The Return of Boss Mode! Plus, Trivia Tricks is now DRM-Free!
Hello Trivia fans!
Welcome to our seventh regular update! This week we were reimplementing the Vs Boss mode, alongside making Trivia Tricks DRM-free!
Firstly, meet The King, our first boss, promoted from humble easter egg to star egghead! It’ll take a real team effort to get a win over him! Unlike our Festive bosses you can customize the categories you want to play when facing him, but he’ll refuse to budge on the royalty-filled History category! If your teamwork is able to dethrone King, you’ll be the rightful heir to his crown. Plus, if you’re the MVP at the end of that game, you’ll unlock a super-cool Headband available in several colours! Can you be the best on your team? Sure-you-can!!
During our decoupling of the Vs Boss Mode from its festive origins we’ve taken the time to ensure new bosses can be added much more quickly going forward. Got a great idea for a boss? Let us know! You may just find them behind a podium in a future update!
Next up, Trivia Tricks is now DRM free! We believe in free (as in freedom) software. We do not want to inconvenience our customers who may be offline for some time, or wish to easily move the game from one PC to another. We set ourselves a goal to ensure that everything that SHOULD be possible without a connection to Steam is, and you can find the fruits of those efforts in the patch notes below! (Psst, did you know Trivia Tricks is Linux compatible through Proton? Nifty!)
To round this update out, we have applied a number of long-standing bug fixes, and thank you for your patience while we address these alongside our feature pushes!

- The King is our first co-op boss!
- The 'Vs Boss' button has returned, and is more clearly labelled as a co-op mode
- The King, and all future bosses, can now have their own podium design
- The King, and all future bosses, can now have their own backdrop on the TV when answers are displayed
- Players can now customize the categories against a boss
- Each boss can have their own custom veto allowance
- Bosses can also force specific categories on, in the case of the King, that’s History!
- The previous achievement for winning a game against the King Easter Egg has been migrated to an achievement for beating the King in co-op mode
- The previous King Easter Egg has been removed
[h3]Trivia Tricks Goes DRM Free[/h3]
- Trivia Tricks is now DRM free, meaning it no longer requires Steam to play!
- Not all functionality will be possible when running Trivia Tricks without Steam, such as online play or Steam Input. In these cases we commit to giving ‘the best experience we can’
- Give a user-friendly error when player attempts to go online without a connection to Steam, explaining how the issue can be resolved
- Although Steam Input will not function when running Trivia Tricks without Steam, XInput controllers (Such as Xbox) will still work out-of-the-box
- When Steam cannot be reached, we now display a placeholder avatar (This may also resolve some crashes!)
- All achievements earned in your save file which hadn't been unlocked on your Steam profile will now automatically unlock on game load (Previously this was only implemented for the achievements that could be tracked through the statistics menu)
[h3]AI Experience Improvements[/h3]
- Lobbies are automatically set to fill with 7 AI
- Lobbies will automatically fill with the number of AI that were present in the previously played game
- Alongside the keyboard/controller input to add AI, we have also added clickable buttons
[h3]Other Experience Improvements[/h3]
- As we have increased our question count in recent updates, we have proportionally increased the number of vetoes players have when customizing their categories from 6 to 7!
- Short/Medium/Long games now are now labelled with how long they typically are to play
- Updated our questions database, fixing many question typos (Thanks to all of you for reporting these!)
[h3]Bugs Squashed[/h3]
- Fixed an issue where Mr. Tricks was calling himself 'Elf Tricks' during Trivia Tuesday
- Fixed an issue where failing to host a game (Such as no internet connection) would cause Trivia Tricks to soft lock
- Fixed an issue where the Chance Round Machine could sometimes be visible when it was not intended to be in Vs Boss Mode
- Fixed an issue where Festive currency was still showing in the character creator, despite being unusable
- Fixed a bug where pressing 'ready' multiple times after accepting an invite would fail to join the game
- Fixed a bug where Mr Tricks was not using the provided animations, provided display image, or properly smiling/frowning for the dialogue for commenting on players' performances when the leaderboard is shown
- Fixed a bug where players would keep their streak if they did not answer a question
- Fixed a bug where empty podiums would sometimes display the name of the previous player that used them
- Fixed a bug where MVPs were not tracked correctly for the host
- Trivia Tricks is setup to not repeat the questions players have already seen. We're afraid that an issue occurred during our migration of questions out of the temporary 'Festive' category into their suitable, permanent categories. This means repeats of questions that you saw in the 'Festive' category may occur a single time. It will not be possible to retroactively correct this data. We're sincerely sorry for this inconvenience, and are already taking steps to ensure this does not happen for any future question migrations!
