Mayan priesthood

The early Maya priesthood consisted of a hierarchy of professional priests serving as intermediaries between the population and the deities. They were men of great culture and wisdom.

The ones at the top of the hierarchy were called Sun priests, they presided over rituals wearing beautiful tunics, covered in animal fur and gold.

On the second level were the Chilan, prophets that went into trance to predict the future.

Another important figure in the Mayan culture were the ah-men, or doctors/physicians.
Ah-men were responsible for keeping a balance in life with nature and the spirits. During Mayan ceremonies, they used the aromatic resin called copal, sacred liquor, porcupine quills and herbs to invoke the four Cardinal points, summoning the heart of the sky, with powerful prayers spoken in the Mayan language.
