Spanish Soldiers
It is a popular myth that the military efforts made by the Conquistadores were led by professional armies financed entirely by the Spanish crown while, actually, the exploration and conquest were carried out by companies that were always private in nature, which had to have the consent of the Crown.
in this concept art we show a few Castilian warriors, who stand out for their clothing and weapons; it is a very basic attire, since they only had the necessary equipment for a hand-to-hand confrontation: a metal breatplate, a leather gown, which at the time were replaced by the padded armor known as Ichcahuipilli, since it was much more comfortable and protected the soldiers from arrows more efficiently.
During our studies, we realized that the morion helmet was not used by the Castilians in their initial expeditions to the Mexican territory, so we proceeded to study other styles of helmet used during the war; we also added the adarga shield, widely used in the Iberian Peninsula due to influence of the Berber people during the Caliphate period, until the Reconquest, and its use is documented in in documents such as the Lienzo de Tlaxcala.
