Nao (ships)
Did you know that the nao were an evolution of the coca ships that, at the same time, descended from the Viking knarr merchant ships?
The nao were born from the necessity of making new discoveries during the trips made by the European explorers on their routes to Asia, Africa and America.
The caravels, ships used by Christopher Columbus on his voyage to the West Indies, despite being suitable for long-distance maritime voyages, began to fall into disuse due to the demands for bigger cargos and better ways of transportation for the resources, demands which became increasingly more pressing. This situation led to the creation of new and improved boats, making the bow and stern castles wider and higher, as well as providing them with a greater load capacity.
In this WIP you can see three models of the Spanish nao´s, based on paintings of the time as well as contemporary reconstructions.
