Mictlan: An Ancient Mythical Tale News

Mercenaries

Mercenaries joined the Conquest and raced to capture the wealth of the New World.

They came from Spain in search of adventures, new life opportunities, personal ambition but, most of all, looking for a quick fortune.
Indigenous communities were attacked and enslaved and any treasures they may have had (such as gold, silver or pearls) were taken from them.

Most of these men, with few if any morals and/or education, were responsible for cruel crimes and killings, willing to do anything to get what they wanted.

Mercenaries wore a great variety of clothes: pants, shirts, jackets or simple leather jerkins. They wore no uniform because they didn't identify with any military group.

War Dogs

Dogs have always been men's best friends. Men originally domesticated dogs by adopting cubs into their tribes and feeding them. Since then, not only dogs became their faithful companions, but they also had an important role in wars.

As a matter of fact, dogs in warfare have a very long history starting in ancient times. Those adorable little puppies would be trained to sink their long, sharp teeth into the flesh of the enemies.

The use of war dogs goes back to the time of Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, Britons and Romans. These civilizations all used dogs in battles, often sending them into battle with spiked collars and coats of mail armour. Attila the Hun used giant Molosser dogs (similar to the mastiff) in his military campaigns.

Mastiffs and other large breeds were used by the Spanish conquistadors against native Americans in the 1500s. Indigenous peoples, who were used to small dog breeds of docile nature, suffered greatly, both physically and mentally, from the attacks by these large and aggressive animals during battles.

When they first met the Spanish war dogs, indigenous people even thought that those might be some species of dragon - an impression derived from the fact that Spanish war dogs were armored in chainmail and steel plate, like their masters.

One of the bloodiest punishments used during the Conquest was the aperreamiento: the defenseless victim, because of an act of rebellion or the practice of sodomy, was brutally attacked and killed by a pack of hungry, trained dogs.

The Patron of All
Are you wondering who this mysterious, hooded, spectral-looking man is...?
He is none other than the apostle Santiago, whose apparitions during the time of the conquest, riding a splendid white horse, astonished all of those who were present.

Santiago is identified as the patron saint of the conquest since the Spanish army entrusted their victory to him.

In ancient writings are recorded Santiago's apparitions, depicting him in shining armor, wielding a sword, with a flowing cloak around his shoulders.

The saint has also a great significance among Mexican people and in a great part of Latin America, it is said that he appeared in Mexico, during the conquest, in the following sites:

- Centla, currently Tabasco State in 1519;
- Pedro de Alvarado in Tenochtitlán in 1520;
- To the troops of Nuño de Guzman, during the the Battle of Tetlán, Jalisco, in 1530;
- Querétaro, during the conquest of the Chichimecas.

Long after the conquest, he went from being the apostle of the conquerors to being the apostle of the indigenous, patron saint of rain and harvest.

Amoxoques #2

After our last post about Amoxoques (you can find it here, in case you missed it!) today we're presenting you the remaining ones, ancient creatures designed by our concept team artist, Jorge H Flores.

In the world of our Mictlan, the video game, the Amoxoaque represent the spiritual entities who are in charge of safeguarding and protecting the ancient memories and wisdom of Teotihuacan (the place where the gods were born) through the transmission of divine teachings and the interpretation of dreams.

 • Oxomoco is the astrologist who is in charge of deciphering the language of the stars;
 • Cipactonal is the one who puts colors to the paintings in order to express the soul of the things that are drawn;
 • Tlatetequi holds (and gives) the gift of words and outlines the magic signs in the codices;
 • Xochicauca gives form to dirt and stones by sculpting sacred images.
