Mictlan: An Ancient Mythical Tale News

Owl Man

In the original Nahua, Tlacatecolotl means “Owl Man”; they are dark sorcerers, with the owl as their nagual, a harbinger of death and ill luck.
They made a living from their malicious arts, usually cheating their victims, since they would cast spells on them only to charge exorbitant prices to lift them.
It’s not surprising then, that pre-Columbian authorities would persecute Tlacatecolotl, or even avoid their infamous services whenever possible.
In this WIP we can see the masked face of one of these fearsome necromancers, with his mask alluding to a great horned owl.

Tlacanexquimilli: 3D buidl progress

Today we want to show you the latest WIP of the entity known as Tlacanexquimilli. Its name comes from the combination of the Nahuatl words tlacaneci (which means "without human form") and quimilli (meaning "bundle").
We can see some of the main features of this otherworldly being, like its body having the shape of a mortuary bundle, using its many limbs to crawl on the ground.
Seeing it was a bad omen, that would fill one's heart with fear and, eventually, succumb to either war or sickness; only the bravest could endure looking at the Tlacanexquimilli.

Mictecah: 3D character progress

Here is our work in progress for Mictecah, in 3D!

Not much is known about the history of these beings, but they’ve been represented as protectors of the ancestral underworld.
According to pre-Columbian stories, Mictlan was a place created by the gods, where the souls of all the dead go.
To get there you have to go through nine levels that descend vertically in time and space.

A surprise from the team: Guillermo Alarcón as 3D character

Have you seen the character we have created to celebrate the life of our Creative Director and creator of Mictlan, Guillermo Alarcón, on his 40th birthday?

With his vision of a pre-Hispanic world, he managed to merge art, history and video games, giving us the opportunity to co-create a project with love and passion for Mexico.

On behalf of the entire team that makes up Mictlan, we created this present because we encourage and support your vision.

PS: Special thanks to Isidoro Maximiliano, our 3D director, for organizing the secret character!

Tlahuelpuchis

Our design team has brought you these WIP of the Tlahuelpuchis, whose design is based on Coyolxauhqui.

The Tlahuelpuchis were common women that came into their powers after their first moonblood, although they could only achieve transmutation into an animal through practice.

Tlahuelpuchis (also known as the “shining incense burner”) were considered naguals or witches, since sometimes they were seen as large fireballs. Today, they are associated with vampire women, since they feast on their victims’ blood, usually little children, who are marked by bruises and the bite of their fangs.
