or maybe you’re looking for a challenge? Let the madness inside then and let it rule your mind. See how far you can go before you break.
  
• Stealth is your best friend – every animal has a range of hearing and sight, so pay attention to stay out of their way. Here, you are the prey, and the best thing you can do is avoid everything that wants to eat you.
  
• Expect the unexpected – The winter will chill you to the bone. So do everything you can to survive on your long and cold journey home. This is nature at its deadliest – the culmination of its forces against you.
  
• The Wilderness – remember that during your journey back home, you will encounter a variety of different animals. Some of them are harmless, but some will do everything to tear you apart.

We decided to expand the content and feature set we want to enter Early Access with and also spend more time on optimizations. Additionally, when we set the current release date, dates on events and sales on Steam were not yet known and releasing Winter Survival along sales, events or very popular game launches would severely impact our game’s visibility.

Both of those factors combined made us reevaluate the release date and decide on postponing. We will announce a new release date within the next weeks.

While we are looking into the next suitable release window, we don’t want to let you hang in the dry entirely. We have have thus decided to release a prologue to the game showing events happening before the actual game and provide a fresh look at the game and all the changes and improvements we have done since the demo.

It was supposed to be a day-long trip. A short break from your boring old life. But things went horribly wrong. You were attacked by a creature much bigger and stronger than you. Separated from your friends. Thrown into a place that wants to kill you every step of the way.



You have no knife, no gun, no weapon strong enough to keep you safe. And even if you did, you wouldn’t know how to use it. You’re just a regular person. If it’s you against a wolf, you will lose every single time.

The only thing you can do is try to defend yourself. It will make you feel powerless and small. But it is the core of your survival. You don’t want to conquer the wilderness around you. You only want to go home.



Here, you are the prey. And the best thing you can do is avoid everything that wants to eat you. Stealth is your best friend. Every animal has a range of hearing and sight, so pay attention to stay out of their way. Step lightly and look for dense bushes or anything that can make you harder to see. Use stones to divert an animal’s attention and clear your path.



If you’re spotted, you’ll have to run. Remember you’re slower than the beast that chases you. With only a couple of meters between you and certain death, every second counts. So memorize your surroundings to avoid getting cornered. Squeeze through the cracks, jump on ledges and use thorn bushes - whatever it takes to keep the animal away.



But what if you end up facing the beast? A fast, hungry wolf, ready to pounce and tear you apart? You can still survive, but only if you managed to craft some protection. Do you have a torch? Or maybe an arm pad? Use it to get rid of the wolf, but only for a while. You know it will always come back…
