Mictlan: An Ancient Mythical Tale News

Huehueteotl

Huehueteotl, which means "old god", is the god of fire. A sage lord, the creator of all life, whose knowledge is as old as the world itself.

In Mesoamerican mythology, the fundamental element of fire was thought to be present in the entire universe and wherever there was fire, so too was Huehueteotl.

The god of fire appears in various representations, one of which depicts him as a decrepit old man with a stooped back, carrying an enormous, flaming brazier on his head.

Sahagún describes him as a deity to be feared and loved. Fire can destroy everything, but it also provides light and heat to the people.

We decided to take into account all these elements to create this important character, as you can see from the pictures below.

Sisimite

The sisimite, a bipedal, ape-like creature, resembles a human in the features of its head. It has dark black or brown fur and lives in the most remote mountains. One of its most disturbing and incredible features are its backward-facing feet.

The sisimite is much larger than the average person, it can be a savage creature, ready to tear the human beings apart, feasting on them. It is one of those terrifying creatures you would never want to encounter!

Here is the concept art created by our talented team.

Member of the Nobility

Niltze, Mictlaners!
(Niltze means “hello” in náhuatl, the ancient Mexica language).

As you know, we are constantly creating new characters that will populate the vast open world of Mictlan: An Ancient Mythical Tale. Today we want to show you a member of the nobility.

The high-class society generally lived in the royal palaces, helping in the temples or working as advisors on politics and military matters for the Tlatoani. They also worked as judges and collected taxes, making sure to prevent fights and disputes in markets.

Some members of the nobility also assisted the priests in the calmecac (a school for the sons of Aztec nobility) teaching to children. Others, who were war veterans, helped train the new warriors in the telpochcalli (where Aztec youth were educated, from age 15, to serve their community and for war).

The mexica society was very advanced for its time, that's why we want to portray the cultural features of that society and of the people who lived in ancient Mexico, hoping to bring some aspects of the Mexican culture to a wider audience.

NOTE: All models we present are not the finalized versions, they are still WIP.

It would help us immensely if you decide to sign up to our Kickstarter campaign.
In order to launch the campaign, we need at least 20k people to register to the page. It literally takes a minute to do so, but it would mean the world to us.

Spanish Soldiers

It is a popular myth that the military efforts made by the Conquistadores were led by professional armies financed entirely by the Spanish crown while, actually, the exploration and conquest were carried out by companies that were always private in nature, which had to have the consent of the Crown.

in this concept art we show a few Castilian warriors, who stand out for their clothing and weapons; it is a very basic attire, since they only had the necessary equipment for a hand-to-hand confrontation: a metal breatplate, a leather gown, which at the time were replaced by the padded armor known as Ichcahuipilli, since it was much more comfortable and protected the soldiers from arrows more efficiently.

During our studies, we realized that the morion helmet was not used by the Castilians in their initial expeditions to the Mexican territory, so we proceeded to study other styles of helmet used during the war; we also added the adarga shield, widely used in the Iberian Peninsula due to influence of the Berber people during the Caliphate period, until the Reconquest, and its use is documented in in documents such as the Lienzo de Tlaxcala.

Nahual Kids #2

According to the different traditions of Mesoamerican cultures, it is believed that the first creature to cross over the ashes spread before a newborn baby becomes that child’s nahual, a guardian spirit.

Every newborn has their own personal guardian, depending on their day of birth. A spirit that watches over them and protects them.

Kids can acquire gifts and special powers from their nahual, which can take the form of various animals such as a jaguar, an eagle, a deer, or a snake (among others).

The gifts can be granted but also removed and, if not handled well, they can take hold of the will of a young person in the teenage years. That's why every Nagual kid has to learn to control and master their powers otherwise their entire existence is on the line.

In Mictlan, you will encounter these characters who can become your greatest allies... or your worst nightmare.
