The great market of Tlatelolco

The great market of Tlatelolco was one of the largest commercial exchange centers of ancient Mexico before the European conquest. It was founded alongside the city of Tlatelolco in the year 1337, and for a time it rivaled its neighbor and twin city, Tenochtitlan, until it was conquered by Mexica Tlatoani Axayacatl in the year 1473.

Since then, it became a very important commercial center, where people from the basin of the Valley of Mexico traded intensely, and merchants arrived continuously from all corners of Mesoamerica to exchange their products.

The level of organization and variety of products was such that it astonished the Spanish conquerors.

Hernán Cortés, in one of his letters, wrote about the market:

This city has many public squares where there is continuous trading, buying and selling. There is another square – twice as big the city of Salamanca – even surrounded by portals, where every day there are over sixty thousand souls buying and selling….

Take a look at the concept art by Josue Diaz, a talented artist from our team, of the great market of Tlatelolco which we are recreating in Mictlan, bringing to life this key location for exchanging goods in ancient Mexica civilization.
