The final attack on Tenochtitlan

The final attack on Tenochtitlan was carried by the joint actions on the roadways with the support of brigs, for which the Mexica canoes were no match. Little by little, the Spanish army, empowered by a growing number of allies, enclosed the brave Mexica, who were still capable of causing a lot of damage before their surrender, caused by a combination of superior weaponry by the Spanish and devastating diseases which had been spread.

August 13th of 1521, after a siege that lasted over 2 months, the city was besieged and the last emperor, Cuahutemoc, was captured as he tried to make his escape aboard a canoe.

Cortés’s victory destroyed the Aztec empire, and the Spanish began to consolidate control over what became the colony of New Spain.
